Derren Brown did a wonderful little experiment where he made announcements over a shopping centre tannoy, blended in with muzak, announcing all the best offers. Once the shoppers were accustomed to his voice, he stated "put your hand in the air" in the same tone, and three quarters of the shoppers all put their hands in the air, without knowing why.
Interesting to see just how suggestible we are.
