Hello folks,
I'm a returning player on a new character, but over all I'm still pretty new to the game (never had anything larger then a cruiser and didn't get to do as much PvP as I wanted to last time around). I've usually always enjoyed support roles and was just thinking about two possibilities that sound appealing to me.
One is to be an Electronic Warfare expert. I generally like the Minmatar ships so using Webifiers and Target painters on targets for my wing mates to hammer sounds fun. Another idea that sounds appealing is to be an Armor repairer/Shield Booster/Cap Booster. Swoop in and repair my wing mates to keep them in the fight longer.
The thing that has always concerned me about being in a support role however is that regardless if I'm there or not, your guns are still going to work. So do either of my ideas have any real game use or am I just getting my hopes up? Also any other suggestions about support roles I might like would be appreciated.
Thanks! - Tobin

Yes that type of PvP'er is much used, as a fitting purely designed to kill the target as quickly as possible can not include Webs etc. Also be aware of drones, they can repair shields and armor too. Be warned though that sometimes people get annoyed if you don't heal them at the right time, because they 'died because of you'. Your corp mates shouldn't mind if you made a mistake but if your in an alliance with other peeps or what have you there can be a lot of pressure on a character type such as yours.
But nah honestly if you like it then just do it. |

Edited by: Jat Goodwin on 05/02/2009 12:02:44 From my experience Logistics (repairs) are really only "wanted" in large pvp battles or difficult missions as it allows the missioners to use less tank and do more dps. EW is much more useful in pvp. A single good ECM ship in a small pvp fight can ruin someones day. How can they shoot you if they can't target you? :D
Also ECM has more skills and ships then logistics, so I would focus on ECM more then logistics. Lots of people will want you if you can offer good support (leadership bonuses help to) but you will be some what useless by yourself.
When I started off I was in a small corp and I got my self a logistics ship to go along on missions and help out because I didn't have any ships or skills to really help them take down enemy's. The result was me only helping about 10% of the time because when a new wave of NPCs would warp in I would have to warp out because having 6 Battleships Agro you as a noobie isn't very fun...
Doing logistics and ECM are fun, but not really stand alone skills, its still good to be backed by a solid set of skills so you can switch to something else easily. Also ECM really isn't useful in missions. :| |

Just remember that while ewar frigs are very powerful, they're also very weak compared to their recon big brothers. Expect to lose them (They are cheap though!). |

The real problem with being an e-war or logistics specialist is that you have no way of making money. If you train to fly BC or BS with high DPS and good tanking, then you can use that both in PVP and for making ISK at PVE (missions or ratting). So, for most players, T2 ships are something you train later.
That said, I don't think any FC would ever be unhappy to have another e-war frigate or cruiser in the fleet.

I disagree. There's tons of opportunity to make money that way, it's just really really risky

I disagree, Joe.
There aren't many Ewar-specific skills. The rest of the skills you'd be training (Spaceship command, cap skills, fitting skills, etc) are useful regardless. It wouldn't be hard for him to get an AF or HAC or even a BC/BS for PVE

What I gather from your OP is that you're looking to be the support character, a very strange choice few people make, at least as their main. This is a good thing for you, as you'll most likely be wanted in PvP fleets. You should look into training for a Scimitar if you're well trained in Minmitar, a Guardian otherwise.
Minmitar EWAR is generally useful. Webs have taken a hit from a recent nerf but are by no means obselete. TPs are more useful than ever for missile ships and help fleet DPS overall, so it's great for the roles you want.
Hyena would probably be good practice. Hell, take a Bellicose out for a spin, fitted with some TP and the right skills you'd be a benefit to a fleet.
Another thing to consider, if you're going all out support are Leadership skills, where, if you're the squad booster in your fleet, you'll give bonuses depending on the skills you've trained. Having this will most likely benefit the fleet.

All good things to hear folks, thanks for your replys and great suggestions! I'll try as many of them as possible. I've always enjoyed the support roles in any MMO I've ever played just was curious to hear about it's viability in Eve...which is from what I've just read very high...and that makes me smile
Thanks folks - Tobin |

Edited by: Tzar''rim on 06/02/2009 09:30:04 Recons are always useful and the skills needed for them will help you with other stuff as well. The Logistics are cool but used a lot less and if you specialise to them right away you'll feel liek a holy priest; cool in groups but utterly useless when have to do something on your own.
Another thing is that specialising/focussing on a T2 ship right from the start might not be the best way to do things. I would urge you to get a more broad spectrum of skills enabling you to take care of yourself and, possibly, be able to do different things BEFORE 'committing' to a single shiptype/style.
There's nothing worse than only being able to do one thing in an MMO, and EVE is the one expection as it doesn't restrict you in any way. Don't then create your own restriction forcing you into a single playstyle early. |
