As the 'official' (?) Exploration channel is so awful, I'd like to encourage people to join Eploration Help instead.
Hopefully we can exchange advice which runs to more than 'read the guide'.

I'm not that fussed people being asked to read the guide if their questions are basic, but the attitude of the moderator and his sidekicks suck :
- Being told 'read the guide when the answer isn't in the guide. - People getting flamed for not reading the guide when they weren't even asking a question but trying to help someone else. - The moderator and his sidekick are free to discuss any subject but no one else is allowed to. - Getting banned for diasgreeing with anything the moderator says. - MOTD links leading to goonswarm killboards instead of the fabled guide.
I've no idea how people get moderator rights for a channel, but if ccp are involved they really should revisit this channel.

Agree 100% with Harkey's summary.
It's not just about reading the guide. Even seasoned explorers who know a lot about the subject get treated like **** regularly by power tripping guys like AA and a few others. It's a superiority complex combined with a high horse mentality that goes on there. Having to "mind your words" or get banned is just stupid. Sad really, that a few mess it up for the majority.
I welcome the Discovery channel and will be part of it. I encourage people to visit it for exploration related discussion and questions, especially with the upcoming new space.

Waypost questions are the reason I track the Exploration channel. There should be a trap door sound effect when people get booted from the channel. Maybe piranha sounds, too.
When you join Exploration channel there is a warning how it gives away your ship location, you agree to sell your soul, etc. Is this for all player-run channels or are we being used in some nefarious manner?
In defense of the Exploration moderator, he does keep the channel free of spam. I'm sure he has done a good thing there. However, this Discovery channel is a great idea. There is probably a niche for both channels.

Simply put, this is the pitfall of certain trade related channels - mining channels are notorious for this.
People chat about (insert mostly defenseless profession) in a public channel, some guy is just sitting there with his locator agent, looking for easy pickings nearby. _______________ <Q> QUANT Hegemony Item Database

I have used exploration channel and it worked fine, I didn't ask stupid questions. I would first think about my question, then check the web sites then ask nicely in channel and I would get help.
I have used the Discovery channel but no one answered so I can't tell you how helpful it is.
And in the end you should try joining an alliance and run them with other people.

Sigh, responding to a troll post... You can get help in the exploration channel. You just have to be intelligent about how you ask your question. We get between 20-30 "Whatz a waypost?!?" questions a day. Its extremely irritating. Genuine questions do generally get answered. Questions such as "Whats the best ship" "Whats the best probe" etc generally tend to get flamed for good reason. Its called Exploration, not "Tell me what happens before I get there." We have all written many guides explaining in good detail how the system works, and what to expect. There are even resources out there with exact details on the specifics of each site.
If you cannot help yourself, we cannot help you.
The information exists out there, learn how to find it before annoying those who can help you further. |

I tried asking questions in Exploration after being gone from game for a year.
Was quite humorus how everytime someone answered a question it was followed by a warning from random person not to help people cause that was against the rules.
So I would agree, exploration is not the channel to use if you wanna learn more about exploration. Will try Discovery I guess |

Edited by: Wreck X on 10/02/2009 04:56:34 I have felt the cold heel of the "ban boot" there before. I told a moderator he needs to learn some manners or something along those lines since he was being disrespectful. My time in channel that day was very short.
Here's my point though, WHY have an exploration channel for help in exploration if questions aren't answered? I rarely see questions in there that can't be answered by the guide. It's usually just the mods discussing and trying to account for the time lapses in the Star Wars series or some dribble like that.
So... just.... why have it? Oh, and I haven't been to Discovery yet but I hear it is much more effective. |

Truthfully, i have gotten some info from the channel, even help at times. And as the moderator so fondly says "its not a help channel. its a private channel" so they have the right to be jerks to people needing help i guess.
The problem i see with that channel is that apart from not beeing that helpful or nice in general, they seem to spend their time in the channel telling everyone else how good they are, in short its a epeen enchaning channel for those in it. When ever i happen to look at the channel and the moderator decides to make an appearance its either to threaten someone with a ban or to brag over himself. Thats kinda why i never look anymore.
Discovery here i come.

Just be glad that Bozos like the people running the exploration channel sequester themselves like they do. Getting booted from that channel is a good thing.. sort of like having a Jita scammer block himself for you. They are good for humor value though.. fun to take an alt in every so often and see how quick you can get the kid with the napoleon complex to lose his cool.

This is a tuff nut to crack. While I don't like the way the channel is run, I do understand how you could get burned out answering the same questions over and over that are easily answered by even a quick glance at the guides. Seems to me the spirit of exploration has its roots in solving a mystery. I read every guide I could find before I even knew there was a forum here, then I read the ones in the sticky.
That being said- I watch Exploration and see who is getting abused, then I convo them privately and offer help.
I'll be switching to Discovery in the hopes of a more tolerant experience.

Edited by: Inserith Peon on 12/02/2009 14:24:46 As an experienced explorer who was once a regular in the Exploration channel I may give this Discovery one a try.
I used to try my best to help those asking questions, but yes, the umpteenth "What's a Waypost?" question does tend to get a response akin to a head hitting a desk. Most people should bear in mind that the majority of explorers are reasonably experienced players so can be quite jaded.... :) ;)
I eventually got kicked from the channel whilst having a witty exchange during a boring evenings scanning. Unfortunately, the 'esteemed' moderator decided that as he didn't understand the wit due to cultural differences between those from Europe and the US, he decided to threaten to kick the next person 'who said something re-tarded' (his words)... as I tried to explain to him why he didn't understand, poof I was gone... and I haven't been back since...
So, I completely agree with most of what has been written so far. Find a better channel, although, you are always at the mercy of whoever is logged in at that time, and of course the moderators. |

This addresses one of my biggest pet peeves in eve (or anywhere really). If you are going to hang out in a help channel or a channel with alot of new folks in it, you need to have patience. If you are one of these insufferable jackasses that hangs out in the starter corp channels or the help channels (or the exploration channel- change the damned title if you don't want people coming in asking questions) and all you do is keep telling people to RTFM or booting them, you are a maladjusted idiot. Period.
You are doing nothing more than getting off on feeling cool because you are part of the "in" crowd. You also have a cruel streak that enjoys abusing people. You don't belong in any cahannel for new people to seek help- you should set up your own channel with a name like "we're better than you and we know it."
I'm not writing from the perspective of a clueless noob- I've been around the game for a long time and I like to actually help people. It's easy to forget that the learning curve in eve is steep, and there is no single good reliable source for good information- how many of you now have a whole list of bookmarked web pages and printed out guides/ maps that you regularly use? It took a while to find this stuff.
Hate to break it to you uber explorers, but "what is a waypost" is a perfectly valid question. Yes, I found the answer on my own but it took alot of searching and I found a lot of wrong answers before I found the right one.
If you look around other forums you'll see that a lot of people consider the eve community to be elitist and cruel. Most of us know that's not true at all.. but if you were a week old noob that was curious about exploration and stumbled into the "exploration" channel, that's certainly the impression that you'd get. This is true also with alot of people that hang out in channels like FNA for years.. seemingly for no other reason than to feel superior by demonstrating how cool and knowledgable they are while they belittle people asking perfectly reasonable questions.
Bottom line is this. If you really want to be a helper/ educator you HAVE to be patient. If you are getting the same question over and over again, odds are there's a good reason for the question.. and the correct answer is not "RTFM noob." The correct answer is "I understand how you might have found it difficult to answer that question for your self.. here is a link to a guide that might help you..."
To all of you little twits making yourselves feel cool by picking on the new folks.. we all know what you are doing, acting out because at some point someone belittled and made fun of you. Here's a news flash.. all you are doing is making yourselves look even weaker. True signs of strength and experience are patience, kindness, compassion. If you want people to think you are cool, try those on for size.

I ventured into the help channel with a question I'd researched for a while without finding an answer. It was my first try on a "help" channel of any kind as I usually can find my answers on my own. I always "read the guide" but everyone who really plays the game knows that every guide leaves out some point.
As soon as it sounded like I could be called a carebear - three or four "helpers" jumped me with suggestions that I stop hiding in hi-sec - asking why anyone could waste sub money without being a PvPer - questions about capital ship building are ridiculous because Eve is a PvP game only - and more. One guy convo'ed me and talked me thru my stuck point. I sent him 50mil.

Astounding that you claim yourself to be a professional explorer, when just about everyone in Eve know that exploration used to be about waiting for your probes to finish scanning, not skill. This is not debatable.

Hate to break it to you but exploration has been DUMBED DOWN. WAY DOWN. Yes the old system was largely chance based, but it did require some fortitude, and having the gear/skills to get your scan time under 90 seconds made a BIG difference. Now any chimp who has a basic grasp of geometry and crap skills can scan down 95% of the sigs out there in minutes. You people saying "ooh, its interactive and takes player skill" please gimme a break... if you can figure out how to dress yourself in the morning the probing interface will be second nature within minutes.
Hands down the funniest thing on these boards are the new explorers saying "it takes too long!"
Hell, I miss the days of going through many sets of quests and days of scanning to nail the tough sigs. At least it kept the impatient kiddies out.
Quite honestly, dropping midwarp BM's to get optimum coverage of systems took a A LOT more skill than anything you have to do now in exploration.

Them's fighting words *rolls up sleeves*
It's probably just an initial reaction to every man and his dog wanting to probe out a wormhole but at the moment it's very competitive getting those plexes (and clearing them before someone else jumps in). I know its really a free for all but it's mildly annoying that the prime content of the new patch has the side effect of having everyone probing out plexes too. Never mind, adapt or die... already on it!
Also think the interest will die down once enough people have got themselves stuck in a pod full of implants in w-space :)
Also: I can be a spazz.
As for ease.... it is ludicrously easy to probe things now, and it's dumbed down to only needing one probe and just spamming for all sites. This removes a lot of the discernment. While probing WAS chance based, you still had to set up mid point bookmarks to launch probes AND have the patience of a saint while the numbers game did its work. There was a lot more skill and knowledge required compared to now.
However the new system IS better, mostly. With the ease as well I can see exactly why more people are doing explo stuff.
