We have started the process of going through everything, and without giving any specifics, I would say things are looking very good.
We may organize a big Faction Warfare fight night on Sisi that we can observe live in the near future, just to be 100% sure we have not missed anything. But right now we have logs that need to be read, and solutions to think up. Please bear with us as we are currently two weeks away from the biggest expansion in EVE history, which is obviously keeping us very busy.
Thanks Soundwave. I'm sure many of us would be up for a SiSi battle. In the meantime, the caldari PERVs have invited us to a fight for a lag solution next thursday on TQ and we will have logserver running.
Oooh, that's awesome. Could you guys post the time and place of this? We could do this instead of the Sisi battle, and I'd like to be sure we have devs watching.

This is what I did last Saturday to get you some logs. I can do this again with Minmatar, Amarr this saturday (short notice) at 20:00 EVE time (or a time you will be in the office) or sunday. Let me know before then and we will do it again while you watch (or join if if you want).

Zip the file if it is still too big then upload it to a file hosting service that is free and put a link to the download in the bug report (that's what I had to do) mine was 80mb but like 4mb zipped. Can only upload 2mb.

Yeah I can do that as well. I guess I wanted to stealth whine for CCP to provide more bandwidth themselves, by default... After all, I'm taking my time to help them fix their product... Even as I lost a Domi to lag. :P ---

I created a bug report of the 28.02.09 21:30 Tama/ Nourvukaiken gate lagfest. I hosted the logserver .zip myself as it was over 2MB. (That attachment size limit should definitely be upped IMO) ---

What's about desynch caused by bump, after a massive cap jump ? Sometimes you see you are bump or your friends are, in this case it's ok, but A LOT of times, you looks lime unbumped, but server side send you ships kilometers away from your skin in client side -> you can be desynch from 5-6km to 30-40km
This desynch is confirmed when you try to launch drone -> juste after the launch, your drones are XX km away from you
Do you need repport for that ?

I got a logserver data that is too big to submit, even compressed (about 5 megs compressed). Would hate to let it go to waste. Really bad desync recorded in it... How do I send this one?

It's not just FW or combat that causes massive lag problems but taking my PC133 P4 (1 gb ram, 512 MB nvidia 6200 et al) into Jita takes me half-an-hour to dock at station so I'd use that solar system as the basic default target for fixing...
I've had to close eve radio chat, and my other chat boxes, and the ship overview and everything else just to get the lag from perimeter into Jita down, b4 I even dock at Jita IV - moon 4 - caldari navy assembly plant!!!
So if we had a fight in Jita, it would prolly take two hours just to ctrl+click a target!!! Fix the lock-ups and other **** that stops me going into Jita too often b4 u fix anything else pls!!!
It just so happens I have to leave and return to Jita l8r 2day so I'll boot up ur logserver prog and give u a bug report thingy soon after dt 2day so stay tuned... assuming ofc, someone at ccpo reads this posting 2day... lol

I've got some ideas I'd like to pass onto u guys, if u dont mind a newbie eve player (3 mths or so) teaching u guys a thing or two...
1) ru using a PC133 ram-based PC (like mine) to test ur theories for fixing the client? I have no choice but keep this system as my gaming machine and it forms a nice test bed for my projects as windows XP pro sp3 and regularily ug via windows update and so on. This spec PC is also good for u because u maximise the availability to gamers who, like me, have a low income and will not be put off by the hi spec required of other games like Crysis and so on. But the lag and 'screen freezes' I experience all the time in eve online is a real drag for me and I am certain I have lost several ships and their cargoes as a direct result of game lag, so improving the game's spec for players like me on the minimum spec would greatly improve the player's performance in-game, esp if we also enjoy eve radio chat and chatting in game and all the other things we do in eve online... 2) can u put local chat, eve radio chat and similar hi volume chat boxes into their own protected ram sectors, like windows does with it's software? eve radio chat is one of the biggest lag problems and this is the main cause of 'freezing' for me despite my virgin broadband connexion, as it updates really frequently... 2a) same with the pilot's overview panel and other stuff that goes on within eve, eg seperate memory sectors for each of the various processes the eve client uses? 3) why can't we switch off those glorious astronomical backgrounds of nebula clouds and other extraneous background grafical details that we, the clients, don't really need once we get over the initial 'wow' factor of the glorious grafix? 3a) While initially, as a complete beginner, these nebula clouds do look spectacular, in the heat of battle they are not really essential are they? In Homeworld: cataclysm we could use a purely tactical arena, where the background was just blackness and the spare grafical memeory was used to display tactical data, such as ships and asteroid fields and lots of relevent details such as range-to-target and so on, whereas, those 'glorious' nebulas are grafix hogs and not really authentic or necessary for pure armchair generals like me and others on low spec machines, which at the end of the day, is what most of these games are about - the tactix and strategies we use to crush our enemies!!! I would rather seriously sacrifice grafic details to present a more 'pure' combat orientated view of eve than see those often very pretty backgrounds in eve, especially when I know just how much memory those pretty pictures take up in my PC133 ram space!!! while I understand eve is in direct hardcore competition with other MMO's games like WoW (argh, spit!) and the new Star Wars MMO for example, and other games like Crysis, CoD IV and so on, there is also a need to encourage low spec players like me to stay and as combat is the whole premise of eve (I build ships simply to replace the losses I have suffered, eg a 90 mil Navy Vexor as performance-based as possible and having the capability to 'strip' eve down to the barest grafical details, to help players like me, would be greatly worth the ú120 a year minimum subs I expect to pay; on top of the basic costs of being online in the first place... When I say 'strip down' these grafical details, I mean stripped down to the simplest basics like ships, drones, range-to-target etc and so on r more important than pretty screenshots's, so slash and burn guys and u'll make me a happy bunny girl!!! all the best kat@azinko

I, too, would like to know. Have you found out that it has to do with all those dropped and unordered packets? If that isn't it, are you even semi halfway close to finding the general direction you would be looking in if the client was at fault? ____________________ CCP: Catering to the cowards of a cold, harsh universe since November, 2006. |

We will be watching the big fleet battle arranged for tomorrow. After that, I will take down the threads, and unless we need more help from the community, do whatever need to be done internally to fix this.

Don't take this thread down buddy, as it looks like a useful background blog for the issues of lag and stuff we face and (modestly), my comments would be useful too for other ppl like me playing eve on low spec machines!!! don't u have archival space? kat@azinko

Few minutes ago I got shot down in Old Man Star without being able to do but watch a slideshow. The FPS counter said 58 frames per second despite the dozens of ships but all was stalled.
The logs? The log server crashed

More and more corps and players are leaving the FW theatre. Can you give us an ETA please. Would like to know if its worth to stay in FW and endure the lag for a short amount of time any longer.

Any ETA on how the work is progressing? Based on the earlier comments it seems faction warfare was going to be looked at first, then hopefully null-sec battles.

Just a thought on overall lag. In case off heavy lag would it be possible to make a info-cue where info from the server that is more essential than other info will be send first.
I mean the cosmetic stuff is nice but not as important as the info about me being warp-scrambled. I rather have graphic glitches in intense combat then not being able to dock when im in a pod.

Lost this ship in a gate fight in Auga system on the Amamake gate. Was preloaded and had the ability to move and target. I selected the primary target for our group and ordered the engagement and the game immediately froze. Not lagged, not slow - just a screen freeze. Other people in our gang reported the same on ventrillo.
2mins later I woke up in Kamela in a new clone having lost the ship and clone with absolutely no way to do anything.
This was a 45 man fight that completely stopped the client functioning.
This is pretty unacceptable lag for such a small scale of engagement.
I've petitioned the ship loss so you should be able to use that as reference for lag tracing.

Its been over 6 months since these issues were pointed out to CCP that whatever "upgrades" to the game play that Quantum Rise brought to us failed to work for Low sec battles.
The fleet that has the grid loaded first seems to always come out on top in respect to having less lag and desync, but even that isnt always right.
Many ideas were passed onto CCP by Faction war players like having one system for each faction permanently on a reinforced node etc but it never got a reply.
The final answer seems to be that Empire ( apart from Jita ) and Low-sec = low priority.

So 3 months later after CCP Soundwave's last post and still no fix or update to the lag issues in FW.
Come on CCP.... please fix as lag/desync's in FW fleet battles makes the game unplayable. |
