If you're a Russian or Japanese speaker, then this is the blog for you!
We recently deployed our Russian and Japanese localized clients, and we need help testing them out before Apocrypha launches. CCP Caedmon's newest blog, "Machine Translation's Bad, M'kay?" has all the details you need to know.

Just to clear things up: if a Russian player enters his player/corp/ally name in Kyrillic letters an English client does see the name in Latin letters? Same for the Kanji/Hiragana/Katakana signs? Calling primaries in fleet battles would be quite fun otherwise

Your intention to provide a localized russian client is good and welcome.
But what we can see now on singularity is something other than russian client. It displays russian letters, it even displays russian words sometimes, but it is not the localized russian client.
You ask to make screenshots and report translation bugs? But one will be really hard-pressed to provide you a screenshot from the russian client that does not contain some translation error or style error. Should we make a screenshot of every window and every text in the game and send it to you?
Below is one example of the really bad case. I think it will become the canonical example of the low quality of the russian translation.
The original Maelstrom description: === With the Maelstrom, versatility is the name of the game. Its defensive capabilities make it ideally suited for small raid groups or solo work, while its 8 turret hardpoints present opportunities for untold carnage on the fleet battlefield. ===
And now lets see the garbage displayed instead of the Maelstrom description in the russian client on sisi: === Что касается Maelstrom, все еще может измениться. Его оборонительные возможности идеально подходят для налетов маленьких групп или одиночных набегов, в то время как 8 подземных контрольных пунктов пушек отлично подходят для осуществления тайных массовых уничтожений флота на поле боя. ===
Well, lets translate it back in english, saving the form and the style: === Regarding the Maelstrom, everything can still change. Its defensive capabilities are ideally fit for raids by small groups or solo forays, while its 8 underground weapon control points are ideally suited for covert mass annihilation of fleet on the battlefield. ===
underground weapon control points, WTF? covert mass annihilation, WTF?
If it is not a machine translation, then it is either a translation by someone who has not seen EVE at all or a translation by someone who does not know russian at all. Or both has not seen or played EVE and does not know russian. The meaning is lost and the actual language is twisted and feels non-russian.
Another example is the screenshot from the blog itself - the font is awful and it does not match the width and style of the english font. The usage of upper-case letters in inappropriate places does not count as a positive feature too.
I know that there is a dedicated team of russian betatesters who tries to help you with the translation even now, and I hope they will be able to find as much errors as possible and I hope you will listen to them. But I do not believe you can make it before expansion. And nobody in the russian community believes it.
We will have to deal with this so-called localization somehow, mostly by sticking with the english client. But there will be new players who will most likely start the game using this pseudo-russian client. Lets all hope they will not leave the game due to the fact that they do not understand anything and nobody understands their questions.

Don't worry, many NPC corps have a russian speaker or two to guide newcomers and if they don't, the rest of us can provide a link to the russian language channel. That should suffice until someone helps to translate the current pseudo-russian client.

I'd love to see community driven language translations. It has worked wonders for facebook, it has always worked for linux distro translations. There is no better translator than the collective speakers of a certain language who are also eve players.
I can of course understand how building sentences with dynamic data can result into strange situation where the grammar and word order of a specific language does not correspond to the specific patterns that the code uses.
A way around this would be to use placeholder tokens, the usage of which will be dictated by the default english file.
{ENEMY_ENTITY}'s {ENEMY_WEAPON} hits you for {HIT_POINTS}.
Create a web system where groups of users can be created and work collectively and coordinated in the translation of the string literals, with wiki style editing notes per string so the group members can discuss about the most accurate effective translation on tough to translate strings. Provide an automatic syntax parser to check wether the strings are uniform and do not contain errors (like unterminated { } brackets) and then compile the language files into sisi once a week or once a month.
In very little time you will end up with a bucketload of new languages. You can also include a disclaimer regarding the community generated translations and add specific language typo reports in the petition system, in order to cope with potential malicious translations.

Edited by: Eugene Roserie on 04/03/2009 04:07:44 Current Japanese localization is very poor and confusing. So many words are not translation, just only pronunciation written in katakana letters. Only who knows original English words can understand its meaning. That can't be called "translation" nor "localization".
For example, Attributes' name. "パーセプション" is not a japanese counterpart of the word "Perception". It just describes how pronunciate "Perception". It should be changed to "知覚" or other words. There are hundreds of words that need to be correct.
Yes, I understand how difficult English-to-Japanese translation is, because I was one of such professional translator. As a Japanese, I enjoy playing EVE very much and am excited when Japanese localization came to public beta, but this is too lousy.
Japanese localization seems to need much work of hired professional checker before asking for Japanese speakers feedback.

How much i like these localizations, would it at least be an idea, now with the russian and japanese letters in place to have the ded pos mails translated back to english or at least to everyones localized client, because i for one can't read a single character of japanese, so if i'd see a ded msg from someone using a japanese or russian client, i wouldn't have a clue where this pos has been planted.
At least with the german version i'm able to understand it, with me being dutch, but it's still annoying to see those msg's in german when i'm using a english client.

Hi!
The bad thing about russian is that when you make it like in example in dev blog - it's bad. It really annoys people, so they better use English version. I'm a web developer with quite some time experience and I have to say my last projects get use of gettext localisation platform, where you easily can make any type of plural forms. I make russian and other language translation quite successful - it's easy for programmer, because it's just the same line of code:
sprintf("%i %s, ngexttext("days", number), number);
1 день 2 дня 5 дней
So now you get correct Russian translation for that depending on the number. Anyway, you could write your own function, it's very easy, just 6-7 lines of formatted code to determine what form you should use.

QFT. Well said Eugene.
While I agree with Eugene, after using Japanese client for a while, I also have to admit even it needs more tune-ups, for many Japanese native speakers, probably this is a good start point especially for the people who never know what EVE looks like. It is much easier for the majority of Japanese people to read (inappropriate) Japanese words instead of struggling reading English. Even though the translation is not correct, the probability of misunderstanding English is much higher than making mistakes due to incorrect Japanese words. That's my impression from this Japanese Client.
Keep good work CCP and don't stop going forward. But don't say this is gonna be a Beta. This doesn't reach not even Alpha level.

I actually hate localization. If you can't deal with the fact that EVE speaks english, maybe you should go to World of Warcraft - Blizzard has been so desperate with translations that they even managed to translate names! Names are NEVER, under NO CIRCUMSTANCES to be translated. If you do, you can as well go shoot yourself in the head - the game dies when you do that.
Now what I want (and I wish that other players think that way too) is an option to change the language without even logging in. Because EVE has that extremely annoying habit of reverting itself to my system's language with every patch. I am german, but that doesn't mean that I play games in german! NONE of my games are installed in german language, and I wish that CCP accepts that fact and offers a solution to that.

I actually agree with your point.
I wrote a whole post on this but deleted it because it was starting to sound racist, which i'm not. I enjoy meeting people from different countries in game - localisation has the chance to limit this by herding people who all speak the same language together, isolating them from other players. __________________

I find it sad that CCP waste time translating the game.
We dont need russians or japaneese in the game if they cant communicate with the rest of the player base. And if the russians can speak english, they surely dont need a russian client.
And PLEASE could we have all eve-mails in english. I'm tired of getting german alliance mails about towers placed in our systems. Are they gonna be russian mails as well now, so when the russians invade our systems, we wont even be able to figure out where they put up posses?

No, English is not my native language. No, in my country we don't have 6 years of compulsory english at school. Localization is for games with separate, localized servers, not for a game that lists among its unique characteristics "everybody on a single server".

So, are you guys saying that anyone who doesn't speak English should not be allowed to play EVE?
'Cause not being able to understand in-game descriptions is a significant handicap to a new player. And there's only so much patience out there even with the most helpful of individuals.
Additionally, the willingness of any one player to communicate with the others has absolutely nothing to do with the quality and completeness of any localization. I hope this doesn't need explaining. ...

You have a point, TenjinRaijin.
The problem is, as other people have already said, bad localization might cause a babel between new players and old players
Anyway, now error messages show up in Japanese, that's a good thing. There are people who won't read popup messages written in a foreign language. And they say "Oh, a strange error appears and things won't proceed. What should I do?" while the message says clearly what they should do.
Japanese mission descriptions look like good, as far as I heard. They seem to appreciate localized backstory information rather than the Japanized UI (for now).

Wish it were so, but some posts above this unfortunately outline how localization leaks badly into the game. As far as the game client says stuff in russian or japanese to its user it's all fine for me. That is more money for CCP, so ultimately more money to improve the game. All fine.
But we are in an MMO, and localization leaks to other users, whether they like it or not. Receiving corp messages written in russian, or local being spammed with japanese characters is not acceptable on non-localized servers. If this were fixed I wouldn't have any objection.

Thanks for your comments on the Russian font. We realise it¦s not good enough and we¦re going to fix it soon.
There is a place in EVE for people who don¦t speak English. There are active alliances that speak Japanese, Russian and many other languages. I don¦t like the thought of pilots in these alliances not being able to recruit friends because the game is only available in English. Having the game in your own language is a great help, especially when you consider the steep learning curve in EVE. Once people have got to grips with the basics I would hope they will branch out into all aspects of New Eden life, interacting with folks from all language communities. But just like there are people who have fun just running missions or solo mining there will be people who play EVE solely within their own language community and that¦s fine. It doesn't stop you guys shooting them in the face, after all
Once Apocrypha is released we are going to sit down and look at how the mail system works in a multi-lingual environment. We realise it¦s not ideal as it is.
Thanks for the feedback on specific examples of bad translation. It would be great if all of you that had the time could report these through our bug reporting system.
As for future localizations, I wouldn¦t hold my breath for Dutch, Austrian or Bavarian versions. There may well be a turn in the Romance direction on the horizon though.

While it's true that the mission texts are harder to read than the UI, they're still something you only read once. The UI on the other hand, is used every day and as such it make more sense to ensure that the translation looks good.
Obviously people who have used the english client for a long time might see this differently, as they're already used to the english UI. Yet that's not necessarily the same for those who use the client for the first time.

I don't understand how can you request a font similar to the one used in "english". The font used in the Eve client, is one of the worst fonts in history. Who cares if it looks "pretty", can you tell if the system name has a 0 or a O? Can you tell I from l? 8 from B?, D from O?
Everyday i play this game, i have to suffer from telling which letter is which, often having to try searching multiple variations, taxing resources trying to overcome this accessibility limitation.
