Simaril - my personal advice, wait until you can use Heavy/Sentry II's before taking on Level 4's, if you plan on using a drone boat. It might take you a while to train this up, but in the long run will offer the similar experience you are having ...

About 2-3 months ago, in Serpentis hi-sec space, I made in the neighborhood of about 1.5-2 billion running exploration combat sites. So, I guess this is a YMMV incident. Your TL:DR is really this "I'm not happy, therefore EVE is dying"
