Because a lot more in EVE changes than in "other MMOs".
To keep the game current, and constantly updated - they must have a short downtime every day.
Also - CCP's Fridge only has enough space for one days worth of beer, so every day they must have a short downtime just before lunch to restock.
Simple really.

I'm sure that CCP would rather have no down time at all, but unfortunately they're a neccessary evil.

So you mean alliances have to wait 1 week just to be able to set up a station or to get Sov or anything like that?.
Mmmmm yeah, great idea .

also, let's not respawn belts, plexes, or clear caches for a week either. that will really hurt those isk making carebears.

No. Unless you want to remove sovereignty, asteroid belts, complexes, outposts, and unless you want make the game unplayable five days a week due to lag.
Originally by: CCP John Proctor I think I can aswer this question as I am usually the one doing the down times
EVE is a rather large game running on a large server cluster comprising of 2 "farms" You have your proxy servers that you directly connect to, then you have your sol servers where your session is directed too and where all your interactions are carried out at (flying around in space etc...)
We have server processes that run as services on these boxes and are constnatly generating logs and consuming resources on the box, and restarting these services clears there memory and allows us to save there generated logs.
Normally our down times in the past were 20 minutes with Tuesdays and Thursdays reserved for maintiance. But with a larger customer base the needs for maintiance has grown and we have 1 hour downtimes now Monday through Friday and stay with the normal 20 minute downtimes during the weekend.
Now why does maintiance need 1 hour you ask? For 20 minutes of every downtime we have downtime jobs that run. These jobs do everything from reseeding asteriods (there are millions of them) too cleaning up space by deleting corpses (I shed a tear everytime a corpse gets deleted ) to clearing out old logs, deploying outposts, and conducting statistical gathering...
While the server crunches the numbers we do not conduct any normal maintiance as we dont want to lock tables and interfere with the normal downtime jobs so our maintiance must occur outside of this 20 minute window.
Maintiance that needs to be done includes defragmenting the index's that we have on our database... (with over 150 million transactions per day that leads to quite a bit of logical fragmentation) We also delete junkyards on a constant basis... We have designed EvE so that when you get your ship blown up or you refine your ore or you delete an item in your hanger those items are not deleted but instead moved to a junkyard, in this way it allows our Customer Support staff to easily give your items back or allows us to see if something abnormal is happening.
But we need to manually delete junkyards that are more then a month old, with over 30 thousand people constantly logged in every day, with over 100 thousand unique users logged in every day those are a lot of items that are created and deleted every day that accumulate over time.
This is only a tip of the ice berg if what we do during these downtimes but we are trying to create ways to eliminate these and have maintiance done dynamicly as needed automaticly by the system.
In the words of our Cheif Operating Officer here at CCP "I want no downtimes... make it happen!"

Eventually OP, much of the stuff that is done during DT is on the docket to get removed (seeding belts for instance) and much of what has been done recently has reducing the need for a full hour (last week the day after the new hardware went in, DT was only what... 20 minutes if that)
So really, its something they already know about and have been working on and continue to work on. |

Every day, somewhere in eve, asteroids get reset at downtime. as for downtime being at 9pm, oh well that is the nature of things. At least it is only a 1 hour downtime.

the eve server cluster is unique among MMO's. the downtime is neccisary. if you dont comprehend why, accept from us that it is.
in the meantime, if you cant find something to do during DT, you need to get a life.
my downtime comes from 9:30-10:30. i take a munch, iron my clothes for work tomorrow if needed, play with the cat, read a book etc.
gives my eyes a break as well.

there are several reasons, and some not known for why they have daily down time. to change that schedule would require a lot of code change and honestly, a platform change.
outposts and other mechanics ppl use as a reason can be worked around. outposts only at downtime? do we need a downtime to online a pos? just code an anchoring sequence respawn belts? can be done on a schedule instead of downtime. (but the move to exploration belts would fix this)
part of the reason for daily reboots is the OS platform they chose to run on. Windows has its stability issues and memory leaks. as well as requiring a reboot for most changes. Linux would be a more stable and resilient platform, but again require a major code change.
having a fixed daily down time can be annoying to those that happen to fall right in the middle of that schedule, but these are the prices we pay for a single massive shard and such a massive game. I don't recommend any of these changes as there are plenty of other bugs and issues that need to be dealt with.

Are you actually comparing Windows 2008HPC vs LinuxHPC or just repeating the comments of WindowsXP vs desktop Linux from 2003?

Indeed.
The company I work for deals with a lot of HPC based stuff (Some of it being MMO tech based ironically). Both Windows-HPC and Linux-HPC based distros are very very stable.
Claiming that Windows-HPC has "stability issues and memory leaks" is hilarious
With some of the simulations we were benchmarking recently (Black-hole collisions if anyone cares), Windows would often out benchmark the Linux variant in the initial runs. Heck, I'd go as far as to say Windows-HPC is easier to optimise than most Linux ditros we use in this field, and thats coming from a guy who doesn't run Windows on his home machine and compiles everything from source, because I have a small e-peen.

Actualy, I am comparing this from experience. As an MCSE, an RHCE, and a CCNA, and several posts on the Linux-HA mailing list and someone who has had expensive experience in the HA and Cluster environments. I am not saying winodws doesnt have its strong points and should be done away with. What I am saying is, some of the arguments that they say they have to work around, have been dealt with on multiple levels and on much more powerful platforms.
I am sure that there are more than code and admin reasons for the choices they made and this is why I said that I dont recomend changing the platform...especialy now that it has been running for 5+ years.... They COULD be running DB2, or Oracle RAC for their DB cluster and be getting much better performance and be able to run a lot of these jobs in the background, but then we would probably be paying closer to 60 bucks a month just for the licensing fee's alone. The hardware they run is probably the best bang for the buck and theres probably a lot of other ways they could be doing it better, but they arent a multinational Corp that has billions to blow on "retention payments" either. I just made an observation of the situation. I do commend CCP for the stable game they provide, under the budget they have and look forward to the future of the game.

To dumb down what everyone is saying here...Just like your pc need the occassional reboot to be able to run decently nonstop so does theirs.
The server( not including patches and DT) has an uptime of 99.999999yougetthepoint%.
Sarcasm= CCP could just skips DT and make their jobs easier and let the servers crash every day and the belts run dry and the systems get cluttered with junk etc..... But they rather make your life hard, by not letting you play 1 hour every day./sarcasm
