I'm new to Exploration. After building up my skills for some time I went out on the hunt last night and found my first two sites! I was specifically looking for Gravimetric (I am primarily an Industrialist) and found both a Gravimetric and Uknown in the same system. My husband and I mined the Gravimetric all out and then took on the combat site. That was fun!
Now I come to learn that in the upcoming March expansion, Exploration skills are changing?!? I've started to read up on it a bit, but all I've been able to find is Whisper's dev blog on the topic of wormholes. Is there anything equally definitive but more detailed anywhere else on expected changes?
I like what I read regarding the simplification of probe types, but I'm hoping there isn't a corresponding simplification of the technique to the point that it is "dumbed down". I don't enjoy tedium for tedium's sake, and I'm happy to minimise the questionable scan timesinks, but I hope they keep the whole system sufficiently sophisticated that it still requires an investment in both skills and practice. I like being able to distinguish myself by my expertise, and not just by the time spent training skills. I hope the devs will preserve the expertise element and not reduce it to simply having a generic probe and the SP to use it.
More specifically, I'm wondering what will happen to the SP invested in things like Signal Acquisition, whose sole purpose appears to be the reduction of scan times? Not to mention Rank 8. I also hope that they retain the value of my *significant* investment in Astrometric Triangulation and Pinpointing. Being relatively new to EVE I have no experience with this kind of system overhaul, is there precedent for CCP to make useless SPs that have been invested in obsolete skills, do they give SP credit, or have they managed to find ways to apply existing SP to accommodate new systems?
Thanks for the info. I'm going to continue enjoying the existing Exploration model, but I also eagerly await the new content! |

CCP almost never actually makes SP useless or obsolete. Sometimes it takes them a while to find a use for certain skills, but training time is almost never actually wasted. We have so few details about the new probing mechanics right now, speculation is almost pointless. I suggest just relaxing a little bit and waiting for CCP to give us more details about the new systems. As someone who is also invested in exploration, I trust that our SP are probably in good hands |

No details yet but they have said that the skills will still be useful and more exactly the currently most important skills (like Signal Acquisition) will continue to be the most important skills post change (even if the exact thing it effects changes). ---------------------------------------- A Guide to Scan Probing in Revelations |

That's re-assuring to hear and frankly what I expected of CCP. Thanks!

Thanks.
No real news there. Seems they are looking at several different options. The latest hints indicate that they are looking at nerfing normal cloaks (maybe by making them scannable), while covert ops cloaked ships will remain as is.
I would venture a guess and say that they haven't defined the details yet. We will probable see it addressed in the coming scan blog. |

Leaving CovOps cloaks as is and nefing all the others would suit me just fine. Here's hoping. |

If i may put my 2 cents in. I scan alot and depend on it like others depend on ratting for isk. I have read alot on the Dev Blogs and one of the skills they say will play a bigger role is Astrometric Triangulation. A good read is http://myeve.eve-online.com/devblog.asp à mp;bid=616. |

Different dev posts. Digging them up would probably be possible but also a lot of work considering I don't remember which dev made the post. Also considering they have promised scan blog soon(tm) I am not sure I think it's worth the trouble.
Maybe if eve-search had a way to restrict searches to only include dev posts or support wildcards in author names. Sadly I have not found a way to that.
edit: Here is one of the posts btw: http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=740686&page=1#28 |
