If you're a Russian or Japanese speaker, then this is the blog for you!
We recently deployed our Russian and Japanese localized clients, and we need help testing them out before Apocrypha launches. CCP Caedmon's newest blog, "Machine Translation's Bad, M'kay?" has all the details you need to know.

In the literary world, it's called the Introduction anyway. And writing experts will get kinda harsh on you when you give the introduction last like that.

Do you plan to replace the current Russian font with something that better corresponds (style and size -wise) to EVE's default English language font? ...

Just to clear things up: if a Russian player enters his player/corp/ally name in Kyrillic letters an English client does see the name in Latin letters? Same for the Kanji/Hiragana/Katakana signs? Calling primaries in fleet battles would be quite fun otherwise

Wrong, TL;DR means too long; didn't read, so let me give you a summary of what I just said in one funnily phrased sentence. Summaries go after the main text. Don't pretend to be a writing expert if you aren't. -- Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? |

Agree, I and the gaming dutchies I know tend to go to great lengths to get the occasional dutch installed game back to english. EA is especially prone to go native on installs.

Your intention to provide a localized russian client is good and welcome.
But what we can see now on singularity is something other than russian client. It displays russian letters, it even displays russian words sometimes, but it is not the localized russian client.
You ask to make screenshots and report translation bugs? But one will be really hard-pressed to provide you a screenshot from the russian client that does not contain some translation error or style error. Should we make a screenshot of every window and every text in the game and send it to you?
Below is one example of the really bad case. I think it will become the canonical example of the low quality of the russian translation.
The original Maelstrom description: === With the Maelstrom, versatility is the name of the game. Its defensive capabilities make it ideally suited for small raid groups or solo work, while its 8 turret hardpoints present opportunities for untold carnage on the fleet battlefield. ===
And now lets see the garbage displayed instead of the Maelstrom description in the russian client on sisi: === Что касается Maelstrom, все еще может измениться. Его оборонительные возможности идеально подходят для налетов маленьких групп или одиночных набегов, в то время как 8 подземных контрольных пунктов пушек отлично подходят для осуществления тайных массовых уничтожений флота на поле боя. ===
Well, lets translate it back in english, saving the form and the style: === Regarding the Maelstrom, everything can still change. Its defensive capabilities are ideally fit for raids by small groups or solo forays, while its 8 underground weapon control points are ideally suited for covert mass annihilation of fleet on the battlefield. ===
underground weapon control points, WTF? covert mass annihilation, WTF?
If it is not a machine translation, then it is either a translation by someone who has not seen EVE at all or a translation by someone who does not know russian at all. Or both has not seen or played EVE and does not know russian. The meaning is lost and the actual language is twisted and feels non-russian.
Another example is the screenshot from the blog itself - the font is awful and it does not match the width and style of the english font. The usage of upper-case letters in inappropriate places does not count as a positive feature too.
I know that there is a dedicated team of russian betatesters who tries to help you with the translation even now, and I hope they will be able to find as much errors as possible and I hope you will listen to them. But I do not believe you can make it before expansion. And nobody in the russian community believes it.
We will have to deal with this so-called localization somehow, mostly by sticking with the english client. But there will be new players who will most likely start the game using this pseudo-russian client. Lets all hope they will not leave the game due to the fact that they do not understand anything and nobody understands their questions.

Don't worry, many NPC corps have a russian speaker or two to guide newcomers and if they don't, the rest of us can provide a link to the russian language channel. That should suffice until someone helps to translate the current pseudo-russian client.

I'd love to see community driven language translations. It has worked wonders for facebook, it has always worked for linux distro translations. There is no better translator than the collective speakers of a certain language who are also eve players.
I can of course understand how building sentences with dynamic data can result into strange situation where the grammar and word order of a specific language does not correspond to the specific patterns that the code uses.
A way around this would be to use placeholder tokens, the usage of which will be dictated by the default english file.
{ENEMY_ENTITY}'s {ENEMY_WEAPON} hits you for {HIT_POINTS}.
Create a web system where groups of users can be created and work collectively and coordinated in the translation of the string literals, with wiki style editing notes per string so the group members can discuss about the most accurate effective translation on tough to translate strings. Provide an automatic syntax parser to check wether the strings are uniform and do not contain errors (like unterminated { } brackets) and then compile the language files into sisi once a week or once a month.
In very little time you will end up with a bucketload of new languages. You can also include a disclaimer regarding the community generated translations and add specific language typo reports in the petition system, in order to cope with potential malicious translations.

Edited by: Eugene Roserie on 04/03/2009 04:07:44 Current Japanese localization is very poor and confusing. So many words are not translation, just only pronunciation written in katakana letters. Only who knows original English words can understand its meaning. That can't be called "translation" nor "localization".
For example, Attributes' name. "パーセプション" is not a japanese counterpart of the word "Perception". It just describes how pronunciate "Perception". It should be changed to "知覚" or other words. There are hundreds of words that need to be correct.
Yes, I understand how difficult English-to-Japanese translation is, because I was one of such professional translator. As a Japanese, I enjoy playing EVE very much and am excited when Japanese localization came to public beta, but this is too lousy.
Japanese localization seems to need much work of hired professional checker before asking for Japanese speakers feedback.
