Reinforced compartments designed to be shielded by some of the damage, such as the blast of the main reactors going off, whether it's by structural strength or by channeling the damage away otherwise. Also, assuming that the ship isn't completely destroyed but parts of it are still intact after it's dead would mean that the crew has some shelter against battlefield debris and cosmic radiation. However, generally I'd expect things to be rather bleak for the crew in the case of the loss of the craft.
The most likely race to have "life pods" would likely be the Gallente - even with the armour tanking principle, they might have shelters in the superstructure as well as mentioned "escape pods" that are underneath armor plates designed to pop off (or even better, attached to pieces of armour of the craft designed to pop off). The limitation would be that the armor plates covering the escape section would need to have nanobot channels in them to allow the nanomechanical armour repairers work on the armour.
Edit: And yes, on the topic: Most Jove ships were frigates, and with them having pods (and the pilots having backup clones, likely not yet the neural burner tech), and as such, their loss of life would be virtually none. The task of the Jove frigates would be to tie down the Imperial Navy so that their capital(s) could destroy them one by one. The most important thing here would be to keep the Amarr from catching the mothership, as the Amarr fleet would have likely still outgunned it on close combat. (Good to remember that at least according to the old doctrine the Amarr did not quite care about losses - fleeing the battle would be treason, though.) The fleet was basically built for this specific task. It is good to remember that the smallest Amarr ships would be likely cruisers at that time (they developed frigates later, learning from other empires and trying to counter fast Minmatar ships, I believe) and as such (even if we note that tracking wouldn't have existed at the time of the writing of the chronicle) they'd be doing what we do nowadays call a speed tank or even an EW tank. |
