Edited by: Wayson on 29/01/2009 08:28:29 I'm assuming that most serious resource-extraction operations from wormhole space will be done by multiple players, as corp or alliance efforts. While individual players might be able to eke out something from a W-system, EVE being EVE it will probably be very little, enough to build one T3 ship maybe if that. So, here I am tonight wondering what the W-space gangs of the future will look like. I'll start off by posting what I think their basic composition will be; feel free to post your own thoughts.
Once a good W-system has been found by a large group of people, you can bet that they'll want to sit in it as long as possible to get the most out of it they can. This means that resupply isn't going to be feasible, so we're probably going to be seeing a lot of drone boats out there. Expect Ishkur, Ishtar, and Dominix prices to rise. The other ammo-free weapon system, lasers (T1 crystals) will also probably see use, although it won't be as versatile in terms of damage type as the drone boats. Expect all flavors of laser ships to be more popular. I anticipate mostly T2 cruisers deployed into W-systems, both because of their high performance for low-mass ships and because of their stronger T2 tanks and signature-related damage reduction. Unfortunately, a gang of T2 cruisers alone won't be able to haul home that much. We need something else.
We know that wormholes will allow anything in as long as their mass quota still has room for it. Battleships, cap ships, etc. I realize that a bunch of people have been going off on how people can bring in Rorqs, but... seriously. That's 1.2b kg of mass. I don't see too many wormholes with that kind of mass allowance popping up. So what's the next best thing? The Orca, which is less than 1/4th the mass of a Rorq while still retaining a ship maint array, corp hanger, and large cargo bay.
With a couple of T2 cruisers crammed into its ship maint array, its corp hanger stuffed with extra probes, extra probe launchers, extra drones, and all the other 'extras' that might be needed, and its 'regular' cargo bay waiting to be filled with T3 materials, the Orca is the perfect support ship. Park it at a safe spot, have the pilot turn on the Gang Link mods, and send the gang out to start ratting, salvaging, and wreaking havoc. At the end of the op, the gang scans for an exit wormhole, checks to make sure it's in (reasonably) safe space, and exits.
I do not expect to see a POS deployed. This is both because of the need to fuel it and the fact that the POS will take up space in a cargohold that could have been filled by T3 stuff on the return trip. Mostly though I don't imagine anyone conquering the logistics necessary to fuel a POS located in a system with no static route to it.
Equally, I do not expect any half-arsed gang to be 'stuck' in a W-system. If they are even marginally intelligent, every pilot will have a probe launcher and some probes in his cargo bay, JUST IN CASE everything goes to hell and he needs to get out. Drone ships will be ok with this because of their utility high slots; laser ships will be less pleased.
Thanks for reading this; please post your thoughts on what I've said, or your own ideas of what W-space gangs will look like. ___
