Are any of you looking forward to elite 4 coming out? its promising a massive universe with out of ship experience and planet landings. This could pose serious competition to eve. Time for EVE 2 to start moving i think :)

Edited by: NTRabbit on 04/08/2004 07:32:19 I googled 'elite 4' and all i found was a 20 line FAQ.
And whats the deal with "EVE 2", seriously this game is still going and is still at the top of the latest technology and best gfx pile, why on earth would people want to speculate about EVE 2 already? Tell me, are you itching for Doom 4 and Halflife 3 too?
Further reading of the short FAQ indicates that Elite 4 is not even planned to be an MMOG, just a SP/MP game much like Freelancer
Originally by: David Braben 4. Will Elite 4 be multi-player?
Both single- and multi-player versions are planned, it is now likely the single-player version will be released first.

Ian Bell has nothing to do with Elite 4 (or 2 or 3 for that matter).
Elite 4 is being done by David Braben's company Frontier Developments.

Elite 4 has been rumbling along for so long with no apparent progress, I think we'll be lucky if it ever sees the light of day.

You seem to be missing a few there...
But if you were serious, I'm afraid I'll have to correct you...
Frontier Development had nothing to do with Jumpgate so it cannot be called or linked with Elite 4.

Funny to see the rumors of EVE 2 starting to fly. Two threads on 2 forums here mention it. At this stage, consideration of a sequel to EVE is in its infancy. There's a lot of stuff locked in the minds of the Dev and Content teams, just waiting for a chance to come out, stuff that will be seen in EVE.

Elite IV has been allegedly in development for a quite a few years now. At one point, I believe it was even cancelled.
They have been advertisign various vacancies down at Fronier Developments over the past couple of years too. So they must be doing something...

please dont get me wrong i think this game looks very good but in reply to what NTrabbit said the technolody and gfx are nowhere near state of the art, even when eve came out the reviews commented that the gfx wouldnt push any pc above the minimum spec. If you cant turn everything up on eve with no problems then you really should get a new pc :)

Yeah FasterThanJesus (cool name btw) is right, Elite IV is allegedly in development. BUT, David Breadbin as he was known on the Elite forums, is a piece of xxxx who jealously defends his Elite patent with his life. There were a couple of promising elite games out there (nothing which would rival any modern space game - these were just fan made remakes using a modified version of the old elite engine), which got cancelled and he is notorious for not letting anything slip regarding elite. I would expect the game in many, many, many years time; and by then, EVE will hopefully be going strong, X2 will have been released, and he will have some serious competition. Mind you, with the Elite franchise, it'll probably sell by the bucketload. Funny tho, aint it? Even though I dislike Braben, I still think First Encounters is one of the best space game available (ummm once its fully patched with JJFFE of course).

Though I too would like to see a good Elite 4 come out. I suspect that it is something we might well be very disapointed with. Us older gamers all tend to get all misty eyed and gooey over our memories of Elite. But perhaps that's where it should stay now, as a memory, so that us 'old farts' can keep saying "well in my day when we played Elite...." If we are honest with ourselves Elite was actually a very basic game, but it had the benifit of being the first space trading/combat game out and set the standard for everybody else to follow. I just feel that now any Elite game would be playing catch-up with Eve and other like games, and would need something so inovativally different that is simply would not be the same game.

How much? And, most importantly, does using virtual money constitute profiting from copyright material. (why am i even asking this question )

I think this does violate the ULA, but it may be argued, maybe? Just tell ccp that you are buying it as a part of your EVE experience as in flight entertainment. And is therefore a commodity to be traded in EVE so the exchange of isk for it is perfectly legit.
