As you may know, we have been investigating the issue of lag in Faction Warfare for a while.
We have looked at the server side of this issue, and now we need to look at the client side. This means that we need you, the community, to help us. To get accurate information on what is going on with the client, we need information from users experiencing the issues.
The more people that help us with this, the faster and more accurately we can solve this issue. What makes it even better is that it is easy and fun to help out. This is what we need from you: We need you to run the logserver (easy), and participate in as many Faction Warfare battles as possible (fun).
Here are instructions on how to help out:
Logserver
1. Before launching EVE, go to your EVE folder, and open logserver.exe.
2. When logserver is open, either go to the file tab and select ônew workspaceö, or simply press ctrl + w.
3. Start EVE with logserver running in the background.
4. If you run into massive lag/desync/your cat catches fire*, go to the log server after the fight, select the file tab and then "save workspace" (or ctrl + s).
There you go. Now you have a file that will tell us exactly what happened to your client while you were experiencing these issues.
Extra advice: If logserver is taking up too much ram, go to the tools tab and select ôserver modeö. This will decrease the ram usage.
Sending us the logs
1. Submit a bugreport here.
2. Fill out the report as well as you can. In the description field, feel free to write which system the fight was in, and at what time. Please also include that the report should go to Mindstar or Soundwave.
3. Last but not least, click on "attach a screenshot or file" in the bottom of the page, and upload your logs. Then click "submit bug report".
4. ????
5. Profit.
Again, I cannot stress enough how important your help is to solving this issue. The logserver tells us what is happening to you, and once we know that, half the battle is won.
We can beat lag, together!
* Cats catching fire are unrelated to EVE online or any other CCP product.

Does this involve gun lag in fleet fight also? Or only when Faction warfare is around?
G
Never argue with idiots, they will just drag you down to their level, and beat you with experience. |

We're trying to work out an isolated issue related to Faction Warfare, so only that for now.

Wouldnt step 5 of sending the logs involve the problem being fixed? Which explains the profit nicely, and all that. :P Because I can. |

<snark> Fun as long as it's not laggy. </snark>
I'll be out there lagging it up until we figure this out. </stealth snark>
Seriously... I really want this fixed, and will be sure to get you some good logs.

Well, I'm sure if I was sitting in CCP's offices with brand-new high powered machines connected with super high speed link to the servers I wouldn't get any lag either.

How should this be done with the Mac client? The file "logserver.exe" exists but its not gonna run by itself, since the Mac version is just the classic PC version running in a simple emulator.
I get pretty bad lag on the Mac client. Is there any way to log that?

Do you only want players in militia's to submit reports or also outsiders fighting with / against militia's in the plexes?

Tbh CCP, you should integrate the logserver into the client and have it ALWAYS submit logs, or a button that says "Submit my log for this session" or something.

CCP Soundwave suggests that the log server might take too much ram for some people... so Im guessing that it wont be a good idea to have it ALWAYS running.

If I remember correctly, the file saved using the log-server gets rather large in a hurry if stuff is going on.
I would suggest restarting client with logserver just before x'ing up for the fleet that is likely to lag out, to minimize the filesize.
PS: Good initiative. I hope CCP does not count this as fixinf FW as there are still huge issues particularly involving NPC AI, rewards et al.

Yea, pretty much
Originally by: nasty1 Dont ccp play the game? or is it just the customer's get the lag
Yep, but the issue is kind of unpredictable, so none of our guys have had it yet We would have gotten it eventually, but this speeds up the process 10x.

Yep, if you're in large battles in low sec, experiencing the same problems, we want to know about it.

All fight where is over then 20v20 in Auga,Kourmonen,Lamaa,Ammamake,Dal etc we got horrible lag.
10-20 sec module lags or sometimes we got entering space, entering space, entering space messages many times, without emergency warp. Just nothing happen and popped many times.
Over 20v20 in FW the fights is unplayeable.
We all used no bracket settings, closed local, no sound, no effects etc.

I can't use logserver because the battles was 14-7 days ago.
But those lags started maybe three or more months ago. When the FW started we got no lags, just when we go to +100v100 battles, but now the things changed and when we go to 20v20 battles the lag is horrible allways.

Edited by: Hidden Snake on 20/02/2009 16:35:12 Btw to shortlist possible cause of the problem....alll begins in the day quantum rise was released. Before qr i was part of several fw blob to blob fights where lag was not a problem. That is one of the reasons i think qr is one of the worst addons (as it also crippled several gameplay things).

Hah! Know how many years people complained about 0.0 lag before it got significantly better? This is record speed for CCP. And from the sounds of it, you guys are currently experiencing lag on the order of what we feel right now out in 0.0 (maybe a bit worse - 20v20 shouldn't have much of any lag). Of course, I'm happy lag is getting fixed everywhere, but we in 0.0 have been used to multi-minute module lag for quite some time. Hell, last weekend, I jumped into a system and could next interact with my ship when I found myself in a pod after my clone was activated some 7 minutes later (1200+ battle). In other words - lag is not good, but this isn't out of the ordinary for most places of lagginess in Eve.

Quite a bit worse, actually. Small scale skirmishes should not produce 5 minute module lag. Suggest you look up some of the threads regarding FW lag.

(Bringing 1920x1200 down to 1280x720 still doesn't look great, but it's far more readable than the previous one.)

Well it's nice to see your looking into this,
But I'm somewhat annoyed that just a week ago after reporting one of these said fights that had the stereotypical lag and desyncing, I get told by one of your GM's that THERE WAS NO LAG!

This is the core of the issue: We cannot see it server side, if we could, it would be a lot easier to fix. This is why we need the data from the clients, to pinpoint the issue.
