Actually there was a Dragon before....... but it died because it couldn't breath in outer space

Well the PvE goal of DAOC was bigger and badder MOBs true. However similar to Eve the end game is PvP.
To me Eve is very similar. You start out doing PvE, and create a base of money making facilities. ie you have a skills, equipment, agents etc... that can make you money pretty fast for when you lose your gear in combat.
However, and this is debatable. Comabt PvP in eve either does better or worse because of the time required to get new gear. Some people love the fact that losing a ship stings a bit others hate it.
I think at this point it strikes a decent balance, although there are still fringe players on both sides that think it's too one way or the other.
Eve will likely never have events that require hundreds of people because someone will go on a griefing spree, chaos will ensue and next thing you know a 100 pods are floating around and everyone is going 'wtf?'
So for better or for worse eve took a different model. Because of bad lag I would say that initially that was a good thought. However as it becomes more stable eve will have problems being able to include everyone in events they will always be a fraction of the player base.

One thing I really like about Eve is the fact that, unlike games such as DAOC and Lineage 2, in-game currency actually has many outlets with which to leave the game. The devs are able to control inflation, and although we HAVE seen continuous inflation, it is NOTHING to the degree of inflation seen in these other games.
In Eve there is a fully programmed, well thought-out market system which adds a dynamic that few other games can rival. Normally in a game with an economic model as advanced as here, the action side is vastly diminished . . . but not in Eve! Though sometimes you have to wait a good while before action takes place, nothing has set my heart pumping and adrenaline flowing like the heat of battle in this game . . .

Do not try and kill the dragon. That's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth.
What truth?
There is no dragon...

Originally by: Ca0 Ca0 Okay so I was thinking today . . . about Eve Online and how it is SO different from any other game I've played. In most games, even in most MMORPGs, there is an ultimate "goal" to be achieved. For example, in Dark Age of Camelot (the game I played for a couple years before coming to Eve), there were dungeons at every stage of the game, and each dungeon generally had a Boss that you had to kill. Eventually, you got to the Badder dungeons where even at the highest levels, you needed a group to kill the Boss. And the epic quests and events - slaying the dragons for example - you needed multiple groups, even hundreds, of people to accomplish the task.
In that game, there was always a dragon to slay, a purpose to strive for. In Eve, there isn't. But is that really such a bad thing?
I was thinking about that the other day - why the game goes on, and why people play. And that's when I realized that Eve is special in that way. You don't NEED any dragons in Eve - the game is designed in a such a way that the content is driven entirely by the players. Players organizing themselves and striving to achieve whatever goals they set for themselves, fill whatever role they choose, is what this game is all about. It reminds me of an old old game I used to play (single player) called Dark Lands.
So when you wonder and ask, "What is the point here? How do I slay the Dragon in Eve Online?" just remember that the dragon is whatever your imagination makes it out to be! Be you a mercenary, pirate, industrialist, or merchant, you won't ever see a "point" to playing Eve Online unless you create it yourself!
And that IS the point of Eve Online, and what makes it so awesome!
