Yeah, the good thing about this is the coming clearance means a big coming sale. At the very least can get a bunch of movies for a few bucks, etc. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

I'm actually stopping by my local CC to see if the sales have started yet. I need a new DVD burner anyway, and if they have one on sale at a good price, why not grab one?
Maybe I can get a BD burner on the cheap?
I'll report back with news. Tactical Logistics using the last T1 Frigate hull!

I wonder how many people are going to buy up as much as they can at the CC then resell what they got on Ebay at full or nearly full price. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

Never liked Circuit Chitty myself. Good riddance.
Sales will likely go in stages. Minor sales at first then deeper and deeper as all the good stuff goes and only the crap is left.
Problem with buying from them now is if something goes wrong with the purchase you have no one to return it to. Have fun dealing with the manufacturer.

Good luck finding deals, I have a suspicion the creditors will have sold the best stuff at trade prices to retailers who can dispose of it without an OMG 50% OFF CHAPTER 7 SALE which does tend to destroy value.
A silver lining to credit deflation - bang goes restructuring finance. Now companies can go straight from 11 to 7 without spending months as the living dead on the couch talking through their denial with a shrink while their viable competitors become sector overcapacity. |

I always disliked CC. Their prices were always higher than anyone else, and buying **** was always a pain. I went to their store right after Christmas looking for a laptop...holy **** they had clearance items.....going for MORE than Best Buy. That's one of the reason's why they are closing, the economy was just the catalyst. Hadn't visited a CC sense '02....now I remember why I never went back to them.

Afaik they were bought by "TigerDirect.com". I have a friend working there, she told me that few weeks ago.
Seems like a good time to redeem that gift card I got on Christmas tho. |

Pretty sure it was CompUSA that they bought (and I don't think that was a full buyout either, just certain regions).
Unless TigerDirect bought both of em. From the look of the article (and their website) though it doesn't look like it. |

Yeah, I'm pretty sure anything really good will be sold to other chains/stores/cites. We'll be SOL for getting ridiculously good deals from this.
And it's a pity that they're closing, since they sold better stuff than BestBuy. |

I'd thought it was CompUSA that bought out TigerDirect, but I may be wrong. (Their websites & online catalogue are virtually identical) _______
Circuit City announced (several months back) that they were closing about 150 stores. Looks like it wasn't enough to save the whole thing, after all that.
I figured my local CC was one of the 150 being closed, after stopping by there about a week ago. (Just on the crazy notion that they might actually be selling a plain $250 Wii, without having to buy the stupid "bundles" costing a few extra hundred dollars for accessories/games I'll never use... gah!)
The shelves were 2/3 empty. Staff inside the store all used the same intro. "You here to look, or to buy?" I'm guessing they get a sales commision? Dunno.
Kinda weird seeing the whole thing go. When I moved to the US, 20 years ago, they were the place to go.
The local Virgin Superstore is gone, too. Sold everything, including the fixtures. |

They were supposed to be moving into a building that was just put up about 20 minutes from where I live and then filed for bankruptcy. Now, there's just a brand new empty building that no one wants since everyone's scared to spend money nowadays.

Sounds like a good opportunity to kit it out with a bar, couple of disco lights, fog machine and couple thousand watts worth of sound system and open a club. Times like these people tend to want distraction from their worries...big rave club sounds like just the ticket. |

That's interesting. I've spent a lot of time over the past couple of years researching notebook computer purchases, and Circuit City has had the best deals among brick-and-mortars at least 3 out of every 4 occasions when I made a purchase.
Of course, this merely means that I found the best bang for my buck at Circuit City; like Best Buy, CompUSA, etc. they have a "low price guarantee" which means that if you can find the same model advertised somewhere else, they'll beat it by 10% of the difference (or something similar). I found an item advertised for less elsewhere once, and Circuit City duly sold me the same model for that low price less 10% of the difference. Much more often, manufacturers of notebook computers make a bewildering array of models, and a given model is only available at a single retailer (you can get it with 320GB HDD and 2GB RAM at store A, but a similar model at store B has 250GB HDD and 3GB RAM...).
I might add that I did not shop on price alone, but on brand and configuration (for example, I never considered buying an HP notebook or one with less than 2GB RAM). Also, I tended to find better deals online than in any brick-and-mortar; it's just that when it comes to notebook computers, I liked having the physical presence nearby (bought too many notebooks direct from Dell or Toshiba that took over a month to get to me).

still its a lose for the consumer. They were the only competitor to bestbuy, and any competition is good even if it's lopsided.
Now you will see less innovation and expansion in the best buy model as they have less incentive to do so.

lol, told you they suck.
I walked into one this weekend. On sunday just to ask what day they were closing so I could get free shelfs and junk.
I was told march 31st for the redmond one.
When I walked in I noticed a line wraping all the way around the back of the store. It was more people than black friday... But something was wrong... One black friday they had stuff like bioshock for 10$ or 30% of camera. The best sale I found was 20% and it was on DvD movies... everything else was about 10% off...
SO I walked out, totally confused by what I had just seen. |

slip I agree. But for me, I only go to a retail store if its something I need right then and there. Everything else I go online to buy. Would rather wait a few days for the shipping and save on money + not paying taxes is nice. |

i am going to be sad when they take away our tax free purchases. It will take some time, but they will change this for most of your inet purchases. To play devil's advocate, it is fair if that business has a presence in the state your in and you would probably be surprised how the trend of internet buying has hit the pocketbooks of state budgets.
