Just uhm. How... 'fun' are these? I'm having fun going around poking at ships on EVEWiki. The Chimera looks really smexy (I prefer Caldari ships myself usually) just not sure if well... It'll be worth the trouble thinking of using one.
I prefer doing combat, with drones, but I tend to hate Gallente ship designs. Too bulky and odd. Amarr isn't bad really but the Chimera just looks REALLY nice. But I'm not fond of the Battlecruiser/Command Ships of the Caldari. Well some of the BCs, but the Command Ships all use the design I don't like.
I'm just kind of bored is all. Training skills and lookin' at ships and... I had the forum open.

carriers are fleet ships, and logistics at that. Not advicable to solo in unless you like loosing them. Get into a copr that got cap fleets and you are golden tho, or use it as BS support with Triage.

Carriers:
1. Sit at POS assigning drones 2. Sit at POS repping eachother 3. Move between POS using jump drives.
Unless you got alot of other friends, carriers and POS, not worth it.

Somehow when you imagine a Carrier I think of swarm of drones nom'ing everything in its way.
That might be Starcraft influence though.
I just REALLY like the design of the Chimera and I've been known in MMOs to pick looks over actual usability.

You can't really use them without proper backup (and wit hthat I mean a fewmore carriers and 30-50 BS/support fleet) safely, you will need to have eyes and ears in closeby systems to keep em safe. They will almost always be at a POS or docked, deploying them needs to be planned.
If you don't you'll be a very fat, very dead target very fast. It's like driving a Mercedes S class in a ghetto, at 2am.... and there's no lights.

rofl, what a suiting comparison xD
Well well, what he tells is the truth. Starcraft Carriers are so uber, because your enemy could only field a limited supply of Cruisers and Valkyries. Here you get Zerged with frigates, cruisers and battleships and you're a dead hulk, floating with a couple thousand frozen corpes in and around it's smoldering hull, shattered and twisted.

Hrrmmm. Disappointing really. Carriers are too big for high-sec also and I'm not sure how good ratting is in low-sec when I paint a big shiny bullseye on my hull.
Why do all the ships that I like aesthetically always suck? :( (Well not ALWAYS)

Chimera is in no way a bad ship, but its not a solo ship. Imo Chimera and the Amarr one is tied for the best carrier.

Wasn't my intention to say it's a bad ship. Just bad for what I had in mind.

There, there... I feel your pain. I'm having the same issues with CovOps ships in terms of what I WANT them to do and what they CAN do in the game. *Sob*

Hehe. 99% of the time I look at the information screens I got on my screen, like the overview, scanner, HUD, enemy status etc etc. So to me how the ships look is rather irrelevant. Tho I like Caldari designs best if I have to go with one :)

I've noticed PvPers tend to have very cluttered screens. I just mission now so I have a lot of room ;)

You dont necessarily need a huge gang to operate a carrier, it really depends on usage. I use my carrier to jump my own mini fleet of ships to 0.0 POS's for ratting. A bs sized hull for ratting and a selection of t2 hulls for pvping if hostiles jump into system. Then load all the loot into the carrier and jump it back home to sell / reprocess. I wouldnt rat in a carrier for sure, but its a great platform to get the ships you need to a profitable location and back safely.

Edited by: Doc Mexallon on 12/02/2009 12:27:16 Can you assign fighters, warp to a safespot and cloak? Or do you lose control over the fighters when you cloak? You wouldn't even need a POS then.
Thanatos seems the most fun for the assign fighters trick as it gets an extra bonus to fighter damage rather than logistics.

Most people just orbit a pos as close as they can when assigning fighters, then they can just slowboat back behind the shields when the need arises

Edited by: Paulo Banderez on 12/02/2009 13:32:02 actually ratting in a carrier is a great idea in lowsec. Maut or Alparena are going systems. In fact EC-P8R also has nice rats

Carriers do not suck at all, they are extremely useful for many purposes ranging from hauling to logistics to combat.
What you're talking about is ratting and using a carrier to rat is like putting the square peg in the round hole. That doesn't mean carriers don't serve an important purpose.
Their primary purpose at this point is for large scale pvp but that may change with this expansion if the NPCs are as tough as they're promising so who knows, we might find outselves ratting in carriers before we know it.
