Also, did you hear any scanning sounds? He might have locked you and used some cargo and ship scanners on you to find out if you were worth attacking. Especially if the ship he was using was a griffin.

That depends. If you are using heavy missiles for your missions, and you don't have any target painters or really high missile skills then you might have had a problem blowing up his ship, because your missiles would do a fraction of their total ...
