Eve players are in average 25-30 years old and usually have an above average education (this was meantioned somewhere by CCP, can't find the source). That are people in their creative years, that otherwise could use their time to work on real life problems, invent new technology, solve environmental problems or be of good use to the society in many other ways.
Instead 30-40 thousand of them are sitting in front of their PC at any given time, wasting their creativity for fighting imaginary wars with non-existant ships. That's a daily waste of around 700.000 manhours. People are lured into a useless activity by CCP with their awesome computergame. Isn't this just a big waste of potential caused by CCP, a true damage for the world society ?

It's free time, we'd either use it to **** of our respective missuses or try out the wear/tear features of the couch so it being usedon EVE has zero effect on society.
You don't expect a scientist to use his free time to invent a reliable source of free energy do you? No, it's work hours.
We work, then we have fun with EVE.

Besides, I am quite able to do my programming while EVE is running in the background.

The assumption here is that they would be doing something "useful" if they weren't playing EvE. 95% of them would probably just be playing another game.
In short: no.

This is an interesting aspect. Since in Eve there are plenty of people with vicious intention towards their fellow players (think of all that scammers, griefer, powerabusers etc.), one could say CCP does something usefull by absorbing the time of (potential) criminals and offering them a place to live out their criminal energy without inflicting real harm to the society. So maybe this even balances the damage ...

Yhatsee said that eve is a second job you have to pay for; i agree in part, but for me, eve is a job where i can have a positive effect on my 'workmates' and where there is a proper sence of community (at least, in corp)

The "world society" has two options. Let me decide what I do with my free time or decide it for me and make me actively resist it. Trying to excert too much control over individuals would be much more destructive to the society, than letting people "waste their time" once in a while.
I don't consider it a waste of time, since it serves an important function(s) for me. I don't really care how others see it. If we start deciding these things on some generic standard, most luxuries in life would propably be removed as un-necessary and wasteful.

The assumption here is that goons are damaging to society. Is that a good assumption?

I'd say if said students were playing a game when they should be studying or otherwise engaging in activities beneficial to the reason they are in school then maybe they will never have the focus and self discipline to do anything past monkey work in a cubicle anyways? So let 'em be the mules and cannon fodder to attain the dedicated players goals in this game as they will be lackeys and paper shufflers in a real life corp regardless.

Indeed the OP is right.
I am thinking the same for a while now. Normally I engaged in 10s of projects, from programming simulations to making a reactable table etc. Even my work would interest me (a bit).
Nowadays, my Lego Mindstorms project stopped after a week, never took the time to connect c# to Number 5. My simulations aren't touched for at least 2 years and my work is on automatic pilot. ----------------- Destiny is not a matter of chance. It is a matter of choice. It's not a thing to be waited for - it is a thing to be achieved. |

[note to self] Must quit Eve and play a less intelligent game like WOW instead to avoid damaging society [/note to self]

..that gives you free reign to do anything you want and act anyway you like in a sandbox enviroment with only your personal choices and morals restricting you.
Now since this disscussion is about the effects eve has on real life society as it applys to students I think the op is very much on to something.

I recommend the OP read "This Gaming Life" by Rossignol. He talks about the benefits of gaming and why it is a good form of learning and recreation. He specifically speaks of how gaming led him to a useful and productive career.

Ok then, I take your point.
Oh crap, so many hours I have wasted on this game, I will head outside and make my hours of waste go toward something constructive.
I'll get the boat out and go fishing now, and put in a bit of offroad aggression while I am at it too.
I forgot about my constructive activities in this world because of this game.

Well i agree that the vast majority have a higher than average IQ.
But i don't think everyone sits around at home all day playing this game, alot of people either work from home or like myself take a laptop to work and play on it there; i've gotten quite a few of my students into this game and compared to other MMO's it is very complex and the player driven enviroment always create's new things and problems to solve so it never really gets boring.
