I can actually give some crediblity to both the argument that the universe was created in 6 days and 15-16 billion years at the same time. In a nutshell, when Genesis was written they wrote what they saw in a form they could comprehend, which would've been seeing the universe and everything in it created in 6 days. Now if you were there at the big bang during the conception of the universe, time would run normally for you, you would've seen everything moving as fast as they are now, but to someone outside (someone who would've been writing the book of Genesis 16 billion years into the future for example) it would look like time was moving very very fast, having a huge explosion and creation of the stars, planets and other big stellar bodies (like your mom). As the universe cooled and spread out, time would slow down relative to the outside observer, but to anyone inside the universe it would appear to move along as normal, so that the first "day" of the universe to the author of Genesis would be several billion years to anyone inside.
Cosmic background radiation is pretty uniformly distributed throughout the entire universe, so it makes a very good "clock" to base relative perception of the passing of time on. Between CBR and the shifting of the light emitted from stars (red shift and blue shift, more on that) it's actually how we estimate the age of the universe. This CBR is going through a red shift, which means the frequency of it is getting longer and longer (as opposed to a blue shift that is getting shorter and shorter towards singularity). At one point the frequency would've been very very high, and we use that point to estimate the age of the universe.
So yea, not really a nutshell explanation, but if you take a different approach to a problem it makes a heck of a lot of sense out of the first 6 days as explained in Genesis.
