Try typing "Parlez" in local. That works too, a la Pirates of the Carribean. Honest Guv.

I think some of these tips may be inaccurate. Being a newbie myself and wanting to explore 0.0, I followed your tips and tried to scare people away with smartbombs but it didn't work and they tried to attack me! So I flew away from the sentry guns incase the pirates used them to kill me, and flew to an asteroid belt so the asteroids would scare them away. But it didn't work and they followed me! None of the five miner 1's I had equipped scared them off, so I started insulting their mothers so they'd disengage, but it didn't work and they killed me. What did I do wrong?

Because these are general guidelines, and everybody is different, so what might work on some people wont work on others.

I think this is the best thing I've ever read on the forums!
But seriously...for you noobs, if you are being attacked by a pirate, whatever you do don't shoot back. Just calmly ask him/her what they are doing...this usually makes them see the errors of their ways, and in return they'll provide you with an opportunity to take a beautiful screen shot of some biomass that should look familiar to you. And oh yeah, making fun of their mothers and sexual orientation has also been proven to work, but they have heard it all, so do try to be original!
