Well, I'm about 4-5 days old in Eve and was podded today. My fault I know for flying around in 0.4 space, and I'm not complaining. I had insurance and an up-to-date clone so only lost the cargo, thankfully most of it was destroyed so the bastich didn't get much.
Part of the game and all, and frankly, was rather exciting. Especially when I actually landed a couple missle hits on the jerkwad. I knew I had no hope of surviving though as I was warp scrambled and in an inferior ship, only a Condor. But was exciting.
Anyways, the point of this is, why do folks pod people like that? I could understand it if he demanded money or tribute or something. You know, general piratical stuff... This guy came out of nowhere, burned my ship, then burned my pod. Never said a word, never demanded anything, just burned me down. Didn't make sense.
Oh well, that's the game. Off to the mines!

Well, I think the reason people pod (the reason I do) is because it's very satisfying to kill someone. If I came across a ship where I had the time, and the ship obviously was expensive I'd give the person 30 or so seconds to pay up or be destroyed. But generally speaking if I see a Frigate or Cruiser I'll have a go at destroying it and try and pod the pilot.
But as you said combat is exciting whether defending or attacking, you'll get better as time goes by and who knows, the next time that happens the outcome may be different.

Simple answer; 'cause they can. Some people have no code which they live by, be it roleplayed in here or out there. When understanding that breed it's not about reason but oppertunity.
How to do away with this breed of man is a whole other essay...

Edited by: Monclair on 28/07/2004 00:47:49 LOL Force someone a toll or pay or some crap.
If only EVE could handle such a thing.
Shame fact is that you can do that reaslistically in the game.. so ppl pop yah and hope you had something good fitted on your ship or in yah cargo.
Real shame :(
Would love to see another interesting layer added to eve. Perhaps, "SHIVA" will fix everything for us. After all we are being told SHIVA will fix all our problems...
PS: Though somekind of Contract that can be signed be setup. And have some kind of massive penilties if either one of the ppl break the contract. Would make things quite interesting. I'll leave the rest up to the brainacks in Iceland to figure out!

The "because he can" answer was the most honest - a lot of the "pvpers" in eve are whats known as "gankers" in other games . The main reason you were podded was that the attacker couldnt find anyone of equal skill to run away from

Probably people trying to get attention, and an easy way to do that here is to pick on easy targets and be able to say "look @ my -9.5 sec!!! im TEH EBIL PIRAT!!!!!".
It was worse when I got podded the first and only time, when low sec sentry guns had a much shorter range so it didn't take much to set up a BS for gate camping.

I think the word you're looking for is "griefer" not "ganker".
Griefer - A player who suffers from social shortcomings in real life so compensates by trying to ruin things for others. i.e. Misery loves company.
Disclaimer: PvPer does not necessarily mean Griefer.

The first time i was podded (and the only time) was in 0.0 space outside a station in Stain. I asked to be podded but the guy wouldn't do it (even though he had happily destroyed my ship). I had to detonate myself.
I roleplay... there is this computer game called "Earth - The First Genesis" where i play a character in the early 21st century. |

Well, what do you expect.. Even the NPCs kill your ship for the tiniest aggressive behaviour, so do you think podding is overstepping the line? It's only the loss of perhaps a few implants, and a clone (or should be).
If Concord would actually make you pay a fine instead of killing your ship and risking your modules to go bye-bye, then perhaps players would imitate this, but as Concord just shoots you down as hard and as fast as they can, why not the players?
You often can though communicate with the person if you want to barter with your ship or pod.
T. -- always look on the bright side of the cloning facility. |

The game is an interesting window onto the human scale. The lack of accountability means that people tend to behave as they really are, not as they pretend to be in civilization.
You have discovered an honest to goodness a*****e. And good lord are there a lot of them.
