I mostly agree with the first post, I think as it is today, widely opening factory/research slots may really hit the economy, there would be tons of items/blueprints/ships entering the game and Eve today is doesn't look like prepared for it.
But... On the other side, I have to disagree completely on the fact the current system is definitely is a good solution.
The aim of Eve as a commercial product is to get more players, more customers, and continue to expand to have, if the mightiers dreams would become true, 1'000'000 of users online.
But for this to happen, the 1'000'000th customer mush have as much chances to reach the same game features as the 1st who bought an account.
Today, a new player starting from scratch have nearly 0 chances to see a industry slot before joining a corp or becoming really rich, so he can learn the game mecanics, understand what he can do and how it work, etc...
When most of those who started the 1st week or month the game was aivalable, have had plenty of opportunities to see how the game work.
If I was a players looking for a new MMORPG to play, and saw on boards that there's no opporunity anymore for a new player to reach 20% of the features the game offer unless he beg for a production/research slot, I would look others games first before choosing Eve.
Increase production times, 6 hours to build a cruiser is anyway way too fast imho, it should maybe take a week, and a month for a battleship, but everyone must have the same chance to have a slot and do some fun things with it.
I think another problem is the current skill system who let everyone get all the skills (with only investment of time) without having to do any choice except priority, wich will undoubtfully lead to the "GrandMaster Everything Syndrome"(tm)Ultima Online.
Skills would have maybe been a solution to make items production less "handy", would have forced corps or people to look for someone who worked hard to get the skill to build ships who take a lot lot of time to increase, not just a 20k isk "industry" skill and 15 minutes of training time who let you become a engineer capable of building a battleship in some days of work.
Just a precision, I am not whining, I am in a corp who got enough production and research slots for our needs, and myself I have production and research slots in several systems.
