Anyone who doesn't honor ransoms is an idiot and hurts the "industry" of making isk off of ransoms....

Got shot often enough by pirates, but never had someone ask ransom. If they would ask ransom however, i wouldn't even consider paying. Result will probably be that i lose the isk i sent, i lose my ship, and we got another topic on C&P where someone needs to e-peen how he got isk from me and then destroyed me. No thanks.
Once wanted to ransom pod of pirate who warped out too slow, but his corp mate warped in, so i just podded him. If i would ask, i would honour it, but i never really got a reason to ask it. ---------------------------------------------

Do I personally know you?
Since I don't know you I have no way of knowing if you're going to let me go. I have to assume you won't since ransom and kill is more profitable. There's no down side to not honoring a ransom. You're going to sacre off customers? Pirating them means they aren't going to come back. First timers have never heard of you so we're back at square one.
Plus paying just doesn't make sense. If I get popped I loose. If I pay a ransom I loose. If I get popped the pirate gets a little. If I pay the pirate gets a lot. Either way I'm ******* so I might as well take the option which gives the pirate the least.
It's risky and it helps the pirate. Paying ransom is the worst possible thing you can do.

We need like a channel full of reputable middlemen for ransoms, but that said I have used Chribba in the past when I ransomed a Wyvern..
Only problem is he's not always online ;O

Um, probably due to ransoms being too high.
You can't expect to be paid more than a player's potential loss. Nor even the amount of that loss, due to risk of dishonoring agreement. Nor the discounted price, because of COV (cost of variance (psychological cost of dishonoring agreement)).
I guess something to consider too is that your ship isn't full value in that system because of its security... basically since you can get blown up before you can get back to highsec, it may be best to just blow up immediately if the ransom is too high. Like, if there's 50% chance this ship will get blown up by someone else even if you let me go, and you ask me for 60% of the expected loss, then overall I'll still show a loss even though you're leaving me with a 40% edge in this initial deal. So if you're in the miiddle of high sec you should probably ask for less ransom than if you're on the edge of highsec.
In summary, be a smart pirate. :)

Shipment to Chribba ASAP:
43 tons of coffee beans 27 tons of caffeine stimulants 14 tons of coke (the drinkable kind) 14 tons of ... wait, don't say it. 1 loud stereo
... that should keep him going for a while at least

question - how would a third party know if you upheld the deal to not pod?
like, what's the point of a random escrot, when you can just like to the person that you were podded pirate says no podding took place... then what?

Yes. Although I accidentally popped a destroyer after a ransom once back when I was a newb. The victim didn't have money so I asked him to jettison his cargo. I Didn't pay enough attention and missed him dropping the can, but I convoed him for this and gave him iskies for a new ship. ___

I've never actually had anyone take me up on an offer of a ransom... so the situation's never really come up for me. Guess it would depend on if they were a **** or not.

Me (and my corp/alliance) ALWAYS honor ransoms.
Note: ransoms we do not offer (i.e. someone just sends us ISK without us asking) does not count as a valid "ransom" as far as I'm concerned.

I always honour ransoms, but sometimes, and this has happened a few times, a fleet mate pops the victim, i give them the ransom back and they can take the loot. Hell sometimes i will even turn around and shoot who ever poped the victim. --------------==============================-------------- Forgiveness is between you and god, im just here to arrange the meeting.

I don't ask for ransom. But if I get offered one, I take it, but I don't honour it. I got 450m ransom for an archon last week, that was quite unfortunate for the guy, partly I did it to stall him from self-destructing too. At least the honest thing about me is that it says on my bio that I don't honour it so don't offer me any :)

Pretty interesting so far. I initially thought that it'd be a case of most people honouring ransoms and only some not doing it and ruining it for others, but it seems to be almost a 50/50 split.
51% - Always 44% - Never 4% - Most of the time

This is exactly what I meant by pilots refusing to pay because they think they'll be destroyed anyway. It seems that a lot of the pirates that ransom and then destroy the victim are the ones that aren't in need of ISK. But unfortunately for those of us that use ransoming as our main source of income, it pretty much cuts a pretty big chunk out of out potential income. ---------------------------

Then you get griefed by a greater griefer, simply put. I'm not dishonouring ransoms myself (not offering them either, but I'd honour it if in in very unlikely case I decided to take on an offer), but I don't see any reason for pirates who doesn't honour ransoms to start do it.
They're not ruining their own market/business. They ruin that market for others. Probably just for a laugh. So if they find out they are ruining the day for other pirates as well, they'll probably just laugh even more.
