I feel like EVE is just a much more daunting game than most other MMOs. In addition, my experience with females and games is that they tend to poo-poo it until they get sucked in and with EVE you have to try/want to be sucked in from the beginning...

I'm reletively new as well so I can't speak to the Male/Female ratio but I have been using Evelopedia as the "wowhead" for Eve. It certainly isn't the same, mostly because Eve is so different, but you can at least look up modules, ships, and all...
