The sad reality is that we should never be able to make our own custom skins for ships because there will always be that group of people who make their ships pink or make stupid designs like a smileyface on their ship. I feel that this would take away from the mood of eve that I am accustomed to. an option that I thought of awhile ago when I first started really ratting was how cool some of the skins on the rats were. I think that it would be cool if we could purchase those or change ours for a fee that varies based on ship cost. I think that almost everyone would agree with me that it would be awsome to get cool skins on ships. there might be the downside that you may not be able to identify ships of the same class from one another but im sure ccp could come up with a cool idea to fix that. please post if you agree or disagree and if you disagree why.

It'd be neat if you could get your corp logo on your ship, since its already generated ingame, but alas, custom skins would be a laggy waste of time tbh. *** Currently Playing: Trolls from Outer Space Current Equipment: VISAcard chain mail, +2 Amulet of Epic Whine, Self Banstick +2 WTB: +666 E-peen killboard stats |

Paying for and using existing skins would be a great idea and a nice new isk sink. As for lag, it would not cause any at all (think about why). |

Yes it would. Just because a skin already exists, does not mean it won't take up extra memory.
Currently, each ship model has a texture (or a group of materials rendered to a single texture, depending on how CCP does things) associated with it. Whenever you warp into an area the textures for whatever ships are within visual range are loaded into memory.
When you have 10 ships in an area (a low number, to be sure), and 5 of them are of the same type, you will have a total of 6 unique textures being loaded into memory. Take that same situation and have each ship with it's own custom skin. You now have 10 unique textures loaded into memory.
The more memory that is being used, the longer the client takes to read said memory to find something it needs. The longer it takes, the more lag you will experience. Now imagine the above scenario in a 25v25 fleet battle with all the ships having their own unique textures. Memory usage will go through the roof, and your system will slow to a crawl.
Essentially, all of those rat textures aren't loaded ALL the time. That would be horribly inefficient. Instead the server tells the client what ships are nearby, the client reads your HD for the texture and model information, and only then are they loaded into memory and ready to be rendered.
While I do like the idea of being able to skin my ship to distinguish it from all the others, I'd much rather have less lag.

At the very least customize the color of the ship. Design would be a bit much right off the bat, what with more important things needed first, but coloring your ship a bit and even a corp logo would just make you unique and be very awesome. |

Good ideea but in big fights like some ppl mentioned the memory usage will be huge , nowdays there are 500 vs 500 fights going on in 0.0 and i realy doubt anyone wants to load 1000 different ship textures
To the identification issues you can set your overview to show shiptipes
It is a good ideea but will cause massive lag , think it will be better if you just see the skin for yourself you know change colors or whatever when you get bored with 1 but other people to see the ship as it is now

Edited by: Erika Bronz on 31/01/2009 17:30:30 Make it an option you can turn on and off. Just like you can choose for other visual effects like explotions, trails and so forth. That way it won't disturb gameplay. |

Edited by: fuxinos on 31/01/2009 18:39:06 Easy way would be, if you could choose from wich Corp you want to have your T2 ship.
Lets say you want a Curse, but you dont want it to be from Khanid. Then you should be able to get the ship repainted from another Corp, thus the skins will vary a lot and people can choose, wich one they like the best.
A nice idea therefor would be, if you have the Curse, you dock in the station and click a "button" for repainting. Then your ship will get repainted to the skin of the stationowners Corp for some Isk. Maybe throw in some factionstanding that is required to use this service.
It would not kill the feeling of Eve, but it would give players a better chance to indentify with their ships.
PLS CCP consider it, it would be such a huge improvment and many people would thank you for it.

i dont think that having these textures will use much more memory because the only way you wouldnt have to load all the skins in a fleet battle would be if there was more then 1 of the same ship and im not even sure on that. unless the skins took more memory then the original ones it shouldnt take up much more memory, if any. this might make it use more memory for having more options to load from making the amount of memory higher. idk, im not cpp.

Edited by: GoldFox88 on 04/02/2009 20:30:13 Well, my idea a while back was just allow the ships main colors to change. Here's what I mean:
Look at the crow, it's red and black. Black being color 1, and red being color 2. Now, the template would still be there, but you would be able to change the colors of them. So, if you want your hello kitty crow, you change the color of template 1 from black, to white, and color of template 2, from red, to PINK (or 'lightish red'... for those that watched RvB).
This can be done for pretty much all ships. This may cause a little lag, I'll be honest, but you can also have the option in the menu to "load custom templates" (also have it automatically load after each jump if you so choose). It's not hard, people. We need to take it one step at a time.
Dun think CCP heard that suggestion, what you think CCP? I'm listening..... |

I would love to be able to make my own skins with a painter, wether its fully customizable (the preference) or if it had a few limited options but the lag point is very valid. I would like a fully customizable paint shop with tons of options for myself, but I also dont like the idea of what some people would do with that so I can see the attraction in a more simplified Dawn of War style.
People have touched on it as an option you can turn on and off but what about taking it a step further.
What about the option to display (completely independant of each other) Your own, corp, alliance(maybe not), all. If there are more groups people fancy then they could be added but I see your own, the corp and all as covering the majority of options.
You would have the option of switching each group on and off on the fly, in a low pop system with a good computer and connection, switch em all on, heading for that fleet battle, switch them all off.
People would get (at least some of) the customization they desire, with the ability to go default when the processing power and bandwith is not available.
I am not sure if this would work though because if we all have the option the server will still need the information from each client, and will still need to transmit it to those who do have the option on.
If we can at least have the option to change what we see on our own ships, I will be happy.
