Assuming close range setups, max'd skills and T2 active tanks I think probably the Maelstrom because an Abaddon cannot sustain its cap. Even more so if the Maelstrom pilot has Crystals.
However plated Abaddon vs active Maelstrom I think the Abaddon would probably win.
Very hard to say without working out setups as Neuts would play a big role either way. --------------------------------- (c) CJ 2009 |

In a 1 vs 1 situation, with both ships fitting specifically for each other?
Mael. It can change damage types, and tank much better than an Abaddon, even more so with crystals and other fun implants.
Out in space somewhere with normal PvP builds, probably the Abaddon, as you may have enough buffer to outlast the Mael's cap boosters. |

as said above, active vs. active abaddon would lose in the end because it consumes cap boosters far more quickly. Passive vs. active is harder to say. Depends a lot on whether abaddon pilot has slaves and whether mael pilot has crystals or blue pill. |

Abaddon wins or warps away.
If Mael has tank it wont have point. If have point Abaddon will chew his tank :)

The buffer fitted Abba will torture the Mael and kill it. The Abba can have a EHP of more than 450000 (Full Slave set) and can do a DPS of 550. I really would pity the Mael pilot facing such a monsterous beast. It will be a slow painful way of losing his Mael.

1 vs 1 Is a close one between these two talking form experience.
Abaddon main problem is cap therefore running more than 1 rep is just not a good thing. I flew a plated fit with a single rep. 2 HS.
I this duel both ships where t2 fitted t1 rigged. The Mael won deep into structure and both ships where out of cap boosters. the mael storm used overheating a a blue pill. the abaddon only overheating (abaddon had the first 4 hg slave fitted though for a extra 4-5k armour)
I say these two and pretty well matched just make sure if you fly the abaddon to overheat your web and stay at that 13-15k range to reduce the damage output of the mael.

Mael wins a sparing match with no ewar. I took on my buddies mael when he didn't have bs V or t2 guns yet but everything else t2 and I couldn't beat him with a dual rep abaddon or buffer abaddon his tank and dps were just to good even at my optimal of 15k. Mael can't fit tackle and still beat an abaddon though and if the abaddon gives up tackle for Td's he should win. |

This, actualy many battles between fully skilled and solid fitted BS(including some Imps) are won by the Player that manges Modules, Overheating, Cap and Range/Transversial better in the end. ---- Nerf Tank - Boost Gank!

How can either of them "win" without tackle? Wouldn't you just run away?

Battleships should be flying with support like in real navies. Actually I wonder if anyone's tried real life navy tactics in game (a destroyer line protecting battleships for example). After all, everyone needs some type of spacer in their sigs to show it's not part of the post.

I've yet to lose to an abaddon in my maelstrom, and that is with web/point fit. Thats with a LG set, with most of the abaddon pilots using HG slaves.

Thats the wrong way to fight a maelstrom in an abaddon. If all you can do to the maelstrom is apply 500dps and wait, you will be slowly picked apart as he will tank you all day. You either need neuts or you need 3x heatsink and overloaded guns, but the gank approach will only work on a sup-par mael pilot.
Geddons normally give me a bit more of a challenge with their ability to combine DPS, HP, and a Neut.

Pilot with falcon alt kills pilot with curse alt, logistics alt, or bs alt. You can't beat the falcon without more falcons.

You need to add some more factors, especially: Do they know the fight is about to happen and have time to harden against the other. What is the initial range? etc.
Off hand the Abaddon has the better starting point so will probably win a random encounter, but could go either way, excellent ships both.

Stranger things have happened, not everyone pays attention to the icons and just assumes they are pointed it's quite funny to. But as I illustrated before in the case of fitting tackle the abaddon wins and some ppl just do friendly fights with corp mates for fun in those case I don't think there is a need to tackle their ship. |

The setup which I suggested for 550 Dps (without overheating), is with 2 Heavy Neuts in High.
Thats why I said the Abba will torture the Mael. With 0 cap and not very high DPS from Abba, the Mael pilot would really feel the pain, as his ship goes down slowly and he can do nothing about it (assuming no help is at hand).

OBVIOUSLY it depends on the setup used, pilot sp, pilot ability, other crap in and near the system...
