Hi there,
I am sitting in a 3d animation course at my uni atm. And we have to realise a project till end of next week. So I was thinking to modell and animate one of the ships from EVE.
But I dont know which one.
So here I need your help. Help me choose a nice ship.
IMPORTANT For the ship I will choose then, I need screenshots from all 6 sides. So I will need someone who can fly it.
If I get the time I will also include some drones for example.
So let me know your suggestions... |

Edit: Also maybe the Iteron IV from the bottom. That looks like man-meat too. |

Well it will be a full 3D animated version and it maybe goes into a small animation so only bottom is not good.

1. Get Dragon Unpacker or any other similar program 2. Learn how to use it on the EVE resource files to extract ship models and textures 3. Learn how to use said models and texture files in the 3D program of your choice 4. Pick any ship you want 5. ??? 6. PROFIT !

Krarriak, do a Megathron, seriously. You can use some of the screenshots of the model in the EVE store, plus one other thing; check Google SketchUp, they have a Macariel BS on there, and a Drake.
Seriously, check it out.

Ok, your post isn't very clear on this: are you animating the ship itself (moving turrets, folding wings, etc), or are you making an animation involving a ship (so a ship with no moving parts is ok, as long as it flies by the camera and shoots stuff or something)?
If it's the first, forget about EVE. There aren't any ships that have good moving parts, you'd be a lot better off designing your own ship. If you use an EVE ship, you're either going to have something very boring (and I suspect you won't get a very impressive grade if your only animated feature is a spinning radar dish), or you're going to have to spend so much time changing the design to include moving features (for example, the transforming Megathron suggestion) that it'll probably take longer and be a lot harder than designing a ship from scratch.
If it's the second, use the existing game models for your animation. There's no way you're going to produce anything that good in a week or two AND animate it AND render the whole thing, so if you use the existing models you'll leave a lot more time to focus on the important part.
If you absolutely insist on doing your own model, do something Caldari or Minmatar. Amarr and especially Gallente ships have a ton of complex curved surfaces, and working with those is a lot more time-consuming than the much blockier Caldari or Minmatar ships. |

Egh, dunno. I've seen some CG students come up with some pretty awesome concepts, models, base textures and sometimes even shaders in a week or less...
Of course, the key word here is 'some'.
To the OP tho;
Are you allowed to use other people's resources for your project? Are you not supposed to be creating your own resources?
Have you considered looking on turbosquid for some of the free prop/model packs available?
Do you need static models that you will simply move about or do you need animatable skins for your project?
Some of the rogue drone models should be fairly easy to skin, and may work for what you need. Their textures should also not be too difficult to manipulate to look good in whatever program you are using. UVW rewrapping may be a bit of a challenge, but hey, that's what you're studying right? ;P
Good luck tho and I hope we get to see the final product once it's not covered by your NDA. :) |

if he got to animate it might aswell use a moros since it is already animated or if you can find a pilot maybe a nyx since it is the most beautiful ship out there , and you could animate it by putting it into cacoon modeÖ where the wing/blades that form the wingey thing at the front come together
just a idea for you |

well what I have to do is, the create the modell from scratch. So I am not allowed to use extracted modells from the resource files.
For the animation I can choose what I want to do. I was thinking to do kind of a intro movie for EVE. So modell a ship, animate the movement with the engine lights and then create a 3D EVE Logo to use that.
I dont have to animate turrets or so, I can but I dont have to.

Honestly? You're screwed. You've spent almost a full day on the decision process with this thread, and you still don't have a final idea. As a hint: pick something very simple. You have under two weeks to finish this project, and some of that time is going to be spent running your test + final renders (unless you have access to a render farm). Add in time for setting up the animation, and you have very little time for modeling/texturing.
As I said in my previous post, Caldari or Minmatar are probably your best bet, as the lack of complex curves will save you a lot of cleanup work, especially if you plan to add much detail to the model. But I'm not sure an EVE ship is even a good idea, a good starship model can take a long time to properly detail.
But whatever you do, pick it NOW. You're much better off getting started right now on something that isn't quite the perfect choice than sitting around trying to make up your mind.
Quote: For the animation I can choose what I want to do. I was thinking to do kind of a intro movie for EVE. So modell a ship, animate the movement with the engine lights and then create a 3D EVE Logo to use that.
This is probably a bad idea. Remember, the point here is to show off your animation talents, a simple flyby doesn't do this very well. That's what, two keyframes, maybe a path curve if you're feeling really fancy? On the other hand, animating a complex EVE scene will probably take a lot more time (and a lot more models) than you have for this project.
Your best option is probably to scrap the whole EVE idea and pick something else (maybe real-world objects?). Your goal should be something that shows off a decent variety of animation techniques, as many as you're comfortable with (and able to do, in the time allowed). Focus on getting the animation to look right, not on making a really awesome model. |

Well, you have two possibilities:
1: Get your "blueprints" from the game - so taking screenshots for left|top|front and use those.
pro: as textures and lightning is applied, you may see more details and you can still have eve open while modeling and rotate/zoom the model to the specific area you're working on
con: The eve camera has some distortions - so don't expect a perfect plane blueprint
2: Use tools like Tri Exporter to grab models and textures from eve - load those in your 3D package to make your reference images.
pro: you get the basic form very clear and accurate
con: Without textures the models are quite plain so you'll have to take a lot of the finer details from the mapping. And you'll have to stand to urge to just use the ready-built model :)
So - go for a ship you can fly, a ship that you like to fly that will help as you can always get back to eve and check it out - and you can undock and shoot something if you need a break from modeling |

The nice little trick here is you can actually use the model itself as a reference. Essentially, you build your model on top of it (IOW, make a box, move/cut/extrude/etc so it fits perfectly into the matching part on the EVE model, etc), if you care enough, you can even line up every single vertex perfectly.
Quote: -> hehe, Merins post really shows that I'm more the modeling type - I'd rather do a overly complex model and get lost in tiny details than to animate ;) If your task is to show animation, I totally agree with Merin - skip the eve Idea, take some simple object and start animating it - and don't waste and more time on decisions and modeling.
Well, there's nothing wrong with making a really complex model, I like to do it myself. I'm sure you could have lots of fun making a million-polygon photo-realistic Rifter model and animating it, but he's on a pretty tight deadline here. -----------

Hey,
You could do a Badger Mark II
Before I started working for CCP I really wanted to make it explode in a very graphic way just imagine the front piece braking off and the cargo area ripping apart...mmmmmmm
If this is one of your first models then I suggest you pick something Caldari. It's not as "curvy" as the others so it might be easier
Good luck ;)

here is some inspiration
and here is the ship you want to go for.
get on the test server and train amarr frigate to lvl I or II (will take you like 20 minutes) and you will be able to fly it.
or just make an amarr alt, and he will be able to fly this ship right away. |

Well first of all, thanks for all the reply.
I know what I am gonna do now. And it is something different than I thought in the beginning.
What it will be I will tell in a second, but first I wanted to say that I was also thinking about the Hel Modell. So please send me some screenshots from all sides in high quality so I can do it at home in my free time.
So but now what I will do for my course.
I talked with my profs and they also had some ideas, so I got onto a new idea which I think is much more interesting for now.
First I created the EVE Online Logo myself. With all the shades and figures in there I am designing my own special spaceship. This will be used to transform back into the EVE Online Logo.
With this I will try to make a small selfmade 3D teaser for the T3 stuff coming out soon. I hope you like the new idea and for sure I will show it here, when it is done. But for now I have to go onto it, as there is enough to do for the little time left :D
So stay tuned for more.

That ship always reminds me of those robots in Star Wars that roll in and have a shield around them. I remember the hangar scene where Anakin fires the ships guns at the droids.
A neat animation would show an oversized pod warping in and then slowly uncurling into an Anathema

Well it has been a few days. A lot changed and I have my presentation in a few hours.
So jsut up front. I had about 5 working days, for design, animation and rendering. Which is not a lot of time, so please do not expect a kind of Pixar animated movie.
And also do not forget it is my first 3D animation. I did my best in the time I had.
Results will be posted sometime around this weekend. ... |
