Did you have drones out and the rats were firing torps?
Maybe one of the rats was shooting a drone and his torp hit him and splashed your pod... highly unlikely but hey 
It was stated a lot of times that npc's should not podkill and you must be reimbursed |

Patch 1352 to 1378 addresses Bug fixes and improvements
 There was a remaining case where npc missiles would destroy a player's pod immediately after the preceding missiles destroyed the player's ship. Npc missiles should no longer be able to pod players.
Unless they stated -and I missed it- in patchnotes after that one that now the npc CAN podkill you, everyone must get their implants back. (Trust me, GM's used to replace lost implants due to that)
This is a game, ppl should not read hundreds of forum threads to be able to play it  ... to improve their game ok... but for the basics no

I hope you get reimbursed.
At least in this instance they can verify your claim... I'm just a bit bitter about the petition system and want everyone that is honest in his intentions being treated "fairly".
