I have been playing the game for a while now, tryed out all the races...all the careers...so kinda have the basic knolwedge about starting each race...but what i always have wondered about r the minmatar...
WHY do people say it's EVE in Hard Mode....they always say it takes most skills to play Minmatar well, it's a skill-intensive race...
...but than again...all races require lots of skills to be good....so what makes the Minmatar different?
I need some good explanation..please don't repeat what i have said above how skill intensive they are...tell me an exact proof...what exacly makes em so harder than the others? in short term, long term.....whatsoever...just give a concrete proof PLEASE!

Most races use 1 weapon type and drones, caldari can use both turrets and missiles but not at the same time. Minmatar has a lot of split weapon system ships, so they will/can use both turrets as missile launchers at the same time. This is ofcourse not always optimal but that's how the ships are setup, nothing much you can change on that. So minnie has to train projectiles, missiles and drones to be proficient in all of their ships.
other 3 races either shield or armor tank, ofcourse you might armor tank a caldari at times, or shield tank a Gallente but normally you don't. Some minnie ships armor tank, some shield tank. So to be proficient in all minnie ships you have to train for both tanking types.
So, compared to others you HAVE to train 1 one more weapon system that others and you HAVE to train both tanking systems. Apart from that they don't have good tanks or do good dps so to make the most out of them you have to be versatile and use tactics rather than brute force. And being versatile means... more training.
Navigation for instance, if you don't train that on an amarr ship you're just a tad slower, if you don't train it on minnie you just lost the main advantage of your race.

I'll add the positives of minmatar, as a poster above described the most important negatives. Simply, some of the best ships for PvP in the game are Minmatar (Rifter, Sabre, and Vagabond). They also have excellent PvP ships in every class (T1/T2, frigate, cruiser, battlecruiser) smaller than Battleships.
I consider pvp Battleships a negative for Minmatar, and that came about over a period of time (ship HP increase, T2 ammo changes, Sensor Booster/Tracking Computer changes). Ironically, even this can be spun into a "positive" because once you can fly a range of Minmatar ships well, cross training other races can be as simple as training one new weapon system and another race's ship skills.

Also, the slot layout on most of the ships is more evened out rather than low or mid heavy. This means you have to be pretty proficient at the modules you do use rather than just dual repping with that extra slot you would have on another race's ship. It's a nice trade-off though in the long run since you don't HAVE to pick a ship with a full row of low or mid slots, but rather can use a more diverse setup. Again, it's a double edged sword when you need a target painter, afterburner, shield booster, shield hardener, web, and cap booster...oops you're already over the limit on mids on most minmatar ships there.
Also, tracking speed on projectile turrets is horrible at first. Add to that the speed and missile changes recently and it was a trifecta of "ouch" for low skill Minmatar players who rely on all 3.
In the end, it's a really fun set of ships and I don't regret choosing Minmatar at all. I love my rifter, rupture, cyclone, typhoon and maelstrom ships.

Because they dont specialize in anything. So if you want to be very good at a particular thing, it takes longer to get there with Minmatar.

Just time.
All your race gives you is a starting point. Beyond that, it is largely cosmetic. Your race affects your origin and portrait, and your starting point (skills/attributes/starting faction, ect..) but not much else.
With enough time, Minmatar can do anything any other race can do. It'll just take a little longer to get there.

hehe i'm really happy with your answers thank you all!
so if i understood correctly, minmatar has basicly the same starting point as the other races...but the ships require more weapon and tank types to be efficient...and that would mean where a caldari with missles would be more than enough, a minmatar would have to get guns aswell...also i heard that minmatar got low CPU...so just shield tank can't do, you must both shield and armor tank...and speed tank with faster ships...
....so i hope i didn't get stuff wrong....but i don't see the minmatar now as a hard mode race....i see them as versatile...cuz...for example, in a fleet, where everyone plays an important role...caldari would go dmg, ammar tank(i hope i got this correct, i just have this view of the races)....and minmatar could do several tasks just fine(not all at one time ofcourse, but any single task of choice)...
...so why looking at minmatar as a hard race...why not see it as a race where if u can't decide what role to play, you just switch roles from time to time...as i see it you can't get bound by one role and by that be limited playing that role the whole EVE characters life :p...
I've been watching the Hurricane just now, and well...it seems pretty versatile...has bonus to ALL(if i'm correct) projectiles, so can play many roles in the fleet, can face off enemies of all sizes, if fitted properly....plus if the large weaponry requires more capacitor...i think it has enough slots to fit expanders no?...so a pretty damn good ship...

There are some minmatar ships that follow the 'normal' route; armor tank+turrets, ofcourse one can still shield tank them if needed but they tend to focus on armor. These are the Rifter, Rupture, Hurricane, Tempest. They can still use missiles as well but mostly they'll use their extra high slots for Nos or Neut. So if you want to start somewhere, train up armor tanking and turrets, that'll do you well till you have a solid SP basis and you can start diversifying.
Just to make sure; Minnie ships don't armor and shield tank at the same time (that's what I got from your reply), you choose which one to go for for a cetain ship/situation.
And yes, versatility is both a blessing as a curse. It's less dull and you have more options but it also means that it'll never be good at one thing as a race/ship that's fully focussed on it.

It's worth noting that you can usually circumvent the requirements for some extent. For example, many minmatar ships have missile slots, but often times you can get away with using those slots for nos/neuts. Most minnie ships are suited to either shield or armor tanking. However, it's possible to do either on most ships, and you can always just fly the ships that correspond to the ships you have trained.
it's not "EVE in Hard Mode" in that they are less powerful, but in that they're not as simple as the other races.

Yes...perhaps it sounded bad :p, i meant either shield or armor tank...not both at once :p

heh this is very well put right there :p
...well i hope i'll play minmatar again sometime...i kinda have to figure out what i want of the game...i'm currently playing caldari and things are going quite fast with them...in developing i mean...
Btw...i have also considered the roleplay approach of the race (i have been making a for and against list for minmatar vs caldari)..the minmatar have loads of options...and if i may say so an eventful future in the story of EVE....as they r just begining to even themselves up with the rest....i even came up with a tale of a roleplay character i would make if i choose to play minmatar...
...btw nvm this...
How about the capital ships....the naglfar came to my attention as a quite unique ship, only in looks, i'm not familiar with capital ships as i never got into one :p ... What is the difference in minmatars capital ships and T2 vessels compared to other races?

It always amuses me that sooner or later a new player starts asking about capital ships. I did it too. Bigger is better is a hard mindset to get out of.
Coming up on 3 years later I don't know much more about capital ships than I learnt from my questions back then. Capital ships are way, way waaaay down the line for you. By the time you have got to the point of training them you'll know this game so thoroughly the choice of race will be completely irrelevant.
As for T2, same applies as for previous answers, just slightly better performance for a lot more (but acheivable) cash.

The Minmatar carrier (Nidhoggur) gets range bonuses to both Remote Armor Repair and Remote Shield Transfer, making it very versatile. It suffers from less effective hp than the Gallente Thanatos, and lacks the Thanatos' fighter damage bonus. For general capital fleet usage (remote repping POS shields and modules, and remote repping others in your fleet), it's second best behind the Thanatos for the reasons above.
The Naglfar, Minmatar dreadnaught, is the only dread with 5 high slots. Sadly, it's weapon systems are split like many Minmatar sub-capitals - 2 turret slots, and 2 launcher slots. Assuming you fit damage modifier modules in some of the low slots (all dreads typically do, you're at a disadvantage with the split weapon system. This also increases training time compared to other dreads by more than a month. It's third or fourth in overall damage output during capital ship combat, well behind the Revelation and Moros, and sometimes behind Phoenixes as well. Since capital projectiles (like smaller ones) and citadel torpedoes do not use capacitor, the Nag has the advantage of being ready to jump out quicker after exiting a siege cycle (Revs and Moroses often need to wait and regen cap).
Overall, the only good reason to train for a Naglfar is it's the coolest looking ship in EVE. That, and sometimes the other dread pilots in your gang will accidentally target you instead of the POS they planned on shooting.

...so that would leave me either with(if go minmatar) specialising the hurricane for all, but thus limiting me to some higher lv missions, or POS ops if i'm not wrong....what can a BC do after all...or going for BS...most peeps do...

If someone else hasn't mentioned this, Minmatar also have the fastest ships. Doesn't usually matter all that much unless you pick, say, an Intercepter, where your speed is your greatest defense.

Because supply and demand...not effectiveness...are what dictates ship prices in EVE.
I fly a Rokh, even though everyone will tell you that a Raven is better for what I do (PvE missions). Why? Because I like the way it looks. Thats it.
Not everyone buys ships for the same reasons, but the market does not care what your motives are. All it cares about is supply vs demand.
There are less people producing tier 3 Tech 1 battleships, so there is less supply. That is what is driving up prices for those ships. My Rokh was $130 million when I bought it. A Raven was around 60 or 70 Million, even though the ships are comperable.

The Typhoon is a great mission running ship. Before the introduction of Tier 3 Battleships, it was a popular non-Raven choice of pilots running level 4's.
edit: I consider it a great mission runner to this day.
Quote: ...oh and i've been watching the market...the Maelstorm has somewhat the same price as the Rokh of caldari...but maelstorm is a missions ship, and rokh a pvp ship...and it's the same with the tempest and raven...2 opposite roles and the same price...why is that so?
The big reason is, EVE changes over time. Slightly over 2 years, before the Warp Core Stabilizer changes, the Raven was somewhat popular for PvP. One small mercenary group, Burn Eden, was well known for using mostly just two ships - the Sabre (interdictor for tackling) and the Raven. They inflicted ridiculous amounts of damage (even if you reduce their claims by half) against "carebears" in 0.0 space.
EVE changes all the time. While some may view that Minmatar got hit somewhat hard by changes over the last 2 years (and especially in the most recent changes to speed modifiers), there could be a new, positive change right away the corner (e.g. making Target Painters useful in PvP). To give another example, Gallente recons were hit hard when Sensor Dampeners were changed, but got a boost when Warp Scrams were changed to deactivate Microwarp Drives. Many classes of Amarr ships saw gains (changes to EM armor resists, the emergence of the locus-rigged Pulse Apocalypse, change to the Sac among them). After years of being regarded as nothing special for PvP, the Apocalypse is extremely popular and useful now.
The great thing about EVE is if your favorite ship or setup gets nerfed, you can always cross train to something else. Your only option in traditional MMOs is to re-roll or level grind up an alt. |

Because the best storylines are locked in that race.
Unbiased examples: The Ammatars Kameiras
Starting skills are irrelevant in the long term, you can train whichever skills you like from day one. The variable you have is what meaning you can give your character's existence in new eden. Minmatar sebiestors and Brutors have fine starting attributes, so there's no reason why not to :P

You forgot the Ray of Matar....i liked that one most...and i'm hoping to se a sequal(sry if i spelled it wrong..and sry if there is a story after, i don't know about it)...
Uhm....heh Typhoon for mission runer...heh that's a plus for the minmatar if you ask me...everyone i asked sayed i should go for the maelstorm, heh i'm relieved i can do high lv missions with the phoon and buy it for far less ISK...
Oh btw...i actually moved on to character creation...i came to see a lot of bonuses for the minmatar that i oversaw b4...
so...i came up with 2 similiar starting setups...brutor both of them, and military career...i used this character creation tool ...these r the 2 codes: 131111103200 and 131111203200 I kinda tried to make a balanced character, and i'm sorta sad that i couldn't get intelligence a bit higher but heh..it's brutor...dum brutes XD...

The soldier can start with Gunnery V and Small Projectiles V, and therefore train T2 autocannons / artillery pretty much right away.
The special forces can start with frigate IV (and immediately train cruisers), Navigation V and Afterburner V (and train High Speed Maneuvering for Microwarp Drives).

Im a 1 year old minmatar which does some 0.0 pvp and missions.
PvE: I use a maelstrom for missions (lots of tank and lots of damage) I use a typhoon for 0.0 ratting (Cheap and can fit a cloak without screwing damage)
PvP: Tempest: Fit it with close range weapons and a buffer tank (no repper) its a great ship that is agile, fast, can tackle and do nice damage. Vagabond: T2 cruiser, One of the fastest ships in the game that can only be caught by an interceptor. This means you can pick your fight and always get out when it gets to hot. which is the minmatar philosophy (hit and run) Wolf: T2 frigate, Just alot of fun to fly and does some nice damage to.
For a very general overvieuw of the races in a fleet: Amarr: Tank and Damage (dies fast to cap neutralizers) gallente: Great for solo work and also great for fleet support Caldari: Jamming Minmatar: Tackling and hit and run missions (great for small skirmishes)
The minmatar capships tend to suck, but dont let that get you down. I have very rarely seen a situation where for example an amarr dread would have survived over a minmatar dread. This is mainly due to the fact that you either have a fleet to kill a dread (any dread) or you dont, doesnt really matter what dread it is. When they bring enough ships, you die.
P.S.: Rapier, vagabond, sabre, hurricane, rupture, rifter? are all minmatar ships and all very very welcome in any pvp fleet.

Oh and...if i had a sponsor....and could start of a new minmatar...with let's say....100 milion ISK...and a place open in a low sec oriented corp (pvp,ratting,pirating..POS-ops)...how should i develop the character?
...i though of getting some expensive implants first..buy a hurricane and fly it within 3-4 days...train learning skills...well memory and intelligence, than those SOCT advanced learning skills for memory and intel...the other later ofcourse :p |

You are seriously over analyzing this.
Annyways. I would say special forces and only cheap +1 implants, you will lose your pod as a noob in pvp so exspensive implants would be a waste.
Just train up to a cruiser and some speed/tackling skills first and then all the tier 1 learning skills to lvl 4.
Then train a battlecruiser (or t2 frigate) and some random skills before training all tier 2 learning skills to 4. After that you might have found out how not to get pod killed and have some experience. At this point you should start training t2 weapons and tank.
Shortlist: -Cruiser -Speed skils (Microwarp drive , afterburner) -Tackling skills (Warp jammer , Webifier) -tier 1 learning to 4 -battlecruisers and tank {shield and armor) + maybe some gunnery. -Tier 2 learning skills to 4 -t2 weapons and whatever you want. -

...now let's say i did that and crossedover right of the start...it would take me some time to even myself up with the caldari starters, time which i could've used on moving on to minmatar cruisers or more.....so is this worth it?

AMarr needs lazers armor tanking and capacitor skills Gallente needs drones, hybrids and armor tanking
you will use drones are also used on minmatar ships as is armor tanking.

1) Buy it from contracts for an obscene amount of ISK. 2) Work for it by working for the pirats that make it, Angels I think. That's gonna make you pretty unpopular with most of empire though.

Quote: There was umm lots of bla bla bla something after the first post, but did anyone mention your characters race has pretty much nothing to do with anything?
Yes. I did in the 7th Post.
Your characters race has to do with the backstory and your portrait. Even if you want to change your portrait later on, you are still stuck with the race (and gender) you originally chose. So don't pick one you cant live with indefinitely.
Quote: so what do you suggest..i should choose the race but than switch to some other faction?
Sure. Why not?
I am in the process of switching to Gallente faction right now. But I'll still be flying Caldari ships, and I'll never have a fruity looking Gallente portrait.
Quote: ...so if i really which to go Minmatar..but the ships make me have doubts...than i just make a minmatar and start training some other race's frigate skill so i could fly their ships if minmatar ships don't do...
Pretty much, yeah.
If you don't care about portrait/backstory, just use an optimal template for whatever it is you want to do, and go from there. There are some template characters here: http://www.eve-guides.com/chargen/index.php
Quote: ok let's say i make a minmatar with the special forces career..and switch to let's say caldari ships...i WOULD be set behind by all the other caldari players because of the skills they start with and i don't...
Yes. How important is it for you to be a Minmatar character?
In the long run, their "advantage" will be next to nothing. Starting skills don't make that big a difference in the long run. And there is nothing they can do that you also couldn't do eventually.
Quote: now let's say i did that and crossedover right of the start...it would take me some time to even myself up with the caldari starters, time which i could've used on moving on to minmatar cruisers or more.....so is this worth it?
Yep. How important is it that you be a Minmatar?
Quote: so is it worth?
IMO, yes. But a lot of people on here will look at you like you are insane for choosing a race simply based on the portrait/background story. It depends on what you want out of the game.
If your main goal is to be really good at something as soon as possible, then do research and figure out the optimal build. Otherwise, pick what you like and start training skills in the direction you want to go.
Quote: And why on earth would i want to fly some heap'o'junk made of nuts'n'bolts thinking its cool to use ancient projectile weapons when i can have all the starworz lasorships goin pew pew and having people tell me how OP it is.
Yeah, if I was going for looks alone, Amarr do have the coolest looking ships (and weapons) in the game. Nothing beats lasers.

Then make a Minmatar character you like, and start training for whatever race of ship you want to use.

I cant make the choices for you because I don't know you. I don't know what it is you like. You'll have to research the various races and decide what you like.
In general, Caldari seem to be the choice for PvE, and Amarr for PvP. But thats extremely generalized. If you want a jack-of-all-trades race, stick with Minmatar.

I don't have any experience with them. Gallente specialize in drones, so their ships tend to have larger than normal drone bays, And some of them give bonuses to drones. A lot of PvPers use Gallente ships. They also get bonuses for Hybrid turrets and they are geared in favor of armor tanking.
I have a Gallente alt I use as scouting fodder for when my main has to venture into lowsec. They probably have the coolest looking ships after the Amarr (except for their frigates, which are all fugly).

WHY do people say it's EVE in Hard Mode....they always say it takes most skills to play Minmatar
Because we Minmatar are so ..... sophisticated.
Originally by: ISK'maker031 so what makes the Minmatar different?
The Minmatar women are beautiful and sexy. Surely you have seen the other factions'women, right?
You have to have brains to be a good Minmatar. You need higher skill points. If you are more brawn and less brain, choose one of the other three races.
Some of the others have described the reasons why. A lot of it has to do with the layout of the low and mid slots.

Are you talking about the Gallente? Those aren't women, those are men.
