(Accidentally posted this in the wrong forum, apologies for the duplicate post.)
My wife and I have started playing Eve again (I used to play about 5 years ago, recently started a new account), and we've created our own little corp out in 0.4 space. Just getting our feet wet again, running agent missions, doing mining, looking into manufacturing, etc.
However, being just the two of us in unsafe space, we're under constant threat by pirates who would love nothing more than to grind us into dust.
Are there any options for players such as us who don't play everyday but want to be able to hold our ground without having to retreat to high empire space? Do Alliances offer this (last time I played Eve, alliances didn't exist), or are we too small for them? Are there others like us who would like to group together in some way for protection? What would you all suggest?

Find a local PvP entity and work out an arrangement where they provide security for industrial services. Or move to a quieter part of lowsec (they do exist, try getting out of/avoiding Placid or Lonetrek).

Paying mercs for protection will be expensive so that is out of the question.
Saying it the nicest way possible, nobody cares about you.
Your best bet is to stick to highsec. You can get into a decent drake in a month or two and run lvl 4 missions for good, easy money. There is no need to stick around in lowsec unless you want to die. There really is no benefit to being there.

CVA space, or quiet low-sec (I've found at least 3 such systems with just a little exploration) If you want to make money and not be noticed, STAY OFF THE BEATEN PATH.

- Join a bigger corp, there's safety in numbers. Your choice of having your own little corp, just like all choices, has it's downsides. This is one of them
- Join an active alliance which actually polices their low-sec area, don't think they exist much but it is an option
- move to a more quiet low sec
- don't be a target, and by that I mean have BM's be slippery as hell, be prepared, use scouts
- find the most dominant corp/alliance there and and try to forge an agreement where you provide services (hauling, production below market cost) in return for blue standings.
