Seems to be with the T3 ships, it's actually worth your while ejecting to save losing your skill points. With that in mind, many men of fortune like myself will be left with a lot pilotless ships to get back to the lootz stash.
Was wondering if maybe some kind of towing rig would be in order, so we can tow abandoned ships through warp and into the station? Because it's a real pain in the ass having to go away, come back in your capsule and sort it out.

Edited by: NightF0x on 14/02/2009 18:01:30 seems reasonable enough...just as long as you can't tow a ship with a pilot or affect a piloted ship in any way ------------------------------------

The only other way you could do it is if you have a cap ship that can scope the ship to its ship hanger, but this would relay on the ship not having anything in it cargo hold other then ammo or cap charges.
Being able to tow a ship would be useful but CCP would have to take care in its design to stop it being abused. Macrointel, the place were the nature order of the universe does not hold sway. Pirates and ore thief's are congratulated by carebears for the actions. |

^^ You can only tow a ship the same siz eor smaller then your current towing ship ? And slowing your warp to freighter warpspeed. - Dude where is my Charon? - |

I think the reduced warp speed is fair enough. But I think limiting the shio size to the size of the towing ship would limit the usefulness of the skill. Many a time, it's a group of smaller ships taking on a big one. How about a compromise of.....if the towing ship is smaller then the ship it's towing, then its align time is reduced. This can be negated by improving your towing skill.
Also, just to throw into the mix. Assuming this idea was implimented, we could have dedicated 'tug' ships. Which can perhaps fit multiple 'towing rigs' as oppose to other ships only being allowed to fix one. Other bonuses could include no penalty for aligning with ships in tow, and no warp speed penalty. In fact while I'm on one, here's some ideas for the modules and skills:
1. Standard towing rig module (Required Towing skill 1)- Can be fitted to any ship, with a limit of one per ship. 2. Tug Ship Towing rig (Required Towing skill 4)- Can only be fitted to 'Tug Ships' due to excessive power needs (much like Cov Ops module). Multiple modules can be fitted.
Towing Skill - Reduces align time on towed ships by 20% per level.
Tug Ship - 5 High slots, 2 Mid slots, 4 Low slots. 99% reduction in the use of Tow Rig Modules - can fit a maximum of 4. The ships themselves would be T2 Industrials, and would be similar in Attributes to Transport ships. Where as transport ships rely on stealth, Tugs would rely on fast align times, and the option to fit Warp Core Stabs.
Ships within the Tug fields cannot be taken out removed from it. However they CAN be targeted and destroyed. If the tug itself is destroyed, then all ships within it's field are set free to be boarded, or tugged off as well.
Finally, due to the nature of the tug field, no organic matter can be present in the ships being towed or no field can be established around them.
That's kind of all been written off the top of my head, so feel free to poke holes, adjust, etc.

Edited by: Cedric Diggory on 16/02/2009 12:14:34 Simple: Any ship can tow any ship, but the mass of the towed ship is added to your own for the purposes of acceleration etc. That way a frigate can quite happily tow a dreadnought, but it'll take it two minutes to align and would take as long as that to slow down due to it's weak engines. ---

Yeah that works for me.

The Cuckoo's Tug Ship idea seems well balanced and would be very useful

OK.. so I leave 1 unit of livestock.. or a tourist, or an exotic dancer in my hold at all times.. they're organic.. you wouldnt be able to tow my ship.

I like this idea.
Simple and useful. Make it a high or low slot module (requiring maybe 2 or 3 slots) meaning you'd need to severly gimp your setup to have it on a solo vessel.
An idea I thought of recently was Gas Mining T2 frigates since there are no specialised gas mining vessels. These would be most useful for wormhole space for mining the Fullerite gasses. One issue though would potentially be Frigate cargohold.
My solution to that was a tow cable - pulling behind it up to 5 gas cylinders around, each able to hold a thousand m3 of gas or so. The cost of adding each cylinder is slowing the frigate by 15% velocity (not stack nerfed) for a maximum slowdown of 75%.
This would make some interesting looking graphic models, and give a role back to mining frigates.
Just a free addendum to your ship tow cable idea! Towing has many uses!

Most people don't have the luxury of being about to fly every BS from different races.

Not really, especially if you are part of the gang that just commendeered the ship in the first place. Shouldn't be much problem in high sec either really. I guess like most things in the game, a certain amount of common sense is required.
