Edited by: Barasu on 18/01/2009 23:36:20 I am running on a amd athlon 2000+ with 512 megs of ram and a Geforce 4 high end card. Will this premium "lite" be as crappy for me as light beer is? Or should I go buy a case of BigRock Traditional to deal with teh pain of building a new rig? |

Your graphics card does not support shader model 2.0, but your PC is about seven years old so it was about time for an upgrade anyway |

just go into PC world or what not and ask for a graphic card that has shader pixel 2.0 or 3.0 and what them trying figure it out or ask question to get out of that one.

I don't really want to upgrade as it costs too much. |

Sorry your gf4 only supports sm1 and so will be unable to run the new lite client. Though tbh I'm suprised it can run a classic client with only 512 mb system ram and xp hogging the majority of it.
So yeah upgrade time it is though even the lowliest bargin basement parts will make your old system seem like a C64 in comparison.

Rather than re-hashing this in yet another separate thread and drawing out the same tired discussions between the same exhausted people, I would encourage the discussion to be continued in the appropriate place, linked below, where CCP are actually reading the thread and more information has already been collected in a single place. (Let's let this one die.)
New Dev Blog: I can totally run that on my Amiga
Also, see the following list to see if your card supports Shader Model 2 (needed for Premium Lite in March) and Shader Model 3 (may be required for Premium Lite by the end of 2009): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pixel_shader

Supposedly whilst the lite and premium client will both eventually use sm3 the lite client won't actually be using any of it to do anything performance robbing and the models will be reduced resolution versions of the premium ones. This should actually improve performance over classic as the gpu gets to help out along with the cpu. |

I don't believe they would. Not until SM3 cards are much cheaper. All the player feedback is telling them not too, and they said it was just something they were thinking about for the Dec expansion. To me this means a graphics update of some kind must be coming in dec and they don't want to support two clinet anymore...

I bet it's one of those three, as all three have been a long time in the making.

Yes, that's why we reject the new "uh, uh, look at me, I'm all shiny but have absolutely no original content" games coming out nowdays that would need an upgrade from "grandma's typewriter" at all in the first place. A PC is replaced when it breaks, or when there are cellphones with faster processors and better videocards than it (whichever comes first)... and then, it gets replaced by something that was brand new at least a year ago (if not nearly two years ago), so that now it's cheap, cheap, cheap but still works quite well My benchmark for decent computing needs : "the OS doesn't hang, can play latest encoding type movies without stuttering and can run EVE with at least 15 FPS under normal mission-running load".

I have read the blog but will I be able to run 3 of the new "lite" clients at the same time? That's why I'm using the classic client not because my computer can't do the graphics of the new client.
Also what is so great about the new client, it looks the same to me. (please note I'm not a woman so colors all look alike)

playing games on old hardware, going to be left behind guys ... can i have your stuff when you have to return to playing card games?
seriously, can't upgrade to 3 year old hardware, stop playing games. A base machine upgrade is about $300 if you get barebones. Thats like $25 a month put into a piggy bank. You can't save $25 a month, how are you affording to play this game?

Seriously, you need upgrading :p
If you want to go totally el cheapo, try to get a geforce 6200 agp card ( I assume you have an agp interface ), would cost me 44 Euro in my regular store. And get 512mb more ram, 512MB DDR1 would cost me 21 Euro. Thats 65 Euro total, and you can most likely find it cheaper on the net.

TBH this, (Well said Akita T) My machines run fine for what I want them to run, if they don't I upgrade till they do :)
Except I expect >60FPS in Eve.
My biggest fear with this idea from CCP is that I'm going to have to look at the ****ty looking updated graphics, Spaceships should not look like there covered in KY or waxed to hell and back.

The $60 motherboard and $40 processor with $20 in memory that I bought last year can run 2 premium graphics clients with no problems, 4+ clients with tollerable lag.
Time for an upgrade if your desktop isn't capable of running the new client. |

My machine can run the premium graphics just fine, I don't as it looks like someone made them, then covered all the models in KY. But I'm happy you can run so many accounts.. Just think, Without all that "premium" overhead, You could run 8 accounts with tollerable lag

Nope
I get better performance with the premium client than with the classic client. I run into CPU limitations when running multiple clients and the premium client offloads more to the GPU.
On my other computer that adds a decent (8800 GTS) video card, I can run 9 clients with painful lag (could try running more but the CPU can't handle it), but using the classic client I can't get more than 6: 7th client won't display due to graphics issues.

I think EVE Online always tried to provide us a balance between good content a deep player experience and nice graphics.
To keep this balance, SM 1.x support has to go.
Anyone who can not grasp this is just being stubborn.
However I agree that dumping SM 2.0 is way too early, dropping 2 Shader Models in 1 year is just not very smart.
The way to go forward for CCP is imho :
1. Release a barebone client with the following : - A still image of the station you are in and the ship you are flying on the background. - The complete interface as you have on the normal client. - Only allow logon on this client when previously docked in a station. - You can not exit the station with this client.
2. Create the Premium Lite client ( customizable Premium client ? )and dump SM 1.x
3. Keep support for SM 2.0
4. Only allow SM 3.0 users to Walk in Stations

It does have a lower overhead on the graphics card. (classic being more CPU based then GPU)
Since the main issue with these threads is the higher graphical requirement for the future clients I kinda assumed you would have picked up on that, however since you listed your prices for your PC and forgot to say the cost of your G-card. I should have guessed you didn't.
and for that, I'm deeply sorry.

You don't need the G-card, that is why I didn't specify its price.
The graphics card built into motherboards for the past 5 years have enough graphical power to run the new specs.
If you bought 3 year old technology 4 years ago then it is time for an upgrade.
If you can set aside half of the cost of an Eve subscription for the past year, then you can afford to upgrade your 7 year old computer to bring it up to speed. |
