trailer impresses.
one can only hope it tops st2, the rest, frankly, was rubbish. If there is epic to be had with all the shiny, it might just stand a chance :)
they did make some promising choices in the cast though... some.

It is pretty and we could certainly use a good space scifi movie at this point. I want so badly this to actually be a good movie, so there might be another trek TV series coming soonish, but I'm still a bit pessimistic. All modern movies look amazing and so do the trailers. SW:prequels were pretty too with loads of action, but the movies aren't worth watching a second time. Prove me wrong mr. J.J. Abrams, please.

Ahem, you mean Next Generation.
Many people still hold to ST2, but First Contact is mine.

the trailer was indeed nice, but now i'm rather curious which race has acces to that kind of technology way back then.
Also, like the "suicide drones" at the end, nice touch.

Nice action scenes. Lets just hope that there is an actual Star Trek story in there somewhere. I know asking for a villain of the same caliber as Khan Noonien Singh is unrealistic, but...someone at least. Someone that is more than just a clichT born in the deepest pits of Hollywood hell? ______________________________________________ -My respect can not be won, only lost. The plot involves romulans from the future time traveling, so you're probably correct in assuming that technology is too advanced for the era the movie is set in.

That explains singularity generator and very advanced ships then. The romulans went for "extra spikey" this time though, looks more like something from Remus. (much like the bladed hull of the Scimitar from Nemesis)

What's that saying? All flash, no substance? This is what I'm picking up from the trailers. The fact he had to apparently re-write and re-film it lends credence to the saying.
I want JJ to prove me wrong, but I think canon is out of the viewscreen and half a sector inside of the Romulan Neutral Zone.

That was (trailer3) probably one of the best movie trailers I've ever seen. Our own EVE vid guys could take lessons from the way that was cut together. (especially after the um.....sorta bleh apoc sneak that's on the preview page.)
I was wary of J.J. Abrams running the show for this, but after this trailer...I'm there. I mean hell, ANYTHING including watching dry sponges on a kitchen counter will be better than Rick "ASS" Berman put together.
This trailer is win. period.

I think this movie looks badass, period.
To people that think this is isn't 'true' star trek and a piece of garbage, that is your opinion. I would like to point out and remind those people how utterly terrible every startrek series has ever been.
I've seen just about all the startrek there is out there (well, only as much Voyager as i could take without vomiting) and it is just terrible. I would say out of all of it, at best 5% was good solid worthwhile entertainment. The rest was just terrible whether due in part to terrible writing, acting or overall plot of a running storyline. And this is coming from a fan of the franchise.
The only saving grace for the franchise has been the movies and the 'diamond in the rough' tv episodes. Every single startrek motion picture has been worth watching and i dont think they will miss the target with this one either.
If some people would rather watch 2 hours of wesley crusher coming of age on a holodeck, kirk fight with a 12foot styrofoam monster, a ferengi sam malone tend bar tt an intergalactic cheers bar on the far side of a wormhole.... etc etc, well that is their right.
I'd rather risk sacrificing a bit of this sacred 'canon' to see people take a new direction with things. SOMETHING NEW. Why trash the movie because it looks action packed? Too exciting? Innate fear of something new? Un-trumpable nostalgia (they remember everything they saw 5-20 years ago as being 10x better than it really was, nothing will ever compare and no one should ever try to).. i just dont know.
I see it just like i see the new Starwars stuff. Some of it i like, some of it i hate, but I'll give it all a chance just to see new artists take the story and remake it over and over is satisfying enough. The few gems that will last as worthwhile are an added bonus.
I think this movie will be much like the last lost in space. Ok (but not great) acting, pretty bad storyline, but cool enough effects and a fast paced action to make it watchable more than once. Will it lack 'content'? I think it's debatable what 'content' means from person to person, but its a friggin scifi movie, not an ayn rand novel. ---------- "This is Chopper Dave's made for TV movie, Blades Of Vengeance. See, he's a chopper pilot by day, but by night he fights crime as a werewolf... YEAH!" |

Yet another franchise being butchered by using the "actors must be 19 and ubercool" and the "l337ness over character depth cause that would take too much effort (from the viewers)" approach.

Edited by: Dantes Revenge on 07/03/2009 17:37:47 I still prefer Kirk to the pansy captains like Picard who used diplomacy far too much. Kirks idea of diplomacy was if the guy is still standing after being shot several times with a hand phaser, he wins but only until the ships phasers can be brought online. His other tactic was man with biggest gun wins and Kirk always made sure his gun was bigger.
Another reason for watching the early series was to see how many times in one episode you could see the strings that held the model Enterprise in place in the space scenes.
STNG took all the fun out of the series and turned it onto something you'd expect from a ship full of politicians. I want to hear a second generation Chekov shouting "Got him!" during action packed episodes of slaughter and mayhem. If I wanted diplomacy and bull****, I would visit the House of Commons.
I don't mind admitting I'm a bit of a trekkie and I'd watch this movie... well, just because, but I'd feel really let down if it wasn't action all the way. Chances are it will be a load of slow moving stuff with a 5 minute battle at the end. If you just want to see the battle, watch the trailer, it's probably the whole battle scene broken up and mixed about. Unfortunately, this is what I've come to expect from most "action" films now.

Face it, they make movies to make MONEY, normal people are not going to see a trekkie's idea of a star trek film, why?, just look at the tv series- its terrible!. Normal people will go and see this movie.

Understand the time period is when they're all in the academy, so yes there will be some young people. Besides, nobody wants to watch a Star Trek with a 40 year old virgin Trekkie in command of the Enterprise.
