Dear CCP,
I love functional, usable interfaces. They should be easy to learn, easy to remember, and allow users to efficiently fulfill tasks.
Please change the user interface which is currently used on SiSi to move scan probes in the system map. I am specifically talking about the boxes with arrows on it.
Instead of clicking on arrows please make it possible to - left click on the box, and while left mouse button is pressed, move the box on the current plane along the mouse's x-y-axis ("left, right, towards you, away from you") - right click on the box, and while right mouse button is pressed, move the box along the 3rd dimension following the mouse's y-axis ("up and down") - let the camera follow the box (box is always centered on screen)
(Use the same system for positioning POS modules.)
All necessary methods / routines are there (box movement). Just get rid of the arrows and allow clicks on the box to be detected and to be handled if clicked on the according mouse buttons (I dare to say.. 1-2 hours for someone who's deep into it?).
Whenever I had to anchor POS modules, I ranted about the user interface and was always wondering why it was so complicated to use.. not only did you have to hit the arrows.. they were usually occluded by the box, you had to move the camera around (which isn't exactly an easy thing to do), then you could hit the arrow, but needed to move the cam again, because you wanted to see where the POS modules should be anchored.. arrrrghhh...
Ok, now I love scanning, and once I saw this "pos module anchoring" interface mixed into the new scanning user interface, I was.. let's say I was quite surprised. And my thoughts about it manifested and I needed to get in here and write this post and tell you that:
"FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, CHANGE THIS INTERFACE!"
Best wishes Sprobe |

There was a beautiful game called Homeworld where selecting a location in 3D space was done on the 2D plane normally via mouse, and the up/down direction was added when you held the shift key down. It was very fast to use, especially combined with the UI feedback it gave, which basically consisted of what EVE has as the tactical overlay and some extra lines to mark the target location.

this is what I was thinking.
move once for X,Y
then auto turn camera
click again to move z

It would be cool to adjust the scan radius by holding both buttons down and moving up/down left/right. In addition to the other suggestions.

They don't have anyone specialized in human-computer interaction..it's very common for technical people to make great software/hardware that is uselessly hard to interact with.

Edited by: Sanche Tehkeli on 10/02/2009 10:16:48 ok posting here for it seems to be a constructive thread. On the new probing interface on solarmap :
- currently probes name is displayed above the sphere so that is overlaps the sphere controls and you have to zoom in/out to catch the arrows. Name displayed on a back plane would be better ;
- when you start moving your probe there is nothing to mark its former position not the available axis. I think of a, err... grid origin centered on the first position (0,0,0) with the three axis lines visible and a fourth line from this origin to the new position (like the ones on the tactical overlay) ;
- if it's possible, let the player adjust its timer for probe warping(2-5 secs), or, cherry : a key to hold the probe and prevent it to warp, like you suspend the overview, gain : the move is only send to the serveur when the key is released, plus it may allow to cancel the move ;
- some 3D grid on the solarmap, 2, 4, 8 or 16 au wide, centered on the star or the player ;
- on an industrial view : if "used" probes are each an unique item in DB, they should keep their used lifespan. It would keep a market for them and you would not spare them everywhere
Moar feedback to come. |

Or they could just revert to the old probing system. The new probing system is a travesty.

Signed. POS boxses suck hard. They suck even harder in probe movement system. If at all possible could we pretty please get rid of damn boxses alltogether and use to proposed system (by the op) on the probe location marker (that seems to scale rather nice with all the different zoom levels). Also, can we pretty pleace center our camera on the signature we are trying to locate, Hell, perhaps even give us button to warp fresh launcher probe into the area (not on top of it ofc, but let's say somewhere around 4 to 8 AU ?).
Different mouse buttons, mouse in x-y and hotkey for z, whatever as long as I dont have to hit the damn arrows from 25 AU.
