While I never actually played LOTR MMO I did hear about the life time memberships at the time from a friend who was playing. Seems like a great idea.
(If this has thread already been done please don't get your panties in a twist, just be nice or ignore it) I would like to suggest that CCP consider allowing people to buy life time memberships. I mean the game is going no where and people would for sure know that they were going to get their moneys worth down the road. It seems something that would bring in nice capital for CCP and also reward us who are willing to commit to CCP.
I was thinking about how much it should be and LOTR (if I remember correctly what I was told) was around Ç100 but I personally think that its too cheap. Anyways not sure about that game. Eve is something much better and more stable with a large pop and is almost 100% guaranteed to be around for years to come. So I was thinking that you should have to pay some where in the region of 1-2 years. 1 year is around Ç130, would I be willing to spend Ç260 and never have to pay for Eve again.... to be honest its quite a lot when I look on my screen now but tbh I still think I would go ahead with it. I am almost 100% sure I'd be around for that if not longer, much longer.
Anyways, what about you? Any thoughts? --------------------------------------------------

Why would CCP charge that, when they can continue to make more by monthly payments, or yearly at most.

Possibly, depending on the price.
Oh and the LOTRO lifetime membership is $300. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

I'd pay $300 to play EVE forever, but not any other MMO. Once you've played through other MMOs, why would you continue playing them? They aren't open-ended and varied like EVE is. They have limited playability.
But CCP wouldn't do that, because it would be a major loss for them to accept some cash now for nothing later. And unlike other companies, they don't have to sink to that level of desperation to get people to play. Also, unlike other games, "LIFE" here means "indefinitely". Life for most of the other MMOs means "one to three years, followed by five more years with 5% of the playerbase remaining".

that about sums it up. EVE is poised to have the longest legs of any MMO currently out there. CCP would make far more money just sticking to its subscription plans. Lifetime subscriptions for EVE would be like frequent flyer programs for airlines, good cash at first then disastrous years down the road.
As long as CCP doesn't pull a SWG kind of nerf, EVE will be around far longer than LOTRO or any other current MMO. -------------------------------------------- Glory to the State and Tibus Heth.

I've been thinking about it more since I posted the thread. And I would go higher. I was thinking about the average life of a Eve gamer and thinking that it would have to be more like 3 or 4 years for CCP to consider it worth while.
Personally, it would largely depend on how much but I would most certainly be up for it if it was not like Ç500+ I think if it was too much above Ç500 I would not take it. --------------------------------------------------

Because they could take everyone's lifetime subs, and close the game. It's their game, they can do what they want, right? The Ghost-training vote thread |

Edited by: Jacque Custeau on 16/01/2009 18:50:07 I didn't go to the '08 fanfest, but in the '07 fanfest I saw a silent auction on a life time membership for EvE. I bid $500 (iirc) but didn't win. I was always curious what the winning bid was, but such are silent auctions. Maybe someone from CCP could say what it was given its been over a year?
As for why CCP would do it -> Companies that offer limited one time deals tend to do so when they need a large infusion of capital right now instead of steady amounts over longer periods. Its like when TiVO first started. I was one of those early adopters and I went for the life time membership. Now I don't pay monthly fees and every-time my TiVO starts having issues (been twice in 6 years), they send me a new one for free. -------------------

At Eve Fanfest 2007 there was a lifetime membership being auctioned. I took my annual subscription fee and multiplied by 10 - US$1350.00 approximately. I did not win the auction. I was outbid by almost 2x that amount. That's just to give you an idea of how much value some fans thought it had then.
The idea has merit, however CCP would have to price it so high or limit the number sold per year so as to ensure that they (CCP) would be able to grow and prosper.
I want CCP to be around in 10 years. Don't you?

Lifetime memberships is something for new MMO's that overshot their market and were doomed before they were even published.
It's not really an MMO, but:

If they gave me the option I would. I'm not expecting it.
We could have lifetime accounts just to mill out 15 mill SP chars for ISK. It would kill subs and GTCs. |

Last I saw the LOTRO life time sub was $199 ...
If CCP offered it, I'd more than likely take it, but it would depend on the price.

EVE Online already has lifetime subscription. For the average Australian male it would cost AU$15,370.38.
This is assuming people play from birth until 78.5 years of age. Though, the forum does look as if it is filled with toddlers.

There's just no way to calculate a decent fee for a lifetime membership. What if some catastrophic business problem forces CCP to end Eve five years from now, and people had paid a four-digit sum with the expectation of having a decade or more of playtime? Or what if CCP set the price too low and lose profits?
I'm quite comfortable with the one-year discounted subscription, personally.

EVE lifetime membership is around 4500 Euro. Stick those in a bank as a yearly deposit, use the interest to pay for the 12-month subscription. TADA !

I have a lifetime subscription to HG:L
I bought it reasoning that 'one day the game will be good and i can just come back and start playing with out worrying about subscriptions'
I still think it was a good investment. |

Edited by: Hegbard on 16/01/2009 20:25:36 When you read some subscription based company announcing "life time membership", it means they are doomed. Or are trying to get cash to make a new and better product. Or they are preparing to run with the money.
There's absolutely no reason for a company to sit on a pile of cash instead of getting a steady income. Actually, it's a very bad thing because you're losing cash to cover future operational expenses and instead have to pay taxes on sudden profit. If some other games do it, it's because they have liquidity problems, no other reason.
I can see it makes sense to do something like this once or twice as a PR gimmick, but never as a source of income for a company that wants to stay in business. Btw. This is also the same reason why cars rust. |

No, tbh, unless it cost 6 months of subs - which is just ridiculous. Plus, as has been said, I'm really not sure why CCP would want to.
