You can't be sure what someone of a particular culture/origin will think of a behaviour or sentence as it's not your own. It's not even the majority of people either, just a stupid minority who are part of the 'litigation culture' and will "sue yo' ass" for looking at them wrong. We all have to tread on egg-shells because of those damned few. The thing is you can't know who will and won't be offended by what, so the need to be diplomatic and 'polictically correct', bollox tho it might be, has grown from that. I don't believe as the OP suggested that using jewish, mexican, black, chinese, indian, etc, etc can be considered offensive, and anyone who takes offense from those should be considered foolish. They simply describe a person's racial group with no implied insult. The difference is when (no offence intended here) jew becomes yd, black becomes n**r, etc, etc. I think we also simply need be careful with strangers and 'the public'. With friends it's pretty safe. When you know someone, their quirks and sense of humour, etc well enough those barriers don't much matter. My friends make fun of my culture plenty and I laugh at it too, occasionally offering jokes up at my own expense. And I don't hesitate to remind my friend he's going out with an essex girl, laugh at how another pronounces things with their accent, and so on. My g/f is scottish and can readily laugh at her own quirks as I do. But I wouldn't personally consider doing that with a stranger until I felt I knew them well enough that it wouldn't give offense. Tips I've picked up over the years...never ask a scotsman if he's from England, a Candian if they're American or a kiwi if they're from Oz. And it's always open season on the french (joking...I wouldn't be that* un-PC...or would I? ). Check out brilliant comedians like Stephen K Amos and Dara O'Briain, hilarious sketches that show you can laugh at our differences.
