Got both steam and soulstorm but if dowII doesn't have stategic zoom then I'm skipping buying the retail. Yes supreme commander has spoiled me that much on that feature. Every time I try to play one of the dow games it feels like I'm trying to fight with me face stuck in the dirt and changing the lua to increase the zoom level is a nasty ugly hack. Shame as at least the first two expansions are really fun.

Urban myth. Steam goes into offline mode and simply caches all your keystrokes and mouse clicks for later transmission instead of streaming them live. |

From general impressions on the beta forums, about 50/50 like the changes. DoW1 was stellar, providing tons of great gameplay. Spiffy graphics don't make a game. |

Google "ta spring" best rts online. All the user interfaces are customisable and unit balance is as good as it gets, even having 200+ types. Oh, and its free. |

First impression is that is sucks balls,
Almost everything runs at the same speed, and upgrading every damn unit is a pain in the rear.
however after playing it for a few hours, it grows on ya, like a rash.. and makes sence in some ways.. Not sure if i'd pay for it, but i'd download the sucker. |

The "DOW II" name seems to be more pr than substance tbh. Yes, it is a dow game but it is not more of the same, it's a total redesign i.e.e a totally different game, it's using the "II" just to draw attention for the publisher to push it. In any case, this is definatly beta software, it's buggy, glitchy, lack several key components (seriously, who builds voip into their code and doesn't put a ptt key in), the ui despite being nice in principle is either badly placed (and non movable) or too small, depending on your viewpoint.
Theres also the tiny problem of the huge fights, the ones you could skim over or go back and forth for 20 with all the animations you could watch again and again, being missing. It handles, plays, much more like the tabletop game with fewer, less expendable units but cant get that right e.g. heavy weapons teams get 1 heavy weapon but the real kick in the teeth is thq. This is the beta but its also the proofed (rumoured to be done by an alcoholic chimpanzee) version that will retail, thq having officially said they will fix any bugs/balance issues after you buy it. It's being launched while it should still be development as anyone who played for more than 20 min will be able to tell you. Expect soulstorm lvl support, it'll take someone from the community to fix the bugs withrelic cant/wont. It's only matter of time before a ui hack appear too, having to squint at a 1680x1050 screen because the health bar of your using it 2 pixels hig is beyond a joke.
If this was being judged on its own merits, it's design and quality would not touch the level that dow reached. It's less engrossing, over simplified and over far too quickly, units are made of cannon fodder and drop like flies, there's no unit caps so it's in the same place dow was with vehicle spamming (which have been buffed) and racial distinction/abilities have been gimped. Elder cant cloak, vehicles cant jump, ffo it now burst etc.
With the support we got 2/3 years back i would right now be hopeful most things would be tweaked and fixed but after the past 9 months of soulstorm neglection, a second game being released in the same buggy state and them trying to use the dow moniker to sell a completely different game it's hard to be optimistic. Theres also the fact they said repetitively the beta would be a soulstrom exclusive knowing people would buy the game just for that but decided lying was easier and made it delayed instead. ***The EVE servers and their patches*** |

DoW was quite fun but from the sounds of things they've removed everything I liked about it and kept in everything I didn't. Oh well, I'll just go play Supcomm some more.

This. At least the original DoW didn't completely abandon my Age of Empire roots, I hate lack of building and resource management. |

Aye they do, However when stuck in cover a unit of Tac marines can absorb a silly amount of punishment and still lay down some nice fire. If anyone wants a game im Syrin22 on GFW Live (shudders) |
