Can someone please tell me what is most likely happening? Sometimes when I undock (seems to happen to my Cyclone a lot), I already have shield damage. half a second later and I've taken care of it, just really wondering if this means I have a fitting issue? or is this just a glitch?
Not really a problem as much as a self percieved oddity?
Thanks in advance

Edited by: Micia on 31/01/2009 07:42:23 Could be one of two things:
1) Plain visual glitch. Instantly resolved the instant you activate the shield booster, or you take real damage. It might have *looked* like damage, but wasn't. Most common when docking with damaged shields, and undocking soon afterwards.
2) If you were in a gang, you might have received a boost from being in space (in the same solar system) as the designated booster. If you have a good gang booster, you'll get bonuses to agility, locking time, shield, armour & targeting range. None of the effects, aside from the shield bonus, have any visible effect. (Basically, the red "damage" is the extra shield-points you've received.)
3) Eh... someone will likely have more ideas of what it was. |

I believe it's actual damage as in extreme cases it actually takes a cycle or two to remove (Medium 5CL whatever shield booster).
Don't have many friends in game so not the gang option either. Thanks though gives me somewhere to start anyway :) |

I've had it happen a couple of times with the same thing, even just undocking after logging on, It's most likely a bug that they've never got around to fixing, if you file a bug report they should be able to walk you through the steps needed, and who knows it could be included in the next patch.

Red shield damage is not extra points that you received, it means DAMAGE. So you might want to do one thing she said, try not to undock so fast if you docked when you had received a damage. Also it could be that someone is actually hitting you because when you undock you cannot see anyone until you are outside, but your ship is already outside as you undock and everybody can see you and they can lack on you. They might be using a weapon that the bullets are very small so you cannot see them.
I don't know, but the red (being) extra points you have gotten from gang booster is not correct. Any time you see red on your ship, it means DAMAGE regardless of whatever you have. |

No, this is not correct.
If you join a gang (with a squad/wing/fleet command bonus for shields), and if you are in the same solar system, you will see red "damage" when first there.
It is not real damage - it is simply the extra shield bonus that has been added. It is the difference between your own maxiumum shield-points, and the new maxiumum from bonuses. It regenerates by itself, over time. (Any gang bonus to armour does not display in the same way, though.)
You see this shield effect when:
1) Accepting an invite to that gang, while being in space in the same system. 2) Being in the gang already, and undocking from a station in that same system. 3) Being in the gang already, and jumping into the solar system from a neighbouring system.
Quote: Red shield damage is not extra points that you received
If you're joining/in a gang (and they have a booster in the same solar system as yourself)... it sure is extra points. |

^^^ I can confirm that. When you are in space and get the gang bonus to shields it does show up as 'damage' untill you regenerate it. Its not really damage though its your max shields + the bonus. In other words you don't instantly gain the benefit of the bonus. |

Fleet armor bonus keeps %armor constant. Fleet shield bonus keeps current shield HP constant.
That's why when you join a fleet you don't look like you have armor damage but get more armor directly without the need to repair, while you look like you've taken shield damage since the extra shield HP are not there yet and need to boost or wait for natural regen.

this has happended to me as well when I have not been fleeted. IIRC it happens when I'm in a Raven with a X Large C-5L Emergency Shield Overload fitted - but that could be a coincidence and I didn't get the name exactly tight :)

Sometimes it is a visual glitch. I have in the past docked my BS with heavy shield loss and low cap, then undocked, still having the same status, until I hit my shield booster, which then corrected my shield level and cap. -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

I was hauling for an ice mining op in Teonosude in my Badger and showed shield damage every time I undocked after dropping ice at the station.
We had an Orca for mining bonuses. Not sure about other bonuses. |

the orca pilot probably had a few levels of seige warfare which gives a 2% bonus to shield hitpoints per level.
the other case is a glitch that happens with cap/shield sometimes, and remains until something changes the state of the defected attribute. such as activating a shield booster will update your cap level and shield level, kinda funny to watch 10% shields go to 100%, but annoying at the same time.

Happened to me sometimes as well, although not recently and never very much shield damage. I just chalk it up to my crew having had a bit too much of the local brew and "accidently" scraping away some gantry or dock paint. |
