I have been trying to figure out how to get the absolute highest yield I can when mining. I'm trying to take into account all the skillz and ships needed. Here is what I have come up with so far for say mining Veldspar (insert whatever you like here):
Skillz: - Astrogeology 5 - Mining Barge 5 - Exumers 5 - Leadership 5 - Mining Foreman 5 ... not really sure if Mining Director would help as i dont think it it applies any DIRECT bonuses.
Equip: - Hulk - T2 crystals for whatever your mining - Mining Upgrade
Be in the correct location in a fleet to get said fleet bonuses.
I am still very new and I am sure I have missed something so I put this out there for all to comment on. Whats missing? ...and what would the yield be PER laser? Any help would be muchly appreciated!

To even use the T2 veld crystals on your lasers, you need Veldspar Processing 4. To use T2 mining upgrades you also need Mining Upgrades 4. There are rigs you can put on your Hulk to increase yield I believe as well. There are also implants you can use to increase yield.

Obviously those are the most essential ones.
Originally by: Kratos McLeod - Leadership 5
Not needed for Mining at all, unless you're a fleet leader, but then it totally depends on how many lads and ladies you got in your gang.
Originally by: Kratos McLeod - Mining Foreman 5
The bonus does only take effect, if you're the squad/wing/fleet booster (and of course you need to be in a fleet). If you're not, you can spare yourself the training.
Originally by: Kratos McLeod ... not really sure if Mining Director would help as i dont think it it applies any DIRECT bonuses.
To get any effect at all out of Mining Director, you need to be in a fleet, need to be the squad/wing/fleet booster and logically you need some Mining Gang links. Which basically means, that this skill is only usefull if you're sitting in a command ship, Orca or Rorqual. Out of that concept it has no practical use to you at all. But if you want to go that way, you'll also need:
-Leadership I -Mining Foreman V -Mining Director I (at least, the more the merrier, so V recommanded)
The poster before me already added *Ore of Choice* Processing IV, to be able to use the T2 crystals (those are really important).
Originally by: Kratos McLeod Equip: - Hulk - T2 crystals for whatever your mining - Mining Upgrade
Given you asked for Mining Foreman and Mining Director, I assume you'll be in a fleet. I'll take it as a given, that you got a hauler with you or an Orca or both. In that case, you should be able to patch at least 2 Mining Upgrades to your Hulk, which means you also need:
-Electronics (very important to support the CPU need) -Engineering (minor but still needed for your powergrid) -Mining Upgrades IV (for the T2 Upgrades, higher skill level also helps with CPU consumption, so maybe even V - but that's argueable and depends on your fit)
To get the needed skill level, please use EFT, because I am too lazy for that atm ;P
Also it's handy to be able to use Cargo Expanders on your Hulk, even when beeing together with a hauler and/or Orca, because you never know... Or you might mine alone because your gang is at work/sick/dead/on vacation, hence:
-Mechanic I -Hull Upgrades II
As for your Rig Slots, you can use the Cargo Hold Rigs, which need:
for T1 -Mechanic III -Jury Rigging III -Astronautics Rigging I or for T2 -Asteronautics Rigging IV
I don't know if there are rigs, which influence the yield of your Strip Miners, so I'll directly suggest the often forgotten and underestimated beasts of mining, the drones and their rigs.
Drone Mining Augmentor needs: -Mechanic III -Jury Rigging III -Drones Rigging I (IV for T2 variant)
Personally I wouldn't recommend it, but it's on the list, just for consistency, the Drone Speed Augmentor. It has the same prerequesits as the Mining yield rig for drones and deals with the perhaps biggest bottleneck of mining drone usage. Their awesome and overwhelming speed, which make every snail blush.
And while we're at it, the Mining Drones: -Drones I (level 5 suggested to be able to use five mining drones) -Mining II -Mining Drone Operation I (V for T2, but you'll want to maximize that anyways, for that is the skil which does the math for the drones) -Drone Interfacing V -Drone Navigation V
On a side note, there is also the Harvester Mining Drone, which is more or less a named T1 Drone (with 30m¦ yield it's better then the T2 variant, but uses 10 instead of 5m¦ of your drone bay). Prerequesits are same as for T1 Mining Drones, though (haven't seen one of these though yet).

That aside, you'll also need Evasive Manuvering as high as possible, to keep your align times as low as possible and of course Starship Command IV and Industry V for the Exhumer skill. Also adding some speed helps with bouncing from asteroid to asteroid if the field is a bit scattered, so you might want to have Navigation and maybe even afterburner skills.
Originally by: Kratos McLeod and what would the yield be PER laser?
After all, you don't want to know, what the yield per laser is, but what your yield per Strip Miner II is and ultimately, what your yield per minute is (or you take the three minutes cycle of the strip miners as a basic).
So let's sum it up. Must haves: -Astrogeology V -Drones V -Drone Interfacing V -Drone Navigation V -Electronics (level depends on your fit) -Engineering (level depends on your fit) -Exhumers V -Hull Upgrades II -Industry V -Mechanic I -Mining V -Mining Barge V -Ming Drone Operation V -*Ore of choice* Processing IV -Starship Command IV
Nice to have and somewhat essential: -Astronautics Rigging IV -Drones Rigging IV -Evasive Manuvering V -Jury Rigging III -Mechanic III -Starship Command V
Solely if you're going to be the leader/booster of the gang: (for Orca) -Advanced Starship Command V -Industrial Command Ships V -Leadership (level depends on the size of your gang) (--eventually Wing and Fleet Command, too, but unlikely) -Mining Foreman V -Mining Director V -Science IV (for Rorqual add) -Capital Ships II -Jump Drive Operation I -Science V -Warp Drive Operation V
That's it.

To answer the rig question; There are no rigs that increases mining yield from lasers. The only mining rigs are those for drone yield.

i was wondering this my self, What is teh most yeld u can get from your strips.?
i my self have Exumers V relevent processing to V implant that gives 3% bonus to mining yield soon to be 5% alt in an Eos with relevent skills for mining bounus + mining forman mind link
now at present i get 1832.07950801 m3 to be exact.
now im wondering will i get any higher with the 2 5% implants that i know of them being the H-X and the Michi

Not directly yield-related, but if you mine in 0.0, you will want some decent active shield tanking skills for that Hulk. Electronics 5 Engineering 5 Energy Management 4 Energy Systems Operation 4 Shield Operation 4 Shield Upgrades 4 Tactical Shield Manipulation 4 Shield Compensation 4

And who's the one using links? Right: The leader/booster in his Rorqual/Orca/Command Ship. So once again: If you're not the leader/booster, no need for Mining Foreman/Director/Leadership-skills.

Edited by: Victor Maximus on 13/02/2009 02:45:29 Because the OP was only asking for what is needed to get the maximum yield possible its quite reasonable to include things like fleet bonuses and gang links.
One thing that could be added to the list if those are considered is the Mining Foreman Mind link, increasing the bonus of gang links and increasing the fleet bonus from 10% to 15% yield bonus.
Cybernetics V and Mining Director V for that one

imo using t2 crystals on anything other than bist, crok, ark, and merc are a waste. all the other roids pop so fast. a t1 crystal would pop it just as fast and you would only be damaging a real cheap crystal that you can easily replace with your own bpc's.
training for t2 crystals tho is still good as u get the refining skill to 4.
my alt which started as a hauler for my miner trained up mining foremam 5, mining director 5, warfare link specialist 5, and will be boosting in an orca. next step is cybernetics 5 for the mining foreman mindlink.
my miner and booster/hauler alt make very short work of roids.
a sieged rorqal will be slilghty better than an orca, but an orca doesnt need to seige to give ship bonuses and can travel through gates in 0.0 :)

t2 are better yield assuming you get full yield out of the cycles. In 0.0 something like hedbergite pops for me in 3-4 cycles. Last cycle gives me a fraction of the yield. Might as well been hitting it with a t1 crystal. Woulda popped in the same amount of time and I dont have to try and bring up t2 crystals to replace the one im using, just build t1's. On a rare occasion a t2 mighta prevented an extra cycle over a t1. Also I have no way of fitting a scanner either if I'm tanking the belt with my hulk.
The heaviest ores last longer and if lucky can find rocks where one rock will fill multiple cans. Well worth going for t2 yield at that point.

Fleet bonus is absolutely relevant to this thread. Even if you are a solo player if you are serious about mining at all you are going to, at the very least, have a hauling alt(on a 2nd acct). With the 2 chars going you can fleet yourself and have the nice extra yield.
Why in the hell would anyone even consider undocking a hulk without being fleeted for the bonus? Even if you can't afford 2nd acct, you can at least beg someone in local to fleet with you for the bonus!!!
Also, DRONES DRONES DRONES. Drones help. It's a fact. So you will want to have the required drone skills. IE: Drones 5, Mining Drones 5, Drone Interfacing 4-5(big boost to mining drone yield), and you will want Scout Drones 5 and and Racial Drone Spec skill at least to lvl 1 to use the T2 smalls to clear rats. (although this is not really required, you can tank hi-sec rats forever in a proper fit hulk, and T1 scouts can clear most rats in hi-sec anyway). lo-sec/0.0 is different, the rats are harder and need to be cleared, but keep in mind, most likely you won't be solo so your options for clearing rats are different.
Rigs, although no rigs give bonus to yield, there are some rigs you might really want to consider. In hi-sec you might want cargo expander rigs, in low sec/0.0 you might want tanking rigs. So, while no rigs directly effect yield, they can indirectly help by A) allowing more cycles before needing to dock/jet can, and B) allow you to tank more thereby reducing the likelihood of having to stop mining to warp away from rats in lower sec space.
As a side note: If you have a 2nd acct running with hauler alt, why not jam a mining laser in a high slot on the hauler, I always did/do this. It's like getting an extra set of drones.

Ummm why not stop the laser when it has mined the roid out? Just because it has a 180-cycle time don't mean you have to let it run the full time. ThatĘs what the survey scanners are for. I will also stop a t2 at the end of a cycle and use my drones to clean the rest up as well. So you still not making much sense.

If you are looking at "Mining Director" you need at least Level 2 since Level 1 will give no bonuses according to the skill description.

Edited by: Kratos McLeod on 18/02/2009 02:24:19 OK... First I want to thank everyone who responded to this post. I also want to call out a few people directly. Madner Kami... thank you for all the thought you put into this. There was alot of really good stuff in your post. Victor Maximus and Draco Hemigidious... you guys hit the nail on the head. This is currently what I do. I am in a retriever with 2 MSM2's, T2 crystals, 1 Mining Upgrade 1 and I have an alt that flys a fully rigged badger mark II. We fleet and get those bonuses. Also, I have the Highwall "implant" so I recieve that bonus as well. This is the direction I was trying to go with my original post.
So... I have done some extensive research and this is what I found out. Since I am trying to find out the highest yield possiable per strip, there are 5, count them 5 skills that you need. They need to be trained to 5. They are: Mining, Mining Foreman, Exumers, Mining Barge, and Astrogeology. If you train those skills to 5, Mine in a hulk and put 2 MU2's, run MSM2's with T2 crystals, and have the formention implant... you should have a yield of.....
1774.2721 yield per strip, per cycle or... 5322.8165 yield for 3 strips per cycle.
That means if your mining Veldspar... 53,228 units every 3 minuts

With just some quick EFT'ing and a orca giving bonuses (laser optimization + field enhancement) with mining foreman mindlink and obviously the required mining director skills, It puts a hulk with exhumers 5 at 2444m3per minute (so 24,440 veldspar per minute)
This includes t2 drones (obviously since EFT doesn't take travel into effect it WILL be slightly lower)
But that's pretty good, For veldspar thats basically 97760isk /per minute thus 293,280k isk per cycle, and 1.46mil per 15 minute 'cycle'
Bear in mind this isn't your orca hauling as orca can't give foreman links + warp at same time.
But compared to a bonusless (non orca) fleet your yields only 1892m3 (per minute) That's also with a squad commander who has perfect mining leadership skills (Unlikely if hes not in an orca.)
Obviously this is all a moot point if its only you and an alt, but hey I like numbers.

Edited by: Balcura on 21/02/2009 02:56:07 We run ops with an orca, hauler and 3 miners on a pretty regular basis. Orca Pilot Mining Foreman 5 Mining Director 5 Link warfare spec 5 Cybernetics 5 Industrial Command ships 5
With the cycle time module fitted it reduces cycle time by 25.875%
Hulk Pilot Mining Barges 5 Exumers 5 Cybernetics 5 Processing skills at 4 Mining 5 Astrogeo 5 Mining Drones 5 Drone interfacing 5 Drone Rigging 4
Base Strip Miner II 360m3/180 sec Base Mining Drone II 25m3/60 sec
360 * 1.75 (tech 2 crystal) * 1.25 (mining 5) * 1.25 (astrogeo 5) * 1.15 (barges 5) * 1.15 (exumers 5) * 1.05 (slot 10) * 1.05 (slot 7) * 1.09 (upgrade II) * 1.09 (upgrade II) = 1705.25 m3 / 180 sec or 1705.25 m3 per min
With the gang links running you get 1961.04 m3 / 133.425 sec or 2645.58 m3 / min
The drones add: 25 * 2.0 (drone int 5) * 1.25 (mining drones 5) * 1.1 (aug I) * 1.1 (aug I) = 75.625 m3 / min per drone or 378.125 m3 / min
TOTAL MAX YEILD = 3023.705 / min per maxed out hulk pilot
The Rorqual will out preform this setup, but it's in low sec or 0.0

aye a orca will out perform a eos, and if a orca works like a maintance bay at a pos, you can have a frieghter follow you around giving you almost unlimited storage, altho i havent tested that theroy out yet as my frieghter pilot is my orca pilot, and theres only me and my brother in my corp

The Orca gets 15% bonus to Mining Foreman Gang Links, whereas the Eos gets 15% to Information Warfare Links. The Orca gives huge bonuses to scanners and tractor beams and has a large cargo hold (90k m3 maxed out).
You can get an Eos for about 100mill, while the Orca will cost you about 5 times that.
