Originally by: Psiri Agreed, the Alliance PvP Tournament has no resemblance of actual PvP.
Oh it has.
It shows, that with even numbers 2 ECM ships on one side != I-win of this side.
It shows, that Abbadons might have a very high damage and big tank but still die do to small ships without a changs.
For the caldari. They are no solo pwn mobils but still viable fleet ships. Same for all forms of Missiles.
It shows, that Minmatar ships by far not useless (most used ship maybe the FleetStabber and large amounts of Hurricans).
Scram is many times used to break MDWs in the turny. Compareble to real tagling.
Just cloak isn't shown in the turny.
Some of you just see only 1on1, small fleets or big fleets .... but ONLY one of them and not all 3 kind of PvP. Vaga in fleet-ob = useless, sure. But same for Abbadon in small roming gangs ;).

No one having to fit a point is roughly equivalent to every player's ship having an extra mid slot for ECCM in small gang pvp.
Oh, and the falcon isn't allowed to warp out and come back. |

Originally by: UMEE you forgot to mentioned that abaddons are morbidly OP - toughest tank, highest dps. but other than that, yeah I feel the game is balanced nicely.

That must be the answer then, to balance falcons, give every ship in the game an extra mid slot. |

There are at least two more factors that are different to actual combat:
Smartbombs are utilised more because there are no gates or other objects to flag sentries / CONCORD. This, in turn, has also encouraged the use of sentry drones.
The second reason is skillpoints. This has two effects: A. on average most pilots in the tournament have good skills for the ships they fly. In real combat however the distribution is often much bigger, which may clearly favour one side over the other and B. since damage is more dependent on skills than tanking is, the tournament environment allows for more high damage strategies than normal combat usually would. The relative equality of skillpoints also pronounces the base differences of ships, and as such the ship choices matter more. In general, there is less flexibility.
As for why Ishtars have been popular, least a few reason seem likely: drones have usefulness under EW which has been present in abundance, they also have damage type flexibility (admittedly less so than missiles but regardless), they are point efficient for the damage output and finally their effective range is very good in their class. Similar reasons explain why caracals have been popular aswell for instance: they also offer EW resistance and high effective range aswell as damage type leniency. These characteristics are much more favoured by tournament conditions than (common) "actual" combat.

It seems most people are trying to make the point that real PVP is not composed of evenly matched teams facing eachother in deadspace. But no one is addressing the fact that real PVP is blob warfare, unbalanced numbers, or camps, and frankly your fittings don't matter as much your numbers do. The alliance tourny isn't perfect for gauging balance, but it is pretty good.
I will give credit to the crowd talking about the lack of tackle in the tourny, but I contend that you could take many of these teams and simply add a couple interceptors and they would be doing pretty well in small gang pvp.
And to the falcon crowd: I know that there is no cloaking in tourny and that rooks cannot warp away. But people are mentioning some decent tactics like cheap sniper fits. And in the tourny we are seeing Sensor damps and drones used against the rooks. Or they are simply called primary and instapopped pretty quick. People also forget that a falcon/rook is slow as a brick and quick ships can chase them away pretty fast.

This.
Until the alliance tournament allows warping & cloaking
I think they should make battles take place over a whole system. Introduce probing, cloaking etc. Maybe a systemwide ping every few minutes that decloaks ships, or some kind of rule set for cloaks. Anyway, would be alot slower matches than what we have now.
Maybe even have objectives, with one team attacking and other defending etc.
But all that said, tourny's are slowly looking more and more like real pvp since I saw that gang of fleet stabbers wipe the floor. |

the tournements showcase one type of pvp, organized and balanced matches. It also shows that if every engagement was fought at roughly 50km, lots of things go pop that wouldn't go pop before.
I for one think that the tournement is good for promoting an alternative pvp structure, not something to replace current pvp but something they could introduce into high sec. Game needs more player run leagues |
