Mine would be in this order by memory of playing them.
1. Megatraveller 2 (was awsome at the time but not so good when i tried it few months ago converted for modern PC¦s
2. Hero¦s Quest
3. Final Fantasy series (has to have its own place imo)
4. Baldur Gate¦s series
5. Oh so many Nintendo and Sega RPG you wouldnt believ it
I have little clue what would be the "best" RPG today for they just seem to loose its touch after few hours of playing, seems to be spent to much time on graphics and to little time on actual fun and playability for PC RPG.
It might be because just most of the "smaller" RPG from Asia arent translated to English nor converted to PC¦s.
So one extra question, what do you think stands out in modern RPG¦s for PC¦s today ? Spawn of the Devil

1. Morrowind
2-422 The rest.
Morrowind with the pletora or mods and player-created stuff thru using the TES construction kit is THE single most awesome rpg ever.
Only bad thing is that the standard game without mods is much to easy with the ability to create enchanted items that turn the game into godmode. _______________________________________________

Does Championship Manager count?
Because I *was* the manager and during my *decades* at the helm of mighty Sheffield Wednesday I watched some of my youth trainees become stars and retire. I was the grand old man.
That's about my RPG experience prior to EVE

Captain Blood I have to try, never heard of it even but the others, morrowind and NWN are hack and slash imo and Deus ex is FPS with RPG elements, best fkn FPS I have tried but I dont consider it a real RPG but I waited and tried Deus Ex 2 and it aint as good imo.
Perhaps I am a bit old school RPG fan and dont accept games as RPG if they dont capture you in the story, that seems to be lacking in way to many so called RPG¦s today, even many Star Wars games like KOTOR and even Jedi Academy can be called RPG for they have that bit of a story and leveling but for me its just some extra flavor on the hack and slash and shooting.
Mayby its just me getting old and not keeping up with the changes Spawn of the Devil

Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 1-7, Ogre Battle, ( ) Secret of Mana 1+2, Various other SNES games (cant think of them all)
For PC Baldur's Gate, although none really had the charm of old SNES games.

Morrowind was nice, but it is too much of a hack'n'slash. I mean you can get lvl 65+ in 1-2 days. --

I cant say it enought:
Fallout 1 Fallout 2
Imo its the best RPG games out there, old yes but still the best game ive ever played. You have total choice of what to do but you are still attached to the story, and the game is hilarious.
Seriously Omni, if you havent yet, try it out. ------------------------------------------------

The great thing about these 'best RPG' topics is that you can tell exactly who's played Planescape: Torment. Quite simply, those that have place it at their number 1 spot.
It is the best RPG that may ever be made.
Fallout 1 & 2 were also good, and of course NWN. ------------

Planescape: Torment
Definetly the best RPG I've ever played I even went through it about 5 times to make sure I'd done everything... who'd ever have thought you were facing... I'll leave it at that for those who might want to go buy the game for all of about 2 quid nowadays... graphics are dated but best storyline I've ever read. -----------
