people use *this* when they want to emphasize something and don't want to CAPITALIZE it or don't have access to things like italics or bold or even underline . Though for the last people often do _this_. Hope this Helps :)

For what it's worth: My personal preference would be to go with the 'additive' method in my graphs except for when applying to armor resistance, shield resistance, max target range attributes as there are already diminishing returns for the major...
