"One such scam goes like this: On your travels, you notice, say, frosen plant seeds in demand at a station for an unusually large amount of money. You jump into the next system and lo and behold: There you can buy the plant seeds for a rather large amount as well, but still low enough that you will make a handsome profit for your trouble. Wrong. The seller is the same player that posted the demand. As soon as you buy he will cancel the order, leaving you with a cargo full of plant seeds that you will never get a profit on. This is an underhanded technique, but not one we can interfere with. The only answer is to think carefully before you make the transaction. If it looks too good to be true, it just might be. " __
How about reserving the isk needed to pay for the goods when someone creates a buy order?
Sure, they'll usually manage to cancel the deal after you buy _their_ goods, but if you buy somewhere else, for reasonable prices, the scam has backfired :D

you'd have to reserve the isk AND put a delay in on how fast they could cancel the order. without the delay it wont matter if you reserve the isk or not, since they can still just cancel the order before the person returns to the station to sell the items.
and putting a delay on market order is a bad idea IMO.

Hmm.. Never mind about people cancelling buy orders; shouldn't have mentioned that in my first post.
The problems is people creating false buy orders on chars with no money. |

How about letting the buyer/seller know WHO has placed the buy/sell orders, this way you can always check if they're the same person.
Now you can say that this is easily circumventable by using an alt char, but after a while you might get to know who exactly pulls these scams and avoid them.
The only way to circumvent THIS, is to use 2 alt chars to do it, and you'll have to recreate them constantly so people won't recognize them.
But I think it still makes it a bit harder for those trying to pull these scams. Or am I totally missing something here?

just put a delay on cancelling buy orders by 5 hours, then they wont be able to do it.

How about this solution to the scammer problem.
1. The ability to open a window showing the historical average buy/sell market price across a region for an item in the form of a graph. The graph should show at least 30 (60 or 90 is better) days data.
This would allow you to see if you are agreeing to buy/sell above or below the real market value for an item.
Then its up to the player to be sensible, don't buy high, and don't sell low...
2. Also be able to see the character who has opened the buy/sell order. Then in the character info window see when the character was created and how many orders they have cancelled.
Example: You can then decide if you want to buy 1000 units of robotics from a character that either was created today, or has cancelled 100 buy orders in the last 24hours.... would you buy? I think not.

A delay on deleting buy/sell orders would suck badly. Imagine adding a zero too many/little, and not being able to delete your order within X hours..
Making people pay up front when they create a buy order is still the best solution, imo.

"2.Also be able to see the character who has opened the buy/sell order. Then in the character info window see when the character was created and how many orders they have cancelled."
Be handy to also see how many characters a person has had in total. People have alts for legitimate reasons, but if they start abusing and deleting it would push up the number pretty quick. Personally I'd be as wary of someone who has created 20 chars as I would someone with a low sec status.

Hmm, sounds as a very stupid thing, put info on how many sell orders you have cancelled, I have cancelled many in my days and never betrayed anyone anywhere.

Can someone please explain under what circumstances a player needs to place a sell order for "Trade" goods, i.e. not anything that can be manufactured or blueprints ?
If you bought stuff in error I am sure you could find a place to sell it eventually.
Just prevent players from placing sell orders for these types of goods, they can only sell to NPCs.

Xane, a player pirate (ok this was what I had expected when I first heard player pirates) Hits a NPC caravan. The NPC drop 200k of data sheets.
Now they have 200k data sheet ot get rid of, so they place a sell order and hope some trader will buy their ill gotten booty.
As for buy orders I have a standing order in cald space for spiced wine. The pirates drop this often enough. But there are no market for spiced wine outside Gal space. I wait till I have 50 -100 cases built up then run up to caldair space pick up all the spiced wine and take it back to Gal space to sell. Buy for 500isk, sell for 1000 isk.. It's not worth it for the ppl getting the drops to make the 38-50 jumps to sell 1 or 2 cases. With out buy orders from traders then they would get zero (0) from the drops.

theres a point in sell orders on npc goods but theres no point in buy orders for them until CCP puts a use for them, removing the posibility to put buy orders would eliminate the 1isk buy orders that screws the ppl.. if your dumb enough to buy quafe at 5000isk/unit, ur problem, u cant claim it was to sell it at 15000isk/nuit one jump away because theres no player demand possible :)

I think this solution is somewhat simple. either 1. Put a cap on the price you can sell a trade good for. They have no value except to trade. So there is no reason why robotics prices should ever go above a certain level. As all they are for is buy low sell high. Or you can just inform the person buying the product that he is purchasing the product above the average selling price and inform him of what the average selling price is. |

This is pathetic.
How about, instead of whining to the devs to fix your stupidity, you use some common sense and don't fall for a trade run that pays 12 Mil per trip? Goddamn, it's like you carebears want the game to play itself. ----- Of war men will ask its outcome, not its cause. -- Seneca

Be real Rixeh. No one wants the game to be played for them. However since CCP has come out and labeled this as a "SCAM" then they should do something about it. This does not affect me at all as I do not trade but EVE is the only MMORPG I have ever played where cheating and scamming was not punished but the devs. In any other game Scammers are BANNED and quickly. So far CCP has sent the message that scammers and exploiters will be tolerated and IMO this is unacceptable. The game is only out a month and there have been so many exploits that went unpunished that it is not even funny. I for 1 will not continue to play for long unless CCP starts to weed out the scammers and exploiters.

We don't want the game to play itself. Shoot I don't even trade. But most people playing the game hope the developers will maintin some integrity in the game. As it will dwindle the player base if it does not. Also the trade run wouldn't have to make 15 million... shoot I have heard you can get good trade runs where you make 15%... you could make your own trade run that made 20% or 25%...and you don't have to do anything.. I don't believe they intended for con artists as a viable role when they made this game. Yeah it sucks when you get blown up by a pirate but atleast you know who blew you up. If someone scams you on the market tho.. well you have no clue who it is, and you can't do a damn thing about it. I for one would like stupid things like this dealt with because 1. earn your damn money, stop picking on the weak. and 2. it causes people to leave the game. Yeah and i'm sure you are saying, oh good riddence to those stupid people.. Well what will you do when the only thing left is scum? the game will dry up. You have to help prevent people from manipulating new players. and if you are calling me a carebear then wtf do you call the people who prey upon the new players? I mean come on earn your god damn money. you are pathetic... Because I can gurantee you that someone who trades a lot is not that dumb. a new player has no clue how much he is supposed to make on a trade run, how much traded items cost. I like this game because there aren't many rules. But its people like this who make it so rules have to be made. This is supposed to be a PVP game. Not a haven for scum. |

the only version of this I have seen is a crude attempt, 3500 units of low priced seldome found goods going for round 3.5k, 5 jups away being bought for around 5.6k only catch the buy order was for only one item.
Sadly the areas near by didnt have any real sales of the goods so I coldnt snatch the 5.6k :)
