What do you think about removing the ability for cruisers and battleships to hold mining lasers, and just allowing frigates and maybe a new kind of "mining ship" to use them? Battleships and cruisers should be used as KILLING tools!
Maybe a tech II indy could be brought out, say a modified iteron/badger etc with 5 high slots that can only mount mining lasers? Increase the CPU requirement for a mining laser to, say, 250, and give the tech 2 indy a cpu reduction bonus on mounting.
This would also mean that anyone mining in one of these 'super indys' would need support from cruisers or frigates, but then they wouldn't need to mess about with jet cans either.
As far as frigates go, some already have a -60% cap usage, so add on the same for cpu reduction and they're sorted!
Flames below plzthx

i've suggested several times that mining hardpoints should be introduced
looking at the new cruiser bonusses for mining, this is not likely to happen ~~~~)\~~~~~\o/~~~~
yeah but no but yeah but no but |

Sure, why not. Then all the people who bought battleships and cruisers for miners will have something that's totally useless to them, they'll sell them for ridiculously low prices and there will be a glut of battleships and cruisers on the market. Then the people who make a living off of selling battleships and cruisers won't be able to sell a thing. THEN the people who mine and sell to the people who make battleships and cruisers won't be able to sell their mins to buy the new ships. The market will crash, people will quit in frustration and the game will die.
On the other hand, sounds like a good idea, let's do it. Stellar Products and Quality Resources ticker: SPQR established 6-03

First of all, let me say that new mining ships are a good idea. The two fundamental steps towards making Mining interesting as a career is to provide unique mining ships with the same balance and preference issues that PvPers get, and making mining as an activity an actual game resembling how PvE or PvP works. It's nice to see that at least the first option is being implemented.
But history tells us its going to be worse then that. A decent miner can replace a few million in an hour or two in empire space with a buddy or two, but time is a lot more expensive.
Most people who mine with cruisers and battleships ignore their Industrial piloting skill. What happens if the new mining ships have a requirement of Industrial Piloting 5? The Monkeysphere |

Maybe give the miners mining damage mods...
Oh god... Apoc with 8 Miner IIs and as many "mining damage mods" as it can fit.
On second thought, let's not do that, I'd rather not see MORE battleships with mining lasers. ------------- My salsa makes all the pretty girls want to dance and take off their underpants. I <3 ( . Y . ) |

I used to think the same exact thing myself, but than it occured to me one day. Just because you bought a battleship doesn't mean that's exactly what you have to do with it.
It's just a hull it's up to the player to put what they want on it, and what role they choose for it.
If I wanted to buy the USS Arizona strip the guns off and throw fishing nets on it, all the power to me :)
Restricting mining hardpoints and the such would be like limiting what weapons you can put on a BS. example: ONLY Lasers on Apocs. or Nothing but Projectiles on Tempest.

That would be rather dificult as the USS Arizona is sitting under water, already has the gun turrets removed, and is in several pieces. Not to mention all the sealife that has encrusted its entombed hull Vice-Admiral
