Strange, I run 2 accounts, and with sound disabled I never ever had a crash, lockup or freeze. Only thing I noticed is if you idle in station and have no channels open you get disconnected after some timeout.

Has any of you tried this: press ctrl-alt-shift-M ingame, then unselect the two boxes in the first register, restart EvE. Solved alot of problems for me :)

I think all Faction Smarbombs are limited to 7.5km, so they aren't really an option. If you have an insane ammount of ISK however, you could have a look at the Officers Smartbombs, eg Chelm's. They do a decent damage and have 10km range.
