btw, my 6600gt was running at 41 degrees last check. That temperature seems fine. I really dont think its the card.

Thanks for all your replies. Glad to see I am not alone here which rules out a few ideas I had like my gfx card was on the way out or something, but its clearly not, its also 6 months old. I noticed too what one person said that it seems to happen...
