I have ample time before my next reamp so I trained up Capital Ships IV + Gallente Carrier IV + Jump Drive Operation II. I can now undock a Thanatos, big whoop. I am only in a research mode at this point. I want to determine if I should dedicate a Remap to the Thanatos or not. I could also follow the Black Ops pathway as I have large investments in Cov Ops and Recons. With all this in mind, I have some generic questions:
1) What should I include in a training plan to really fly a Thanatos? 2) What are the typical end-goals for a Thanatos?
Sane Speculation: My drone skills are maxed so in that area I would train for fighters + fighter mods and related skills. Training for Capital mods is also an obvious necessity.
Wild Speculation: I have never seen this discussed on the forums but I had the idea that I could fit a Thanatos for lo sec incursions. A goal like that would drive and define a training plan for a long while. Also, I have read that Lvl V missions are doable in a Thanatos, but that you could get easily be ganked by a small focused team of pirates, i.e., it is really risky.
Just research at this point, but any comments you can offer would be greatly appreciated. |

Won't fit through the acceleration gates in incursions....and I think the fighters would probably get murdered to death.
L5's are doable, though. |

Well, the Thanatos is largely considered a PvE carrier due to the drone bonus, so you could always sit your carrier at a POS and assign fighters out to alts/corpmates to run anoms. Carriers are also very useful for moving fitted ships around, so if you ever go to nullsec you can help out. Just be careful about who you tell about your carrier capabilities, you might get jumped.
It really depends on where you want to take your carrier, but you should definitely train the two jump drive skills (operation and Calibration?). Most alliances assume 4's on each, so if you don't have this and are in a carrier train, you might get left behind because you used all your fuel/couldn't make it all the way to target system. |

Sounds like you care way too much about SP per hour if you're choosing skills based on your attributes and not, you know, stuff that will be useful. |

L5 mish ofc It isn't all that risky, I don't think I've ever had to actually warp out of a mission due to pirate threat, been running them for like 18 months now
ie. by the time you actually get caught and killed, the thing will have paid for itself so many times over that you'll just be able to undock one of your many other carriers and finish the mish |

Incursions are off limits, wormholes are mainly triage based, L5 missions require friendly/empty systems practically.
The best thing for a thanatos to do is spamming anomalies in a gankfit, mine runs ring sanctums at average 36M tick with occasional 40M's - and that's with carrier IV only. At carrier V you'll hit 120M/hour consistently if you do it right: watch fighter pathing and target painters, pre-warp to next sites etc. |

Carriers get used a lot in wspace. In the C5-6 they are used for escalations and RR. I've seen people running c1-3 sites with carriers. (Built in the hole.) That said you should forget solo ratting in a carrier. The only way to do safely is in a large NS alliance deep in their protected space. Ratting in a carrier in wspace doesn't work well as sleepers will shoot your drones/fighters, and sleepers are bloody hard to hit with fighters, heavy drones, and sentries. (You'll need a painter.) Carriers are generally used to to haul things in NS and repair other ships. |

I'm surprised that you even had 1 serious answer to this question. I think the eve community has gone soft, often people just replied: if you dont know you're not ready to fly it or something along those lines.
the best advice I can honestly give you though is join a corporation that is 'newb' friendly and has use of a carrier pilot. They can answer both of your questions. Just make sure that you don't get screwed over by a corp that just wants to pop a carrier |

Not entirely true.
Ogre II's are very effective at wasting Sleeper frigs in up to C3's once the frigs are orbiting you. I and a mate in an ex corp used to run a pair of lowly rr Domi's in C3's with just Ogres as dps, and they were extremely good at it with one ODL fitted.. We added drone nav comps to speed em up a bit:)
The same mate used a Thanatos in null to bling Sanctums, and I know for a fact he made a very large amount of isk from doing that in a short space of time. The box said "Requires Windows-á2000 or better", so I installed Linux. |

He is not in a starter corp. Read the thread.
Carriers are usually used either for repping your fleet (look up Triage Module) or hauling rigged ships around/relocating. Or lvl5 missions of course, if you're into PVE. |

Read it - still confused, anyways to answer questions:
1) What should I include in a training plan to really fly a Thanatos? - Jump drive calibration, you wouldnt believe how nicely that skill is great in terms of convinience - fighters 4 atleast - capitel mods training: shield and armor RR, armor tanking - perfect cap skills
2) What are the typical end-goals for a Thanatos? - gal carrier 5, fighters 5, bombers 5, perfect armor tanking -> NYX - training Nyx sitter along the way, it takes around 1B isk and 4 mths to train :)
