Edited by: Dracoknight on 05/03/2009 10:52:51 I am a little interested of this skill, for what i have heard it add 20% to whatever mod you overheat. But how fast does the heat damage leech the life out of your mods?
Getting Engineering V today, so since i am so close to this skill i thought i might aswell train into it to test it, so what do i need to have in mind when i use this skill ?
Edit: also known as "overload" i think

Need Energy Management 5 too. Heat spreads along slots, so if you overheat 1 module it will take a while (iirc), but overheating them all and they will only last a couple min.

Don't bother overheating heavily until you have thermodynamics to level 4. Seemingly huge impact from skill.
Overheating grouped weapons can be iffy. A mod off-lines when the heat damage reaches 100%, if that mod is in a group the entire stack becomes inaccessible (easily fixed by R.Clicking and ungrouping, but still).
When out of grid/cpu with a spare high slot, stick an offline module in the middle of the highs and surrround it with guns. Helps dissipate some of the heat giving more time before it fries.
When fitting, place the mods you are going to overheat in the middle of the racks (repairers for instance). Helps dissipate some of the heat giving more time before it fries.
Train the nano paste skills as well, if in station deficient areas being able to fix the heat damage in space becomes essential.
Beware the Addiction! Once you start overheating you will never stop and repair bills will start stacking up - that extra performance comes at a price

Thermo dynamics 4 is nice, but you can also overheat fine if you dont have it on 4 yet.

Edited by: Dracoknight on 05/03/2009 11:24:23 Well, my Engineering V is done in about 8 hours, and i have Energy management IV and V on my list next.
Personally i wouldnt use the Overheat more as a "Oh Shi-" button, but then again there is discussions out there that tells you to start the Overheat right away.

Well consider the scenario you go against a similar pilot with almost identical skills but lacking overheat you are engaging each other in an identical ship (say a thorax) if you just shoot at each other its a coin toss but if you start with overheating right away you will finish him off quite a lot earlier.
Oh yeah have nanite repair paste in your cargohold then you can repair stuff w/o docking.

I can only confirm it. Heat saved my ass a couple of times in tough fights. However, I usually start it a bit into the fight when I see that it gets tight.
And never let the mod go offline from heat, you will have to dock then to repair it.

One thing im intrigued by is the damaged modules in group mode, when ungrouped the damage varys with the highest being in the middle of the rack, however I was playing on sisi the other day and decided to group my guns, overheated them, killed the guy and warped to station.
Out of interest I ungrouped the guns and found out the damage was uniform, all had 24% damage, now does it take the higets damaged module and make them all the same as that or what? which is best grouped or ungrouped?
grouped is very nice for quick ammo swapping (im a blaster pilot so swapping to null quickly is needed) but if it means my guns die quicker I'll go pack to individually pressing f1-f8

The heat accumulated is the same grouped as ungrouped, so you can heat and ungroup as it nears critical to micro-manage the remainder. The middle modules will receive more as they are getting, not just their own but residual heat from neighbouring mods - heat bleeds across the entire rack.
The observation that they were all evenly damaged does not correspond yo how I have have experienced it on TQ. Perhaps grouped guns are getting a helping hand in patch.

Ok so i just did some testing on sisi, 1 mega 7 neutrons, 1 small nos offlined for heat in the 4th slot. warped to a belt, 1st time guns ungrouped, pre-overheated pre-pressed f1-f7 so ready to fire , targeted a roid, blasted away for 20 seconds then stopped. the highest damage i got was 12% with the lowest being 1% on the gun in the 8th slot%. Repeated the same with grouped, at the end i had uniform damage to guns all 22%. double that of the ungrouped. so i for one am going back to ungrouped

it is the best game mechanic out there, right when you didnt think you had anything that could help you get away/break the tank, you can overload the rack and viola, that extra dps/speed/tank is there for your rescue(it doesnt go quite like that but you know what i mean). just remmember that it makes nasty ships even nastier best sig ever:)
