I always think of giant mecha when hearing Ramsan.
Now someone only needs to make a video of a Ramsan mecha fighting the evil lagmonster from outer space in the EVE megalopolis.

We will be keeping the two RamSan 400 since they are the fastest disks we can get, reaching 400,000 random I/Os per second. But their capacity is limited, only 128 GB per system.
The new RamSan 500 "only" supports 100,000 random I/Os per second but that far surpasses the fibre channel disks we are replacing. And we are replacing all of them for a 2 TB RamSan 500.
An exciting hardware dev blog coming up next week on this and more changes that are coming. |

Is this a ramsan with infiniband links meaning this is part of the infiniband upgrade or is it a fibrechannel one? |

The RamSan 5000 is an array of 10 individual RamSan 500 units. So we're 1/10 of the way there! |

I'm guessing he means Rammstein. Certainly explains the "on fire" bit, since pyrotechnics are always part of the show.
Quite different from a RamSan.

"The RamSan-5000 costs $1.5 million, but users in performance-oriented environments will find the system cost-competitive with buying large numbers of disks to achieve high IOPS"
so CCP paid about $150,000 for one RamSan-500 ? ====================

Incredibly high performance enterprise level hardware is not cheap by any means. I work at Footlocker's network command center and have access to their machine room. Just one of our half dozen IBM system-Z mainframe units cost approx. 2 million I believe, and then we have countless racks of other intel boxes, storage arrays, massive switches, you name it.
Really a feast for the eyes, if you appreciate computing hardware.

This link gives some more info on costs. Quote: Hutsell told us that the RAMSAN-500 will be available sometime in the fourth quarter. The company will still sell its 400 model which uses all DDR memory. Hutsell added that huge drop in flash memory prices in the past years have made the 500 series much more affordable than other DDR-only storage boxes. ôThis will probably be $200,000 per terabyte on the high side,ö he said.

You're surprised that the hardware needed for the biggest server in the game industry is expensive?
