Edited by: Azraeljbs on 07/02/2009 00:50:57 Here's what we know.
-CCP launches the "Need For Speed Initiative" bringing less lag to EVE. -More improvements come with time and they implement a way for us to notify them in advance of large fleet fights. -Even more improvements come with the patching of Quantum Rise.
Now CCP is preparing to launch a large expansion in Apocrypha. With the Apocrypha expansion CCP is releasing EVE once again in it's retail form. This means that hundreds of thousands if not possibly millions of retail copies of EVE will be out there on the store shelves. I give a very modest estimate of at least 60,000 copies sold. This is roughly 60,000 new players of which maybe half will stay(again modest estimates here, it will most likely be many many more).
So my question for CCP is this. Are your servers really prepared for this type of load or even prepared for a best case scenario of 100 to 300 thousand new players? Or are we going to end up seeing more lag issues like we used to have. Apocrypha will be introducing over 2500 new systems, so this is even more load on the cluster. Not to mention that these new systems most likely will not be populated 24/7 like K-space. So K-space could become more crowded and laggier.
With recent events in the EVE universe drawing more interest to the game than I've seen in my 2 years of playing I really do feel that we need an answer to this. I know the DEVS are not dumb and have most likely already thought of this, but I think the general EVE populace would like to know your plans or what you may be doing to deal with the possible huge influx of new players running missions, mining, joining 0.0 PVP corps and generally crowding EVE even more. The vast improvements you've made this last year were phenomenal, and your doing a great job of listening to your player base so please add a small blog, or reply in this thread explaining how you plan to handle the influx of fresh meat please.

Of 300,000 people the most we've had online is 1/6th of them simultaneously. Even if 60,000 new players began playing the very first week (they won't; it'll be over weeks or months), 1/6th is 10,000. I'm sure CCP can more or less go from 48,000 to 58,000 peak users without the current experience changing (meaning the plenty of lag at gate camps and FW today will still be there then, but it's not like JITA is suddenly going to stop working again).

The players will filter in over a period of months most likely, and even if 60,000 new people sign up how many of them will really be added to the totality of concurrent users at any given time? Probably just a fraction. I'd be mildly surprised if the concurrent user count ever hits 60,000 in 2009, and 70,000 would really be pushing it IMO.
The real assault on the servers will be when ambulation is launched, but I don't think that ambulation will take up resources off the same server as open space so maybe it won't be a problem.

If CCP sells millions (hell half a million) of boxes in the store in a few months, I think the only thing that's going to limit them will be how fast hardware can be shipped to the servers. In the years I've played this game, CCP has never backed away from buying more, stronger hamsters, and bigger wheels for them to run in, and the EVE64/stackless stuff strikes me as a clear indicator they're doing all they can to make sure EVE is in peak form.
Do I think this means a 2-3000 person Jita won't cause enough heat to turn London into a tropical climate? No, clearly a massive jump in players will be rough at first, but I think they'll adapt.
Just imagine how much they could expand the server with an extra 10-20 million USD a year. |

Plus its not like they can convert it over to that dead currency of theirs so they will need to spend it on something. |

Except the wormhole systems aren't instances, and new players aren't likely to even know how to find them. |

Joke, right? I mean no one can be that oblivious? Jita does stop working, pretty much every weekend, the only way they kick it back to life is by reinforcing the node. Now, I do not know what CCP will have to do to handle 6k players in a single system.... they would probably have split Jita into more dedicated nodes, or however it works.
But, anyway, saying, that Jita will not stop working again is like saying that there will never be a snowfall in Siberia.

I can't see them selling too many copies of the software in retail. That just sounds like a plan made of fail to me. It didn't work the first time. Why would it work this time?

Well, the first time they release a retail box the publisher folded about the same time so it really wasn't advertised very well. We'll see how well Atari do with the ball. |

Probably not, I wonder how many boxed sets there will be. I live in the sticks and plan to buy one.
I'd say half of all sales will be to current customers though. In a way the destruction of BoB may actually assist sales as it gives some highlights to the game prior to release of the box set. |
